Thanks for this helpful review. I like the design of this knife, and its elegantly simple visual appeal. I also like the idea of Vanax being ultra corrosion resistant. It would be a bit hard though to accept having to deal with issues of a potentially burnt edge, lock rock (what’s up with the loose fitting stop pin?), and screws that may be prone to stripping on a $300 knife. You’ve done a great service as far as I am concerned.

Waypoint is my favorite knife,.i must say that first 😀. About that thay are done in cnc....well, all factory and mid tech knives are made by cnc, Hinderer, Chris reeve are way expensive than the waypoint and they definitely use cheaper steel than the vanax. Some titanium spydercos, and a lot Benchmades are close in price, but with cheaper materials. Trm are 100 less, but without titanium and vanax 🙂.

Yeah I've done a follow up video on this knife a long term update, which I'm alot happier about now and love the knife, it is expensive but considering what your getting I don't think it's out of line, almost no companies are using vanax because it's so expensive, and a knife that's completely corrosion proof is a great asset. But to each there own there's a lot of other great knives

@@NeevesKnives I have a first production run as well, had it now for approx 9 months. I freehand sharpen as well and because I'm OCD, within the first hour I'm putting my own edge on the knife, that's the joy in it for me. The small stop pin didn't give me any problems with play initially but, it did eventually show up. It's minimal but still frustrating. I will say that the corrosion resistance is legit, along with several other "rust proof" knives this one went on multiple offshore fishing trips that were as long as three days. I cut bait and line and rinsed in nothing but cobalt blue salt water. Not a spot of rust on the blade, the lc200n parts did show some rust coloring but easily wiped clean. I love this knife, absolutely one of my favorites, maybe I'll contact QC and try to get a replacement pin, just picked up the new drift , can't wait to see how it performs in comparison to its skinny sibling. Long comment,damn! Great review!

One of the biggest things with me is ease of carry. I like narrow knives,, light for their size and good blade/handle ratio. That design is perfect for me but after hearing about the problems on two different knives, I’m no longer interested. Once every few months or before I carry a knife I always check the screws with just a torx head from my BM blue box. It’s a POS but good for checking screw tightness. If a knife gets used hard the more of a chance of a screw loosening. It’s always worth the 30 seconds to check.
@NeevesKnives

Definitely always good to check your hardware, i check often these screws are very short since the knife is so thin, so it doesnt take much, i do love the knife, and im sure anything i cant deal with the company will

Great review! I actually had a similar experience with the factory edge. After sharpening on my KME the edge retention seems much better. Curious, what angle and grit did you sharpen yours at? I know some steels perform better with finer grits, and others perform better with toothier grits. Or maybe you still need to play with Vanax some more to reach a solid conclusion on that...

I’ll take a blade of great tool steel over great stainless any day. Performance, to me, is paramount and I’m not willing to sacrifice, hardness, edge retention, wear resistance, or toughness for corrosion resistance. I’ve not seen any stainless that can take the same degree of aggressive and persistent edge that a great tool steel can. The stainless steels that are hard enough to compete in edge retention are chippy and harder to sharpen/strop back to excellence, IME. If I’m spending premium dollars on a blade, I’m generally looking for K390, M4, CruWear, or Maxamet.

Another question, do you lubricate these knives? They have the bronze washers but they are not really load bearing. If they need to be lubricated then you may need to lubricate it again if you rinsed it after a marine environment. Personally I’d have a dedicated straight knife for the marine environment, ie a fishing knife.
@NeevesKnives
@NeevesKnives 2 года назад
I personally do, it's not going to require it as much as most for corrosion but is still good for keeping good smooth action, although washers can stay extremely smooth without adding anything all the time. The detent ball will want oil from time to time though

I love the look of this knife, I don’t know anything but is the corrosion resistance blade traded off against the hardness and the ability to retain an edge? I recently looked at a tungsten carbide blade with the red handle which doesn’t contain any iron at all.
@NeevesKnives
@NeevesKnives 2 года назад
It actually holds an edge very well, as good as m390 imo, usually toughness is a huge trade off with edge retention although we have some amazing steels, but getting all 3 is the hard part edge retention strength and corrosion resistance, while one goes up one goes down but again we have some incredible steels out there that do have a good ratio, and steels like vanax are insanely good, also magnacut is sweeping the community right now

Your description of the knife pretty much reflects my (limited) experience. The edge was indeed real bad out of the box (like 400 grit at most - I looked at it under 100x microscope - those mega scratches would scare small kids). It was basically roughly ground, but not sharpened. I took mine apart (out of curiosity) and while I did not adjust anything, the pivot keeps unscrewing withing few dozens flips, so some Loctite is a must. As someone that tends towards dry skin (especially in winter), I find the knife just a bit too slippery when closing/opening and that made me think of getting the G10 version and sell this one. Not sure. But I really, really like the blade and the whole design. What worries me is the level of support (like your lost pin) we can expect. When trying to communicate with QC the answers take quite a while and are cut short. Plus there is not other 'community' kind of support (like a company-run FB group - compare to e.g. TRM). Mine does not have any lock rock, the stop pin is as loose as yours. But the lock bar on mine seems to have a lot of tension, the knife gives more resistance as I would expect (and I played with the pivot screw quite a bit) BTW, to my knowledge these are outsourced to Taiwan. I saw that mentioned in one of the existing reviews (not really sure which one, I saw them all before I ordered the knife).

Yeah im hoping after i get a new screw and pin the rock will go away, im contacting them to replace it still no answer, and i love the knife but small improvements would be nice the screws are very shallow and have small threads, but either way i love the knife and happy to have it hopefully they replace the pin quickly

@@NeevesKnives I decided to return the knife as I couldn't accept these flaws from a $300 knife. Yeah, they use an exotic super steel, and yeah, the liner lock is LC200N, and yeah, it's rust proof, but they can't get tolerances right for a lanyard holder and their screws are unreliable. You also mention how their pivot screw has poor tolerances. I think CedricAda also mentions how his screws show wear after just disassembling his knife. And yes! - the knife making companies really need to wake up and only put thick ground blades on knives where it makes sense. That can't be said often enough. Knives with thin edges are still an exception rather than rule. 10 years ago Spyderco brought the Gayle Bradley folder - a heavy user - that has edge as thick as the Waypoint. I have not heard of anyone snapping it in use. And that is why I got one off the bay (incoming in a few days, super excited). Or the Microtech LUDT. Super thin edge on a hard working knife too.

So true! There's a ton of hard use knives at 10 to 15 thou bte that ive never seen broken, and theres ways to keep spine strength while keeping the life of a knife with great geometry and thinness bte the GB is a fantastic user one of the best
