With all you've taught us last year, I'm discovering there is so much more still to learn yet! That's a good resolution for 2020...to keep watching Dianne Mize and keep learning! Thanks ever so much and Happy New Year!
I just found your channel today looking for info about oil painting backgrounds - wow, what a wealth of information you’ve given viewers on your channel. I’m happy to have found you and you’re an excellent teacher!
Not all color wheels show red as darkest. Because of the variations printed processes, color wheels will vary in value and will not always show the inherent value of a color.
Happy New Year! This explanation of the anatomy of light and shadow is excellent. The fact you look at it as anatomy helps. Question for you....can you explain how to make shadows so that they “relate” to each other in a painting? Does this mean colors too? Such a wonderful way to start 2020!
Candace, shadows in a painting will be determined by the light source, whether a direct light or a diffused light. Shadow deprives color of its hue's saturation--in other words, the degree of saturation we see if any hue depends upon how much light and the kind of light it is receiving. If I understand you question correctly, the best way to relate shadows to each other is to determine their temperature. If the light is cool (as on an overcast day), shadows generally are warmer than areas not in shadow; if the light is warm, shadows generally tend to be cooler.
I think the "terminology" of shadows is confusing. It doesn't conform to standard meanings and has to be learned/memorized, when our eyes show us what your saying. Maybe a number system......
Various kinds of shadows serve a function. When we understand their function, it is easier to call that function by its name. When we learn to see what the shadows are doing, it doesn't hurt to be able to identify them. For example, what does an occlusion shadow do? What does a cast shadow do?
So well explained...a lot to learn from you Dianne......you do take our endeavors in art to another level.....thanks so much Dianne. My art is incomplete without your knowledge which you share so generously. Best art teacher in the world!
Great demonstration Diane..."Happy New Year". I keep noticing the particular brush you use & wondering if you might share its make since it looks so easy to handle?
