A small technical question for a wonderful technical lesson: what is the advantage of holding the brush overhand? (I also enjoyed learning how to brace your hand with the finger of the other for easier control.) In appreciation..
@IntheStudioArtInstruction
@IntheStudioArtInstruction 3 года назад
Chaya, when holding the brush over hand, we have more freedom to maneuver it from the wrist and shoulder. That can give us a more spontaneous brush stroke.

Excellent tutorial, thanks Dianne. Those greys at the distance are very difficult to read from nature and thus to achieve. They either go brownish or to a violet-purplish tone.
@IntheStudioArtInstruction
@IntheStudioArtInstruction 3 года назад
Try thinking of each neutralized color you see as a chord of three notes--1 (hue) 2 (value) 3 (intensity) -- rather than as brownish or other generic labels. Identify the value range first, then identify the hue, then identify the intensity by its degree of neutralized-to-saturated hue, and you will find that you can easily identify any color you see.

Very nice info regarding value contrast, one thing i want to ask about the term Chalky looks or Chalky painting , please describe when you feel free. Thanks. 💗 from Pakistan.
@IntheStudioArtInstruction

That term "chalky" is one that painters often use when white has been overmixed in a color area and appears muddy.

I appreciate your style of teaching. I have taken a workshop where they basically have you paint a copy of the artists painting. It was very frustrating. I much prefer learning how to observe the characteristics in order to create the illusion of three dimensionality in a painting. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
