@s l I’ve got the Mk8 Fiesta ST3 and at the time of buying mine, it was great value for money (2018). Now the list price has hiked up by nearly £5k in 2 years and the only thing that has changed is where the sport button is placed. I think that’s partly down to the competitors having such high price points that Ford thinks the car is now worth that much.
Go in to any ordinary UK garage an ask the mechanic for a reliable car and he'll say anything Japanese!!!!!! A friend of mine bought a 2015 520D tourer twin power with 75000miles on it a year ago. He went in just before Christmas with 83000on the clock, for a EGR Valve recall, a service, 3 tyres, 2 rear suspension airbags, some driveshaft/rear hub work and after a£1000 discount it came to £6000. Then just a week ago the turbo went so it will be another £3-4000 bill from bmw. If this is an advert not to buy a beamer then nothing is!!!!!! I've owned Honda's for a while now and its about £220 odd for a service every year and thats about it with exception a few tyres and brake pads etc
I like Chris Harris too but you guys need to chill...... under every video there are hundreds of comments saying that you would basically suck him off...... and that everyone else stinks....
I can't be the only one who likes how the Honda looks... One of the few manufacturers who went to town with their styling and desgined something outside the eco-box aesthetic
I'd get the Hyundai. The Yaris is probably more fun but as a daily you want more than just fun. Yaris is a fine weekend car but as a daily it is rubbish.
@@CyAn-S Yup, the Yaris is for people who would rather have a rally homologation hatch than a roadster like the Miata. The Hyundai is for people who can't have a weekend car OR want to have fun while doing their errands. I'd take the light blue one.
@@CyAn-S only issue with the GR as a daily is tyre roar, but a bit of dynamat and some foam on the arch areas of the interior below the carpet should solve that without adding too much weight. The average mpg drops shockingly quick if you give it the beans too many times, but on a run using the adaptive cruise, it really ain’t bad!
Originally Toyota said 25,000 but it was announced a bit ago that if there was the demand they would make more - you now have to wait till 2023 so that answers the demand question Mr Toyota (lm sure that’s not his name 😂)
The point of a hot hatch is that it's a jack of all trades. I don't see me fiting a couple of my +1,90cm friends in it. I think it is an awsome vehicle and a great weekend car, but I wouldn't compare it with the others
@@juanordonezgalban2278 good shout. As much as I desire a GR Yaris, I'd probably now go for the toned down Sportline version of the Type R. The over the top looks and cabin noise have been somewhat remedied so you end up with a comfy spacious practical family car that can handle the supermarket/school run or a track day equally well. A proper hot hatch then...
Or just buy a Mistubishi Evo 6 TME! The way people talk is like Toyota have created something unique, yet all they have just copied what Mitsubishi were doing in the 90"s
the GR-Four Yaris (as it's known here) is what I'm waiting for. why? because there's now a 2 year (possibly longer) waiting list to get one. I took one for a test drive (there's a queue for that too), and it's every bit as good as they say it is. hats off, Toyota.
I doubt many cars are worth waiting over 2 years for. Especially one with a three cylinder engine - there will be be plenty more like it to come. Not knocking the Yaris, I’m sure it’s great, but for that kind of money you could have your pick of quite a few very nice alternatives in the meantime.
@@throwyourbike Yeah like the Golf GTI and Audi S3 to fall asleep in. People want the GR Yaris because it offers something that the GTI and S3 does not - an exciting car to drive..
@@leonk5793 There loads of fantastic cars which are exciting and available to buy right now for less than £30k. Megane RS? Clio RS? Civic Type-R? M3? M4? C63? Mustang? Focus RS? Like I said, I’m sure the Yaris is great but there’s no need to wait 2 years to drive an exciting car.
@STAG162 : Yes, that's why the GR-Four is already a collector before you even sit into it for the first time. There will be only 25 000 units built for the whole world. For some countries you can't even buy one anymore, the allotment has already been sold out. Next year they will come out with the new Yaris GR 2022 for WRC homologation purpose but it will be a hybrid GR as per new WRC rules for 2022 to 2024 seasons.
for me, it's the i30N first, then the Yaris. If you budget is tighter, the Fiesta is awesome as well. Honda is not my Taste, Golf's screens + surroundings suck, S3 is stunning but too expensive and AMG is even reaching into C63 territory with it's price.
Yes let's recommend the car that is, yes is the most fun, but also with drawbacks that make it feel overpriced. Especially if you wan t a true hot hatch, which should also be a good daily imo. Remember we are not talking about track day cars, we are talking about HOT HATCHES, which should be the ideal daily drivers for enthusiasts: - Noisy as heck and poor refinement. A Hot hatch should be both a nice sporty car and a nice comfortable cruiser. - Not important for daily driving but it has the worst exhaust sound (literally sounds just like a stock 3 cyl Polo or Fiesta with 100 hp), even the Golf GTI sounds more exciting. - Poor fit and finish (see Carwow's review of the regular Yaris, just the interior part, it is rubbish). It doesn't even reflect the price tag of the regular Yaris, let alone this one. - Subpar cabin technology. E.G. Infotainment is laughable at this stage (2020-2021) and price point. GR Yaris also removes the digital gauges. I know enthusiasts tend to like analogue things, I guess. But at this price point I expect more than a cabin that looks and "feels" like one from 2005. - Interior design is in my opinion the worst out of all these bu quite some margin, even far behind the Fiesta, which I dislike as well. It is a mess. To me, a hot hatch should look good inside and out. This just doesn't. - Terrible practicality, especially compared to these others, even the Fiesta is almost like an Octavia compared to a Yaris. This "Yaris" is good for a group of people that just want a fast and sporty car..... but NOTHING else. But for that I just think it is way too expensive. Especially where I live, where it starts from 54.195,- euro. Great buy......... for a rich person who can afford a second "weekend" car like this.
Agree, If you have watched Chris Harris talk about his early days in Top Gear after the trio moved on, you realise how much a throw away statement can affect someone. Simple rule, if you wouldn't say to someone if they were in-front of you, don't say it.
I agree - the S3 doesn't even look good so I don't know why he talks about image. In this category of cars it should have been an AMG A35. Even so there were better cars than the A45. I would have included the BMW M135 and Renault Megane RS as well..
Pretty broad competition. Love the GR Yaris and if I was single, would be my choice. But since I'm a married-with-kids immature manchild, Civic Type R thank you very much.
Yaris has quit a few drawbacks, especially at the price. It is a fun side track toy or weekend toy. But it is not a serious daily driver. It is too expensive and not as all-purpose as a hot hatch should be imo.
@@DengMam in the limited edition, yeah, but in the standard Type R too? I hadn't heard that before. My main hesitation is that I have to learn manual first, but that's a US problem I'll overcome when I get there
@@feixas6961 The type R is plain amazing. If you stay on paved roads, doubly so dry ones, you get just as much return from spending resources the way Honda did, by triply going over and honing every detail, as by fitting an awd system. In honestly, the GTI is pretty amazing as well. Just for a slightly more rounded mission. Probably the closest car currently available, to the vaunted 3 series cars from the 90s, now that the Bimmers themselves have gotten too big. And the ST is just plain fun. For all surface, everywhere hooning, the Yaris has it all over the rest, though. It's as light and nimble as the lightest FWDers, while still packing an awd system at least the equal of the much heavier Euros.
What’s the hype ?? Mitsubishi and Subaru nailed this years ago RS and Spec C s . I know what I would rather drive or am I old skool I want to see a Subaru spec c Gr track battle
Amazing video. Everyone asking where Chris but no one saying "We appreciate you Jack." Smh Keep up the good work tho. You are an amazing presenter! Love from SA 🇿🇦.
I would normally choose the Civic TypeR without thinking about it, especially the slightly toned down Sport Line version I like very much. But damn that Merc is nice! And the Yaris GR is also amazing, a 3cyl putting out that performance is simply amazing, 4WD and I like the looks of it.
the Merc is probably the least desirable car on this list. It's for people that are about badges and power only. It's performance is bonkers, but driving dynamics and grin factor is better with the other cars on this list. The Fiesta and the Yaris for me please ;)
Why bringing an a45s into a hot hatch race and racing it against a golf gti, when there is a golf R which is faster than a gti (even tho the R wont have a chance against the amg)
Forget the gti, they brought the fiesta st vs the a45 that is less than the half of the price of the mercedes even there are the focus St and the RS, they’ve been told, just put all the hot hatch cars against it doesn’matter if one is the double of car than another
The only hot hatches under $35k we get in the states are the GTI - $30k, and the Veloster N - $34k. The Type R is $40k + over here. I'm so glad I bought my 2019 Fiesta ST for less than $20k when I did.
A hot hatch with near unusable rear seats? Yeah... that makes sense. The point of a hot hatch, for me, is that it should do everything... from the daily commute to shopping trips to a blast on a B-road. And from that POV, the Golf still looks like the best choice.
@@DefinitelyNotEmma Lmao why would i waste more money on an unreliable endless money pit that's going to be ended up in a junkyard 10 years from now when i could buy a FUTURE CLASSIC, Tommi Makkinen approved, limited edition, rally special homologation hot hatch?
@@Random.Contents. the Toyota won't live 10 years either lol. You can take the best and enjoy it as long as you can, maybe strip it down at the end of its life to a track rocket so it has a couple years extra. Ooooor you take something less exciting that will also break sooner or later, but the time you have it, you never had the best option available. When you die anyway, why don't enjoy life to the fullest extent?
Get the golf people, I threw a (literally bolt on) APR turbo and tune kit on it, and it's ridiculously fast (0-60 in about 3.2 seconds on pump gas. And it handles like a DREAM. I live in Alaska where we often get a foot of snow on the roads, and dirt trails in the summer, and long tarmac stretches and I'm SMOKING anything below a Porsche or modified corvette. You don't have to believe me, but 536HP + 3,300lbs on all 4 tires= 10.23 second quarter miles. I beat an Audi R8 V10+ at the strip, fairly certain it was stock, but I'll take it!
The Type R isn't a hatchback anymore; it's a fastback. Its hatch is so sharply angled that it can't hold any more than sedan. Is everyone just not talking about this?
Toyota is finally rising up from the ashes and giving us this absolute banger of a car! So happy to see the brand go cool-mode again, and not Prius-hybrid-economy-thingy-mode anymore!
@@richarddocherty5007 I've seen this video, thus me asking for times around a track instead. Yaris must be a hoot to drive being so light with awd + 257hp, but I dont see it dethroning the Type-R LE just yet
@Jamie Cole thanks bud...seen this one too. I didn't mention it because it wasn't the LE version of the Type-R. So the normal version was quicker on a small greasy/dampish track, so just imagine the LE version on a bigger dry track. Love me some Sutcliffe vids👌
GR Yaris really is a proper rally-inspired hot hatch. It deserves to be on the top. Plus, it's a Toyota,it won't break either. Only if Chris Harris told that, this video would've been twice as good.
Sorry but disagree. A hot hatch has to do everything. The Yaris may well be a barn stormer down a B road but it should be able to do it with 3 passengers and some overnight bags in the boot. So it isn't a hot hatch. Pains me to say it but it has to be the Golf.
I have a feeling that the Corolla GR for the US market might fit that description when it comes out. The same engine, AWD system, and all the goodies that came with the Yaris, but with 4 doors, serviceable back seats and a large boot. The unspoken good parts about the Yaris GR is that as a racing homologation car with limited production numbers, this thing is set to be an instant classic in the near future for sure. I am not certain anybody would remember the significance of any other cars here, but Yaris GR have the potential to be significant.
@@FalbereChan yes definitely. By brother in law has just ordered one and there's already a 2 year waiting list. I'd love to know now close a Fiesta ST gets to it down a country road. I'd have bought one of those and thrown the Mountune kit at it and had spare cash in my pocket. I reckon it'd give 95% of the thrills with a bit more practically.
Jack: "There's been a tsunami of hot hatches in 2020" Me (living in Canada): "GTI yes, Merc yes, Civic Type R yes, everything else LOL NOPE DO YOU WANT A CROSSOVER INSTEAD??"
Hot hatch Drivers and enthusiasts have never had it soo good. Enjoy any you can afford while you can. Don’t forget RS3, or Mk8 Golf R. Get one and start smiling all day.😀 Yaris is a very special wee car.
Does anyone else hate modern marketing? Never thought I’d see the day where you regularly have to enter a raffle to get the chance to buy a pair of shoes. That same hype is now making its way into the car industry. Exhibit A - The Toyota GR Yaris. Be quick! It’s so good, you better be amongst the first to get one or you’re missing out.
