Thank you for this!!! i had missed the art class where my teacher explained palette knife painting and i couldn't find a proper beginner tutorial for it, totally gonna try it this month :)
Thank you Dianne for so openly sharing your expertise. I am new to painting and palette knifes seem to be my choice of technique. Your video is wonderfully clear and easy to understand. Also I am 63 years old and thinking that I am too old to start painting, but your skills and age give me great hope. Things do get better with age. Thank you.
@@IntheStudioArtInstruction Thank you for your kind words. I am encouraged now to believe that the best years are still ahead and that my creative dream of painting is still possible. Beauty, Art and blessings to you. Ronan
Какая же она умничка! До чего же приятно учиться у представителей старой школы интеллигентных педагогов. Спасибо большое за ваш труд, крепкого вам здоровья и долгих лет жизни!
BIOLOGY 2 months ago What a smart girl she is! How nice it is to learn from representatives of the old school of intelligent teachers. Thank you very much for your work, good health and long life to you!
Your instructions are the clearest and most helpful of any I've seen - especially for me as a complete novice. It is a joy to watch you and I'll be investing in your lessons. Do you have workshops?
Elaine, I don't do in-person workshops, but I do live stream workshops about once a month. Check the website - diannemize.com - to see how that works. The next one will be coming up in early May and will be on value relationships.
I just learned to ...with oil paint to just swipe it and see ifvthe colorsvemolliate for tone and hue ....is that what they mean by value...of oils and color .......old old time oils ...what are pigments made from... ...
Patricia, I'm not quite sure I understand your question, but value means the degree of lightness and darkness, regardless of whether it is oils, acrylics, watercolor, etc.
I loved this tutorial. Your descriptions and analogies were so helpful! I am a newish painter in acrylics, but I have always been such a perfectionist when using brushes, and it leaves me disappointed. I decided to learn palette knife, since it is not meant to be precise - to teach myself to accept being more impressionistic and less focused on precision. My question is twofold: Are you using Oils or Acrylics? I am finding many of the acrylics I own are far too watery for the buildup I see most knife workers using (cheap bargain paints). I have one brand that has great thickness, but not many colors in it. Is there a way to thicken thinner paints so that they work better with the knife, or just buy better paint? LOL Sorry for the long post. Will subscribe and start working through all your vids. Be well and stay safe!
In most of these Quick Tips, I'm using oils. I'm not an acrylic painter although I did use it in my college classes back in the 60's. There are acrylic mediums that add body to the paint, but I doubt seriously that you can stiffen a watery acrylic paint without weakening the color.
In the Studio Art Instruction Thanks so much! I still found the tutorial fascinating and highly approachable. I will definitely be trying some of the techniques, even with my acrylics, and practicing every day. I have drawn on water color tutorials for form as well as hue and value ideas for individual pieces, as well. 💛
Bless you Dianne. I’ve recently challenged myself to have a go with palette knife without ant previous knowledge or understanding but now, I’m set to take it on. Thank you so much.
This Tip is from 2015 when we first began these tips. We've been publishing one per week every since then, so you will notice in later tips, the closeups are there.
Thank you teacher Dianne! I want to experiment with pallete knives, but I didn't even know the basics on how to choose and buy them. Thank you for this great short introduction lesson. Very didactic and comprehensive! I'll surely follow your youtube channel. Love from Brazil!
I do online workshops every month. I no longer do in person teaching, only online and videos. You can sign up for my communications and always get a notice when workshop registrations begin. Just go to diannemizeacademy.com/sign-up-for-diannes-communications/
What is the difference between art store palette knives and the metal ones that are cheap on ebay from China that I already have? .. ( I know better ones are rust proof and may fall apart faster, but I just want to know if they pretty much work the same for applying paint)
Well, Lisa, any kind of palette knife might be available on Ebay. When buying one, look for the knife to be metal, not plastic, and for it to have good flexibility.
Love your instruction, but I will once again ask-no-BEG- your camera operator to stop pulling away to wide-angle shots when you’re demonstrating a technique, e.g., picking up paint on the palette knife. S/he continually does this, and it’s very difficult to see what, exactly, you are doing. Pleeeeease?
Thank you ma'am you have made it so much easier than others to understand. However I thin it would be better if we can see the art clearer and you zoom on it a bit more
I appreciate your being irritated by this, but our Quick Tips are based on viewer's questions. These are not designed to be done in sequence, but for each Tip to stand alone.
how do i take a picture that is square and draw it over onto a recangular canvas . in other words the picture now has to stretch a bit to make up for the extra space on the sides ? i know there is a grid method to do this. my cousin used to do it .but she died recently and i cant ask her
Nothing worse than a so called "artist" who doesn't know the difference between a palate and a palette THEY ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE! THEY ARE PRONOUNCED DIFFERENTLY!
I had an expensive Sennelier one that I thought i lost so got a cheaper one which ended up gouging lumps out of my wood palette in my box easel which the Sennelier one didn't. But I found my more expensive one again (any time I went to our art shop around here they were always sold out of that particular shape). Buy cheap buy twice!
