Quick Tip: What's the Right Muzzle Device for Your Gun?

Muzzle brake? Flash hider? Compensator? Firearm muzzle devices come in a bewildering array of shapes and sizes designed to perform specific functions. Brownells Gun Techs Steve Ostrem and Caleb Savant are here to help you figure out which muzzle device is right for you and your gun. FLASH HIDERS (aka "flash suppressors") do exactly what their name suggests: they mitigate the fireball emitting from the muzzle when you fire a shot. Originally developed for the military, they help reduce the risk of your muzzle flash telling the enemy where you are. COMPENSATORS direct combustion gas upward to counteract the natural tendency of the muzzle to rise when a shot is fired. Due to its closed bottom, a compensator also kicks up less dust when you're on the ground shooting prone.
MUZZLE BRAKES reduce felt recoil by redirecting the gas outward, to the sides. The faster the bullet velocity, the better a muzzle brake works. For AR-15 shooters, Caleb answers this old question: Does it make sense to put a muzzle brake on a rifle chambered in .223 / 5.56? Because it reduces or at least slows the amount of gas coming out of the muzzle, a SOUND SUPPRESSOR also serves as an effective muzzle brake. Finally, some muzzle devices are designed to perform two - or even all three of these functions - but the results tend to illustrate the old saw, "Jack of all trades, master of none."

I put a muzzle brake on a 5.56 bull barrel prs build and there is absolutely no felt recoil. While recoil in a .223/5.56 AR style rifle is light to begin with, it is still there. The beauty of this build is since there is no noticeable recoil, the following shot on the same target is stacked, if not in the same spot.

@@christophergrillo410 I don't buy it. The harmonic ringing on an open tine flash hider/comp has nowhere near the intensity of a gunshot. If you're worried about your muzzle device ringing in combat, you have seriously and fatally misplaced your priorities. This argument is akin to the M1 Garand ping myth. If the enemy is close enough to hear the ringing they already know where you are, and if you are in a situation where being annoyed at the ringing even matters, you're most likely firing fast enough that you never notice the ring anyway. Plus, modern military equipment includes hearing protection that would entirely deaden that sound to you because it is so faint to begin with. I know they switched from a 3-prong to the birdcage flash hider with the M16A1, but they did it entirely because the 3-prong flash hiders were prone to snagging and breaking in the Vietnamese jungle, not any silly made up problem people come up with like "it rings too loud and is distracting".

@@christophergrillo410 Trust me, when you are shooting your WarComp Open Tine equipped rifle at someone, they are NOT going to hear that little "TING!" noise that the muzzle device produces. You can hear it because your earplugs/muffs are reducing the sound of the muzzle blast, but the deer or whatever won't hear anything but the muzzle blast from firing. The target also won't see much in the way of flash, even in total darkness. Nothing works better for reducing flash than the open-tine WarComp muzzle device (7.62 or 5.56).

What's the easiest way to find someone shooting at you or shooting anywhere near your general direction... Sound which can bounce off virtually everything? Or a flash of light from muzzle blast? I wouldn't disagree with it being more for the user, but for different reasons like not having a fireball telling the enemy exactly where you are. And yes it's a military thing.

My favorite now is the Smith Enterprises Vortex. It has the greatest flash suppression and is used by SOCOM operators on their rifles. Next best for flash suppression and close on its heels is the lowly A2 and lowly A1. The downside of the Vortex is its exposed tines to which the military added a ring on the M16A1 to prevent snagging on gear and foliage. I don't worry about that. In addition, the Vortex screws on by hand, without a crush washer, and is firmly hand tightened. It's self-tightening with its spiral tines. Removing one after the barrel has had 500 - 1000 rounds through it requires a wrench and an action rod. That's how much it gets tightened onto the barrel with use.

My brother wanted a muzzle brake on his lightweight 30-06 about 15 years ago cause it punished you at the bench and the rifle grouped about 2 and 1/2 inches at 100 yards. So, we asked a local gunsmith if he could port the barrel. When we picked it up and seen that he ported the barrel ( not put a muzzle brake on it ) my brother was upset! However... once we shot it the recoil was a non factor and it shot 3/4 inch groups all day we were extremely happy! I'd go with porting most barrels unless you desire a brake that can be removed.

@@blackie1of4 That is true The cost of getting a barrel threaded is usually pretty similar to getting it ported. My point was that while your point stands for the same effect of reducing anticipation you could get the same thing from a removable muzzle blast compensator. there are some states that don't allow compensators and others that don't allow flash hiders. Some states don't allow threading. so depending on which state you're in one of the other option maybe the best you can get.

I have about 15 years interdicting drug haulers on the Mexican border this is my $.02. Go with flash hiders over muzzle breaks because when it’s time to use a rifle for real at night muzzle rise means nothing compared to not having an, “I’m here” beacon. Your ears and eyes will also be in a lot better shape during and after action with a flash hider. Prong type flash hiders like the Vortex work great but have a habit of catching on foliage and other stuff. I like the Phantom and A2 with the closed bottom. Have a nice day.

You might want to revisit the laws of physics on this one. Primary recoil is the gun's "reaction" to the bullet's "action". Accelerating a mass (bullet) is exactly what causes the gun to move backwards. The heavier the bullet and the more rapid the acceleration, the greater is the felt recoil. When the bullet leaves the end of the barrel the gasses are released, creating a pressure differential between the front and rear of the barrel, adding to the rearward motion of the gun.(secondary recoil). To reduce the sudden rearward thrust caused by the pressure differential, one need only to slow down the rate at which the pressure in the barrel drops. This can be achieved by simply drilling a series of holes in the last inch or two of the barrel. In semi-auto action firearms, secondary recoil is reduced by the opening of the bolt about the time the bullet leaves the barrel, thereby dropping the pressure at the rear of the barrel and front at nearly the same time.

As a physicist, I see most people misunderstanding impulse induced forces. This is evident by the discussion of muzzle “energy” as the way to view the effects of recoil and bullet penetration. Energy is a poor tool to use to view these effects since considerable energy is expended in sound and heat, two energy loss mechanisms that are difficult to calculate. The proper tool for collision analysis is the principle of conservation of momentum, as it is independent of heat and acoustic energy losses. It also properly explains the effect of a heavier rifle in reducing the felt effect of recoil and properly describes the effect of a muzzle brake (energy calculations do not). So, m1v1 +m2v2 = Constant, and to determine recoil force, d(mv)/dt=Recoil force. Where m = mass of bullet + mass of powder, t = bullet transit time inside barrel, v = muzzle velocity. The gun’s recoil velocity V (capitalized to distinguish it from v, bullet muzzle velocity) is then simply V = (Recoil force x dt)/M, where M is the mass of the rifle. Anyway, I wish people would stop talking about recoil in terms of energy transfer. It is momentum transfer.

@hookeaires6637

“Energy” is the word used generically for this on this topic. It’s an accepted commonly used word being used incorrectly in this case. A bit like the misuse of the word “clip” when it’s really a magazine being discussed. The simple fact that either device is where the cartridges are loaded for the handgun or rifle is a moot point for many people, but it doesn’t imply that they don’t understand the basic function of that device. You’re certainly correct in your explanation of momentum transfer, and seemingly offended by the misuse of a word. I’m that guy that you correct and because I do fundamentally understand the physics of “recoil” (most people do regardless of “high school physics” if they’re into firearms) roll my eyes and say “whatever”.

@dilvishpa5776 2 года назад
@@hookeaires6637 I would agree with you except that this video is supposed to be a tutorial. A tutorial is supposed to advance understanding. Referring to momentum as energy does not do so. Edit: I interpret what you are saying as “In the gun community, we are generally ignorant of what happens when a gun is fired, but we are comfortably happy in our ignorance, so leave us alone. How dare you suggest use of a tool that might enhance our understanding, when we are perfectly happy with one that misleads us”. I also seriously doubt you have a good understanding of what happens. After seeing this I would prefer a flash hider. When you're engaging a tarhet at night it is a necessity to be able to keep your night vision. If you're blinded just for a split second, it could mean life or death. And by hiding the flash as much as possible, it will help keep your target from seeing where you are. You already have your adrenaline flowing and you're on edges. Because the target you are pursuing will kill you if they get the upper hand. I know this because for 31 years I had to engage in such situations. So, I choose the flash hider until I can get a silencer.

Especially the ones that have non symmetrical ports. And even though we're talking about the gas behind the bullet, it must still "feel" all those vanes and gaps as it pushes aside the air in front of it.
@CalebSavant

Yes, and this is actually a documented issue when running a brake that is too close to the bullet diameter. That is why most companies go .020" over bullet diameter, the gas venting rear of the bullet will not bounce and push on the actual bullet causing turbulence because it has enough space around the bullet to vent.

I have found some supersonic 9MM, would it work well with a muzzle brake? I am new to some of this, having been a truck driver for 40 years. No weapons allowed in a big truck, especially since I ran California for most of that.

There is any difference in bullet velocity at the muzzle with the use of a muzzle brake?

What about something like the Strike Industries Oppressor or the Indian Creek BFD or the SureFire Warden Blast Regulator. It would be nice if you did a quickie video on these types of units. May the 2nd Amendment be with US. 🐢🇺🇸🐢🇺🇸🐢🇺🇸

I know this may sound like a dumb question, but does the A2 flash hiders by chance increase the sound of the blast like a brake does ?

How do these devises affect acuracy, if at all? Some more than others?
@project86xero
@project86xero 4 года назад
They will affect your point of impact but, if properly installed, they have very little effect on accuracy. However that "properly installed" bit is very important. If a muzzle device is too loose it can move in which case your point of impact moves with it. Conversely if it's too tight you can put unwanted pressure on your threads causing them to lengthen or even push the device up against the crown of your barrel causing it to scrunch in. Both of which will cause your groups to open up dramatically. Now sometimes if you back off the muzzle device and retorque it properly you can undo that damage. But sometimes it's permanent. Long story short use torque wrench to install your muzzle device if possible. Especially if you're not using a crush washer. This is extremely important when mounting a muzzle device that doubles as a suppressor mounting system.

Some actually improve your accuracy, especially on follow-up shots, because they control recoil. The Miculek device for 223 or 308 removes essentially all felt recoil and rise on my 223.
@jonathanrogers9961

From what I have seen weight on the end if the barrel generally tends to improve accuracy. The gasses come out behind the bullet, so the bullet just glides through

Inside home defense, brake, comp, or flash hider ?
@pgeorg01
@pgeorg01 4 года назад
Definitely a flash hider. Touching off a round inside is going to have your head spinning as it is. Putting a muzzle brake will make things much worse. A compensator will not be as bad as the brake but still bad. The flash hider will not make it perceptibly louder but it will cut the flash down substantially and if it is dark your eyes will thank you. However this is a "lesser of evils" situation. None of the above will be a good time for anyone involved.
@jonathanrogers9961

Kaw valley linear comp. It helps push the blast forward away from you. its VERY, loud shoting indoors and pushing the sound away is good

What should I go with for my T91? I think the original flash/comp combo had small ports before a birdcage ar flashhider, meanwhile the one that came with the wolf upper had just the traditional a2 upper. From what little I shot with it, it doesn't kickmuch with, my only comparison being a milspec M4 and M16A2 both shot with at only one session. Does operating system even play a role, because the t91 isn't direct gas, it's short stroke.

This is a good video but dude on the right must have a whole can of Crisco on his head. You could probably take one of those sand castle buckets and mold it on his head and then sculpt Gandalf and Pippin into it and shoot the LOTR scene from the battle of Minas Tirith.

Flash hiders also help keep the shooter from being blinded by his own muzzle flash in low light conditions, and to help keep the shooter's natural night vision that the eyes adjust to.
