The best surf guide to SC I have seen so far!!! Please keep the content coming my friend, I'm an amateur surfer from Monterey and this helped me find out where I want to go for my next session!
The memorial at the Lane consists of friends and family that surfed there, ultimately passing away. They almost all died out of the water. A ton of people think all those people died surfing the Lane. To clarify, no. Enjoyed the video. Too bad you didn't start at Natural Bridges. Stockton Ave is one of our favorite breaks also. Take Care, JC
I learned to surf at 38th & The Hook late 70's. On many a great surf day Jack O'Neal would be surfing the hook and sometimes we shared a wave. Jack O'Neal was a really a cool man and shared his surfing knowledge. There's always going to be a wannabe kahuna either the Hook or 38th, but they are easily ignored.
Thanks for the comment. I goofed on a few facts like I went from west coast to east coast, I misnamed a beach...lol. but the surf stuff is good. Thanks for the comment. Let me know if you have any questions.
He was so kind and friendly; he had zero ego. I do the Jay race when I can in honor of him. He was one of a kind. It didn't matter if you were an out of towner or local; he treated everyone the same. Just a rad guy I always looked up too.
@@ChooseAdventureCaliforniaStyle I love Santa Cruz too. Am new to the sport but haven't met any aggros yet and generally people are friendly.. especially around the harbor.
Choose Adventure California Style, great vid and awesome presentation, however, the music was a bit loud for me, and with your laid back voice, was hard to hear what u were saying. I was born and raised in Palo Alto, and we used to go over to San Gregorio beach all the time. Sadly, I never got to surf, but I made up for that when I moved to Hawaii. Thanks again for the great video. PS, I know what u mean about grumpy locals. I've had a few run-ins with some local Maui boys. I was always outnumbered, so I usually just tried to fade back into the scenery. Hahaha. :)
Too bad that Cowells is a lake most of the time right now. Wish there would be bug swells this winter to bring the sand back in. It’s honestly the best beginner spot with good sand coverage.
Great overview. Thanks. Considering a mid to late October trip, either to SC or down south to Malibu and San Clemente. I’m probably a low intermediate longboarder. How would SC be that time of year for someone like me in terms of consistency and number of options? Would love your thoughts. Thanks again! Johnny
Hey Johnny! Thank you. That's a great time of year to surf. I personally like SC the best. Down south is super fun and I go a few times a year. My favorite spots down south is Doheny, swamis, and of course surf rider Beach (malibu). SC has the most amount of surfing options in such a small area, that is consistently good. The options are vast. From Cowells; one of the best places to learn how to surf to Steamer Lane and everything in between. Going early is your best bet, later in the day it can get busy. My favorite spots in SC and would be great for you is 38ths or now called Jack's (located in front of the green house which was Jack's). Capitola, privates... either way, SC or down south you'll have a blast! Hope you have a great trip!
Privates is located along East Cliff Dr road. This is leaving the Hook and heading towards Capitola. There is a gate with a few parking spots. You used to have to buy a key however now the gate Is supposed to be always unlocked; as all beaches should be public.
I'd check out the website/app surfline. I do not live near the ocean but I go there often. I can say this though...wherever there is waves, even small, it's better than a swimming pool and better than nothing at all. Good luck!
Santa Cruz and most anywhere on the California coast are no Drone zones. You can download free maps showing where you can and cannot fly. If your looking to get your Part 107 check out my channel; I did a video on how to get it.
Friendly. The only spots that can get territorial is steamer lane, outside pleasure point, and the hook. All other spots are very friendly and welcoming.
@@BCBlue guess bad timing. Worst one was, I was hanging heels across a clean up set. After I had a group of guys splashing water at me yelling at me to leave.
Choose Adventure California Style Sorry about that. Nobody deserves to be mistreated in the water. Some surfers are real dicks. I almost went to blows with some prick at Big Dune in L.A. once. Enjoy your next trip to Santa Cruz.
@@ChooseAdventureCaliforniaStyle 1st peak at the hook is never welcoming to a unfamiliar face paddling out with a lot of board under them. ive seen them shoed down to seconds and sharks a lot.
Take a look at the crowd in this video at Jacks and 1st peak. It's flat with 50 people out. The local shortboarders at The Hook are making a "last stand" at this one break. Localism sucks but I understand the desperation mentality.
Thanks for the comment! I was in the area recently wanting to do a surf video with me surfing with my gopro. The wildfire smoke made it so dark you wouldn't have seen anything on camera. Once the smoke clears im doing a surfing video. So stay tuned!
