Thank you to Basenor for sending these out. A subscriber requested a test, so here you are. One thing to add: I left out two clips on each side (near the middle/top) because I simply couldn't get them to go high enough to clip into the metal of the car. Even with this, the mats do not move.

It’s a very subtle change which could help reduce the wear and tear on a person during a long drive. I’m considering them as I do 25k a year in my Model3.

Great job addressing this! Cabin noise in Model 3 (especially wind noise) along with a stiff ride detract from an otherwise wonderful driving experience. Strange that Tesla didn’t do a better job considering the praise they received on Model S quietness.

Great video, I will be following this series for sure. I have heard that getting good tint on the windows including clear on the front windshield can help, but I haven’t tried anything myself. I tried doing a sound test with a meter between the Model 3 and Model Y and it seems like the Model Y is quieter. Not sure if they added sound deadening or if the fact that is so much newer contributes to that though.

I added the door seals and the rubber seal around the roof glass. The combination did make a difference for me on the highway. Just one of them without the other did not help.

I'm the opposite, wind noise is OK, tyre noise is huge and totally dependent on the surface, we have a section of motorway that's recently been resurfaced with some "new to Ireland" surface and it's heaven when you go on to it and hell when you come off, near silence versus a harsh buzzing/hissing and the speed has not changed. I put some foam/bitumen pads under the frunk tub which may have helped and is really easy to do. I have carpet +rubber mats in the frunk and sub trunk and also left the Tesla carpet mats in the footwells (front and back) when I put in the rubber floor mats.

I got a different AV that had window frames and although it was cheaper than the Tesla it does not have that same with noise at 70. I am pretty sure that sound is coming from all four windows not having a frame
@PhilT993
@PhilT993 3 года назад
I have seen that in the new Model 3 they have filled in the BIG square hole in the metal roof of the trunk under the rear parcel shelf. I think it is about a foot square or more. I read somewhere the the change was made to stop road noise getting into the cabin from the rear trunk area. You might check into that. Check out video by Paul Braren at 14:15 in.
@ourstate100
@ourstate100 3 года назад
the VAST majority of road/tire noise makes its way through things like the control arms and come from the floor of the M3 its not too difficult to pull the carpet out and put in a sounds deadner and MLV. try this for yourself... record audio with your phone in the driver seat and start tapping with something like the back of a screwdriver on your control arm and other components connected to the wheels and you will see just how much of that small tap makes its way into the cabin.
@scotttucker2557

You should look at second skin sound dampening for your floor it will eliminate underbody noise also add skid plate as it also protects and quiets the underbody also ho look at hankook Evo ev tires

I have never noticed wind noise as a major source of noise in my Model 3. Sure there is a bit, but that's frameless windows for you. The HUGE and DANGLY low hanging fruit is tire and road noise. (The difference between smooth and rough roads is very noticeable). This comes from two sources: Tire, and suspension. You noticed a small improvement with damped wheel wells, which I'd say represents tire noise. But in a car which has been carefully designed to be light, the suspension has got to be transferring vibrations to its supporting structures. Just not sure how one would dampen those easily.
@josipmatic4732

Take butyl-alufoil in coverage cca 25%, and over that cover up to 100% foam closed mats all wheel arches from inside! You can also do this at trunk, doors!
@donaldmoe3286

Chris, thanks for going to the trouble to test that set of mats. It appears that those mats are only for the front wheel wells, although the information on the Amazon page is not specific except for one comment further down the page. Are mats for the rear wheel wells also available? In my 2018 Model 3 DM the most tire noise seems to be from the rear wheels.
@DirtyTesla

Nothing for the rear. Those seem to have more fabric from the factory tho.

I adjusted all 4 windows for a tighter seal. That helped to lessen wind noise. Another indication I have a tighter seal: when power washing the car I see far less condensation at the edges of the window underneath where the class contacts the rubber seals around the B-pillar areas.

Loool if you broke half of the clips, sorry bro, you were not being careful. I took all 4 corners off including the underbody panels, didn't break a single clip. The trick is to wiggle it left and right a little and if it doesn't come out, is most likely you didn't pop the pin all the way out, so push it back in and pry it back out again. PS: you are better off pulling the stock guard down, spray some rubberized compound behind it instead. Also, majority of the road noise are actually coming from the doors, you get better result putting some sound deadening mats there instead

@1:00 >Well, that was a lie Completely teasing! Just disappointed to not see a series of videos on this topic after immediately hearing that! (could add the 18" VS 19" wheels video to this playlist? As those seem to make a noticeable difference in sound level reduction?) Im sure its difficult to make much progress on some EVs, but would love to see ambitious experiments to see what could be done given the motivation. Was just wondering what would happen if the entire inside of the tire was lined with the sound damping foam! What might be the effect considering that seems to be the bulk of the sound when on rough roads.. And ways to adjust any surfaces for improved wind noise.
@BrianJoslyn
@BrianJoslyn 3 года назад
I can't say I hear any difference. Personally, I don't believe trying to make an EV any quieter is worth bothering. What I'd like to know is when Tesla owners change their tires, are they changing to Tesla tires or something else. Tesla tires are made differently and are partly why they're as quiet as they are.
@DirtyTesla
@DirtyTesla 3 года назад
I got some other tires. Noise is about the same. The Tesla tires are very expensive.
@BrianJoslyn
@BrianJoslyn 3 года назад
Tesla should just make all season tires so owners can change them annually or maybe even about every 18 months. But they have to be GOOD all season tires. I don't believe I'd want more than about six months of wear and tear on tires before snow flies each year.
