Quick Start Chip Carving part 1

Excellent introduction! I'm a woodworker interested in embellishing my boxes with chip carving. This is one of the best intro videos I have seen. I love the idea of using high density polyurethane as a substrate. Allows you to focus on technique with having to deal with grain. Awesome idea!

Looks complicated sharpening. It's going to take a lot of practice to get the muscle memory down but very worth it. The video is great and to the point. No pun intended. Which wood are you using exactly? The cuts look extremely smooth. I always have the problem with lime wood that it is too fibrous. Maybe I've bought the wrong wood so far, as there are certainly differences between the same types of wood.

Can someone with shorter, stubby thumbs (shorter than average) still chip carve or would it be too difficult to form a proper angle for the knife?
