It's so interesting how I could never listen to a 10-15 minute song from any other band, but when it comes to Tool, the songs are so well made that they lure you in and you cannot escape until its last beat. And if that is not a masterpiece, I don't know what is.

I think "hypnotic" is a pretty good way to describe Fear Inoculum but I personally would describe the album as "Tool at their most MATURE." Tool's more meditative, challenging approach here speaks to a certain minimalism, restraint, and control that only the most seasoned artists/musicians would have. It's partly why Invincible has some of my favorite lyrics of the album. This is also why I feel like some people are having trouble getting into this album, which is totally understandable. It's probably the Tool album that requires the most patience, but I think if you go into it with an open mind, the music will reward the thought and time you put into it. I also had the exact same thought about looking at this record in terms of it "living up to" a 13 year wait. Nothing could. I'm so glad I left that at the door when I dove into the album for my first listen - it allowed me to better appreciate what it had to offer. And if nothing else, 7empest has firmly cemented itself as one of my all-time favorite Tool tracks now. Ultimately, I'm so glad to have a new Tool album that's also just a really good piece of work.

So many bands have returned after long hiatuses this decade. My Bloody Valentine, Swans, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, At the Drive-In, A Tribe Called Quest, At the Gates, Pink Floyd, Sleater-Kinney, American Football…and Tool might be the best of them. Like other than Swans, I don’t think any have reached a level of nearing some of their best work like this. I was worried about this…but it actually lived up to it all. Rock on, Maynard…rock on.

Been a fan of Tool since 1998 and LOVED everything they had done. They are my favorite band ever. It's hard to put into words how much their music has affected me, so I won't bother trying to explain. So Fear Innoculm... I've been enjoying the new album somewhat & listened to it heaps over the last 3 weeks, but despite the obvious technical prowess, crisp production, newness, epic song construction & effort that's obviusly gone into it. I feel like some Tool special sauce mojo has been lost somewhere? And it's not a pleasant feeling for me. I'm a guitarist and I just can't get enough of Adams & Bens earlier playing, think like the meandering bass solo work from 'The Pot' at 3:43 ...over Adams riff. quite simple sounding, but it sounds like it singing to me on some other level & . it builds & then it fits perfectly into the 'weeping shades of indigo' vocal part so well....and then the growling bass work and then into the epic outro. with them all going all out...skull pounding drums to boot. OMG... Older Tool just sounds more cohesive and PERFECT to me, you can hear and feel the soul in it. Even long 'old' Tool songs seemed short and i dont want to end, but I'm finding myself getting bored a bit now with the longer tracks from Fear Innoclum . (all of them) and wanting to skip parts, ie. the intro to the title track. But i never get that with relistens of old long Tool songs, like ie. Rosetta Stone. I wonder with Fear Innoculum, that maybe Maynard doesn't care as much anymore? and that attitude has spread to the rest of the band. It kinda seems that way from his interviews and that maybe he felt obligated to make it. Something seems amiss to me...I can't quite place it. I think maybe he would prefer to just do his small-town village wine thing now & indulge his music leanings through Pusicfier * but mostly it seems like he just wants to be with his family and fuck all the rest of us. Even the recent Perfect Circle album was just 'good', but a bit forgettable. Whereas Mer De Noms was hauntingly, devastating, brutal and so beautiful. I listened to Wings Part 1 & 2, Rosseta Stone, Parabol Parabola, Third Eye, H, Jimmy, the other day & they had my emotions soaring again, Wings had me crying like a big baby, and Parabol/Parabola ...OMG what an amazing duo song. But I'm not getting any of that from the new album? AM i broken? I don't think so...there are hints of those feelings, and as i said, Im enjoying hearing new Tool, but not getting the head thrust down the rabbit hole effect that the earlier albums had on me. It just doesn't move me like ALL their previous music did. I know this will be an unpopular opinion, but I think in 10 years, my take may play out to be commonly accepted. Right, back to listening to old Tool on Spotify! \"/ . ...still my favorite band EVER
@abroZ13
@abroZ13 Год назад
I had the same feelings back when the album came out. It's weird because now, heaving listened to the album countless times,... Sometimes it feels like the greatest thing they have ever put out. And than you listen to old tool and it's the other way around. I love fear innoculum but it's almost like a separate thing. Don't know how to explain it properly.

From what i am reading a lot of lifelong Tool fans are diasapointed in this record. I say this... Growing up listening to Rush i was pissed when Permanent Waves came out after the previous and brilliant Hemispheres album. They had caved (evolved) to the mainstream pressures i said. This may be Tool’s most mainstream record to date. I understand that. Just saying that band members get older ,things around them change,etc. I look back and think the Permanent Waves album is top Three of all of Rush’s albums. If your musical tastes do not evolve at the same rate as the band you love then you end up disapointed every time. Give this record a chance. Keep listening. If it stands the test of time its truly a masterpiece. Peace out Tool brothers and sisters out there. Spiral out!

Here's what I'd say about the 13 year wait: I think this album is right up there with all their others, as masterpieces in their own rights. But for me, it wasn't worth a "13 year wait", because after 2011 or so, I _stopped waiting_ , and I am very happy I did. So no, this album is not "worth" a 13 year wait. What I do think, rather, is this: _Only such a massive delay could have produced an album like this_ . I truly hope they do not go so god damn long again, and I hope this isn't their last. But if it is, then I at least know why it was.

Where it's still really really good, but it's been given insanely high expectations that are just impossible to reach. I absolutely love Fear Inoculum (and also Fallout 4) and it's probably my favorite album of the year so far, but if it has any type of flaw, it's that it wasn't able to live up to the impossible hype.

I'm a long time tool fan and this one is starting to rank up among my favorite releases by them; I find it really funny how the music seems to deliberately make call outs to earlier albums and still feel very fresh and new to the band. Also you got a new subscriber!

I've waited, and bought it day one. Online unfortunately, couldn't get the physical. It is very well put together though, a lot of good tracks. Although to be fair some of the tracks are a bit lacking, and Maynard is way calmed down. It doesn't come off as a negative though, he still has great lines. Fear Inoculum is still stuck in my head since I first heard it. And personally I think Pneuma is great. As well as 7empest and the others.

At 5:46 you mention what makes this album different from previous ones and OMG thank you. For some people that'll be a good thing (l dig it), for some people that'll be a bad thing, and for most people it'll just be an interesting difference that comes from these guys being 13 years older than they were the last go 'round. And yet I hear a LOT of people saying "This just sounds like Tool, they didn't change" and it DRIVES ME NUTS

I love Tool alot, but my favorite album of 2019 is Slipknot's 'We Are Not Your Kind.' Fear Inoculum (the album) is a little boring and honestly sounds like a watered down Lateralus. I love the ambiance and layering of the album
@BenOlsberg1995

Very well worded review. I agree with your overall opinion and in the end I still had a lot of fun with this album. As a bassist myself, and one who loves his effects pedals, I was particularly elated when I heard Justin Chancellor's eclectic use of effects once more. I think my favorite instance of this was his tasteful implementation of delay on a couple of tracks. I'm probably in the minority here when I say this but one thing I didn't care for all that much on this album, was the emphasis on the instrumental interludes. Not that Tool doesn't make good use of those kinds of tracks when creating them, no they most certainly do. But I myself am not really the biggest fan of instrumental rock or instrumental metal music unless it's done solely for the soundtrack of a film or something along those lines. But overall as summer comes to a close for this year, I think it's been a pretty great summer for music. I'm especially ecstatic about Incubus's new song they just came out with earlier this week. I can't wait to hear more from them. And I wholeheartedly second that notion about hoping Tool doesn't take the better part of 2 decades to make yet another album.......though I can't help but feel as though we've jinxed ourselves simply by desiring such a thing.

what are you talking about? I haven't seen anybody at all shitting on the album, and I've been looking because I'm not really big on it at all. Tool used to be innovative and interesting, but I can say with 100% confidence that I could come up with most of these songs myself with a delay pedal. More effects and exact same sound and formula of the last couple records doesn't equal good. It's not amazing. It's not terrible. It's ok

@aneurysm341 5 лет назад
@@KT-cz7rm It's just boring. I read a comment somewhere else that put it perfectly. Tool albums (with the exception of half of 10,000 days) have never *needed* to grow on you. What is wrong with you people??! This album was entirely LACKLUSTER and bland for the most part... its definitely their worst album and I hate saying that being such a huge fan of their work. 😖 I dont understand why so many people are lying to themselves about this.. it wasn't an album that was worth the 13 years it took to wait on. And I understand they weren't *obligated* to do ANYTHING for us but jesus, it just wasn't that good.😐

@@sdeedenzacker the problem I'm feeling with it is that it's just too "old hat" and they decided to keep everything the same and forego any evolution of sound. Which isn't *bad* ... but youd expect SOME form of *growth* in 12-13 years of absence... idk I LIKE this album but it just didnt really scratch the itch I guess. 🤷‍♂️

I don't care what you think Heather. FI is really fucking good. Not as good as the last three(which is pretty hard to top), but this one was fucking close. I think this record honestly needed another year in the oven and patch up the self-titled song & Culling Voices because those two are by the far the weakest even in terms of songwriting IMO. The first halves are great, the second halves seem unnecessary and don't really have a direction. They just had to move on for the sake of moving on. It would have been nice if Tool didn't rehash so many riffs this time around too, they normally do this sort of thing but they did it a criminal amount. That's about all I can say negative about it, wish Maynard had some more vocal climaxes too but other than that, I fucking love this record bro. Descending & 7empest are easily top 3 Tool songs on any list & Invincible and Pneuma can easily make it to top 10 on any list. The other two, however, are good but missed the mark completely.

MJK said it was better 8 years ago. I wonder if Conditions of my Parole was written to be a Tool album and when it didn't come through, he got a few talented musicians and released the album with Puscifer. What would it have sounded like with the music by Tool? Probably a lot better than what we were recently given.
