In this video we are taking a quick look at how to drill out a snap (press stud) if you happen to set one badly and need to replace it. The same technique can be used for similar things such as rivets if required.

Some things pay for themselves. I'm looking to get a hand press because doing these by hand tool can be difficult and I hate having to drill them out. Excellent advice, hope your health is improving.

Thank you for your tips. Knowing what to do when things go wrong (as they inevitably will) is just as imporatnt as knowing how to do things right.

Thanks for the great lessons Ian, really appreciate all your videos. It's nice to see videos from across the pond and from fellow leather crafters with similar impairments as my own. Thanks again.

Hi Ian, really useful video thank you. Regarding rivets specifically, I've found to stop a rivet (inevitably) spinning after centre punching and halfway through drilling - it's best to re-set the rivet with a setting tool. Clamping pressure is re-applied and stops the spin. You may have to hit it relatively hard and repeat a couple of times, but I've found it much kinder to the leather than involving pliers. If the setting tool is in danger of marking the leather you can devise alternatives that will squash the rivet back down, e.g.using a ball peen etc. Hope that's helpful. Thanks

Forgot to ask, on your Tandy press, which dies would you suggest to must have, cause I've also seen other presses online that sell similar presses. Thanks.

I bought Barry King's #20 setter. Never an issue. Little effort is required to set the snaps. Best investment I have ever made.

Thanks for the tip. The press stud setting hand machine I have seen what looks similar and is advertised as such on the Chinese versions of eBay for as little as US$29. As we both know it could be a complete piece of junk or half the physical size and contain lies in the description. I was wondering if you had any feedback on any Chinese versions? Keep safe, Ian.

I have never used a Chinese one no, I've owned the Tandy one for years so it's all I've ever used. The Tandy ones cost lest than they used to since they re-jigged their pricing though the die sets are expensive so it still adds up to a lot. If the Chinese ones work OK then that's fine but if they bugger up half the things you're trying to set then it's false economy. I like the peace of mind of knowing hardware is properly set, my own press has paid for itself in that regard many times over I suppose.

What parts are needed in order to use a press to set snaps? It seems like one should be able to get just the top and bottom parts no?
@Leodis.Leather
@Leodis.Leather 4 года назад
you need a press and a die set for the specific hardware you're setting, so for snaps you end up with 4 die pieces (2 for the base and 2 for the cap)

@@Leodis.Leather ah there we go, a die set. I couldn't recall what the parts were called. Thank you!
