If it has wax in it you should lightly sand the new gelcoat. That's why they make gelcoat without wax so you can layer without sanding in between coats.

Have you found out yet, since it's been a year? If not, it's because when you apply resin over the gel-coat - polyester over polyester - the styrene in the top/last layer chemically attacks the first layer, in this case the gel-coat, and softens it. The longer resin sits wet - not gelled - on the gel-coat, the longer the styrene in the resin will the react with gel-coat causing the softening. If you get this wrinkling it means either; *the gel-coat was applied to thin *the gel-coat wasn't left long enough to cure. the resin application over the gel-coat was not mixed with enough hardener *the ambient temperature was too low The statement about a maximum of 12 hours before applying resin is incorrect - it can be months - for the reason I've just stated, as the styrene in the resin will chemically breakdown the gel-coat and bond with it.

Cure time anytime between 5-12 hours. You can sand it back to remove tooling marks and give it a glossier finish. UV Wax can then be added

Hi, it depends on temperature and thickness. The maximum time you should leave it is 12 hours

It could be old, too cold, or just a different viscosity of gelcoat. Hard to say.

To prepare the fibreglass, you need to abrade to a rough finish, and give the whole area a good clean with acetone. This is the best method to getting a good bond

It's not something we do, there's tons of info on google about it though

you can do it but you first have to spray a thin layer of see through coat in the mold and then mix gelcoat with metalflake and spray or roll it on there.

We always recommend brush application for the best coverage

Definitely wouldn't work for this application - making a part from a mould. I think they still recommend you use a polishing compound for the sprayed products as well, to blend the repair into the rest of the gelcoat. £15-£20 for a one-use aerosol vs £6 for a 500g gelcoat that will keep for a year or so

The specific gravity of the gelcoat will vary depending on the temperature and application, so it's easier to do everything by weight

It could be an oversaturation of release agent, or you're not letting the gel tack off prior to laying up

You are; a/ not leaving the gel-coat to harden sufficiently. The styrene in the resin will chemically attack the gel-coat so it must be let cure long enough to resist it. b/ applying the gel-coat to thin c/ the ambient temperature is too low
