Hi there,
my current project is far more time consuming than expected this is why it was time for a new Quick Tips video instead of a project.
This time I'm looking at the differences between Aluminum Oxide and Ceramic grinding belts.
The grinder and belts can be purchased from Multitoolproducts.com
Aluminum Oxide Belts: bit.ly/2tKpXcs
Ceramic Belts: bit.ly/2NiqQ4q
Belt Grinder Attachment: bit.ly/2Nh56ph

Good to see someone using a respirator while doing this.

Thanks for being the ONLY person I've found that has mounted their Multi Tool grinder attachment on the left side vertical with the platen facing forward. I have no idea why this isn't more common, but nice to know what it'll look like.

Also, amazing video. I'm actually buying a new belt grinder today off craigslist and was looking for belts to fit it. I definitely think I'll go with ceramic belts! You feeder be many more subscribers and I'm always sure to recommend your channel to my friends. Thanks a lot! Keep up the great work.

Alex 2Q I just got a Craftsman 2x42 belt sander for $20. The sander is no longer manufactured but it ran for about $200-$250. It's also 1/2 hp which is a tad bit more than my HF sander.

Also, in the first comment I meant deserve many more subs

That 2x42 should serve you well! They also make those ceramic belts in 2x42 but I'm not sure where to get them in the US. The market is big enough so it should be easy to find a supplier.

I was thinking about getting them from Trugrit. They sell aluminum oxide and silicon carbide (which are awful belts) and higher quality 3M Trizact, Norton Blaze, and ceramic belts.

Thanks for the insight ive started to learn forging this past couple of years and have always used al/ox belts on my 25x762 grinder and found that they dont last long at all so i have up'd my game and bought a few ceramic and zirconia belts to try and see what the difference is so thanks for this vid

Interesting. I just got my 2x72 and am setting up a workspace for it today. I am taking a short break from the heat. It seems the ceramic generates less heat while taking similar amount of material. It doesn’t look nearly as cool on video though. 🤣
@LetsPrepTogether
@LetsPrepTogether 6 лет назад
Yeah it is difficult to show the difference in stock removal rates. It actually feels like the ceramic actually removes more stock faster whilst generating less heat. I'm thinking about a couple of more standardized ways to show how different belts work. I'm a bit jealous that you got a 2x72 now, but if I'm realistic about it, it would be overkill for my small shop. If you don't have them yet you should look at getting some scotch brite belts as well.
@ManCrafting
@ManCrafting 6 лет назад
Alex 2Q I got a box full of belts including a couple scotchbrite. I am creating a dedicated space for metal working in a storage shed that was storing a few tools, but mostly junk.
@LetsPrepTogether
@LetsPrepTogether 6 лет назад
Good idea! You want to keep that nasty metal dust separate from everything else but now I'm even more jealous because my little shop has to be used for everything :D

Alex 2Q there’s always someone with a bigger shop. I have it pretty good though.

Over time, given the same duty cycles, which belt more durable and will last longer?
@LetsPrepTogether
@LetsPrepTogether 4 года назад
Well it depends on the materials you grind. Ceramic for metals (especially steel) whilst alox is better for wood, laminates and plastics.

Hi, my question is concerning health.. Do you know if one is more harmful to your health? I have heard many bad health issues around aluminum. And B because of the sparks I am assuming the grit is made of aluminum?

Can this method work for grinding wheels?
@Qusin111
@Qusin111 3 года назад
did it remove the same amount? did one cut faster?
@LetsPrepTogether
@LetsPrepTogether 3 года назад
Yeah I came to realize that i should have mentioned that. The ceramic works best on steel and cuts it faster. Alox is good for wood and composites.

Are you happy of the customer service of multi tool products ?
@LetsPrepTogether
@LetsPrepTogether 6 лет назад
Hi, yeah I'm actually very happy with the customer service and prices there! I bought the attachment used from a friend and got some additional consumables from Multitool Products. The service was great and delivery quick, the additional cost for shipping from the UK to Germany was outweigh by the lower prices for belts and abrasives. I hope this helped you!

Alex 2Q thanks a lot ! I’m from 🇫🇷 and here the choice of belts is really bad...so that’s why i’m very interested by john’s products 😉
@LetsPrepTogether
@LetsPrepTogether 6 лет назад
la forge montagnarde yes I've heard about the belts and prices from a friend in France. Here in Germany it is also difficult to find quality belts for a reasonable price. You should definitely give Jon a try you won't be disappointed!

Ceramic is better full stop. You can grind blades and thinner gauge to a point without excessive heat build up.
@LetsPrepTogether
@LetsPrepTogether 3 года назад
For metals you are absolutely right anox works better for wood and composites though.
@trevorfichtner3539
@trevorfichtner3539 Год назад
what is full stop?
@mark4lev
@mark4lev Год назад
@@trevorfichtner3539 well the subject is Alu oxide vs ceramic. So therefore any metal that traditionally would be ground on alu can be used on ceramic. Heat build up on ceramic is negligible. So for drills blades etc it’s good.
