Remember the first time Merilwen fought someone when she tried shooting them in the knee to incapacitate them? And now she bear mauls people and melts them with moon fire. I think she's been hanging around prudence for too long.
Nah I think kthulu is just gradually corrupting them all, either that or Prudence is secretly enthralling them into insanity for her own nefarious ends
I am not at all surprised that Merilwen completely avoids an epic boss battle with the Power of Friendship. What I am surprised by is her creating a meatgrinder, raining down moon fire, and cleaving heads off shoulders with her bear hands. Surprised, but still pleased ... and terrified.
But it also goes the other way around. Don't let them roll if they can't win. Because nothing is worse than rolling a 20 and still failing. It happened on my first ever roll.
@@mennograafmans1595 Wait so you rolled a natural 20 an still failed? Because there are really difficult checks that you have to get a nat 20 for or fail but if you hit it and still failed that is just really dumb..
@@Suztvfan Not necessarily. Nat 20 being an automatic success is a common house rule, but its not in the book. And sometimes a player wants to do something really ill informed and can't be dissuaded. An impossible skill check is kind of a lazy solution, but sometimes you just can't come up with something clever.
Jesse Birmingham Hmm but should the GM just out right say that the task is impossible cause of (-Explain Reason-) and that even a nat 20 wouldnt make it possible
“Did you ever hear the Tragedy of Watch Commander the quiet? I thought not. It's not a story the Adventurers’ Guild would tell you. It's a Keep it Down legend. Watch Commander was an acolyte of the Order of Keep it Down, so silent and so devout he could use the harmonics to influence the acoustics to create absolute quiet... He had such a knowledge of keeping it down that he could even keep the ones he cared about from crying out when they died. He became so proud of his job the only thing he was afraid of was losing his job, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he was caught up in celebration on the capture of a prisoner, and the prisoner asked him to express his pleasure and Watch Commander gleefully shouted to high heaven. It's ironic, he could save others from making noise, but not himself.”
Sadly Prudence's title of Most Terrifying person has been lost to the hippie wood elf who can create meat grinders, cause people to melt like the Nazis who found the lost ark and can decapitate people as a bear if all else fails
At first Cthulhu is like, "Prudence, WTF." And then all the spikes, and the torture with Heat Metal... and talk of "cooking in a thunder wave"... and a "let's place the corpse on the alter in a really weird pose after we strip it but before rigor mortise sets in" happens with Prudence barely having to lift a finger and Cthulhu is all, "Ah well, all right then."
Dob: I have a spell for this.... me: *Thinks he's gonna turn the guy into a duck or something Dob: Heat metal. Me: holy-......is everyone 100% sure that they didn't accidentally bring back evil Dob from their last Oxventure?
My problem is that I know exactly how it should look: Merilwen looking in wide eyed horror at the carnage, Dob and Corazon either looking wide eyed at the carnage, too, or giving Merilwen the side eye look meaning “What have you become?” and Prudence either rubins her hands in delight or dancing happily in the rain of blood coming from the carnage happening off screen to the right. But I suuuuuck at painting. Please, Bendix, as a fellow dane, do what I cannot do and bring it to life.
Can I just say how hilarious it is that Johnny KNEW that they were gonna steal the gold off of the wheels? "The wheels of steel have returned?" That pun relies on the fact that the steel has been exposed and oh my gosh I love everything about this
@@reaganorton1710 Well, to be fair, they weren't really expecting the meat grinder to turn out the way it did. They expected charlie brown slipping into the air and landing on a rose bush. Heat Metal, just from reading it, is brutal. If going by actual physics the metal heats to 900 degrees Fahrenheit, for a minute.
Prudence obliterated someone in the first episode. They pretty much were this way from the beginning though a couple levels have drastically increased their damage output.
I love how Dob has essentially just been corrupted by Prudence and now he's even more sadistic than her Edit: Merrilwen is fine with swearing and brutal murders and Egbert was hugely into exploding a church. Corazon is suddenly very nice and moral.
Omg I've just realised it has nothing to do with Prudence - when evil dobs appeared it wasn't just him - these are actually the opposites from are usual gang
I think we can all agree that what none of us, particularly not Johnny, were expecting was the boss battle dissolving into a moral debate on what to do with a domestic owlbear. But at this point, I think we should have. When have boss battles ever turned out the way they were supposed to with the OutsideXteam?
Thelving the Wing Boss 1: Forgot boss weighs about 30 pounds and has no hand to hand combat skills. Immediately gets chokehold-ed into submission. Boss 2: All minions are removed before the battle even starts, turning it into a 1v5 where everyone involved is about equal in power. Boss 3: Made of metal and clockwork, immediately gets electrocuted and has its mechanisms exploded before it can move. Boss 4: Another 1v5, literally no idea what John was planning here but boss gets ragdolled immediately because it’s a freaking 1v5. Boss 5: Dumb animal boss, forgets party has a player who can charm dumb animals. No fight. I don’t think John thinks these scenarios through.
George Sears Well, as a wise man once said "No plan survives contact with the enemy." Johnny actually mentioned in a previous one that part of the scenario was made up on the spot because the party made choices he'd failed to plan for. Like with #2: IIRC he hadn't expected them to find a way to take out all the foot soldiers before the fight started. This one was hilarious though. It's a very Ellen thing.
I love how Johns plans never go the way he expected. That short pause and then the astonished “alright” as he has to adapt to the new situation. Like a brilliant plot twist in a movie. And the Real drama being the debat in the group wether to sell the owlbear into slavery or releasing it.
Andy: Merilwen? Ellen: Uh 23 Everyone: Whoa Mike: Turn back into a bear Ellen: :) Jane: Meat grinder! Grind them up! Ellen: :D Luke: Sing to it the song of your people Ellen: *nods enthusiastically* Johnny: Merilwen is first, what are you gonna do? There is an Owlbear in the room and two guards that are like Rrrgh! Andy: "Let's mess this Owlbear, let's **** it up" Ellen: K. Ellen: I'm gonna try and cast *camera zooms in* ANIMAL FRIENDSHIP Everyone: *GROANS* I would like to point out, that Ellen did not give this away at all. Like, sure, this fits in with her character but everyone forgot and Ellen nodding enthusiastically at everyone's violent solution despite planning on befriending the Owlbear is just absolutely hilarious to me.
@@khamjaninja. You're not wrong, but remember that everyone involved here, including Jonny, is a novice when it comes to D&D. They're having fun, that's what counts.
I know right? As someone who plays a warlock, make Cthulhu proud. Kill everyone. Eldritch blast the prisoners. Thaumaturgy some shit to go with that bell. Anyways, super fun to watch them play still. Nevermind, just got to the end. Prudence rocks.
Yeah, oddly Pru seems more often than not to be one of the voices of reason on this team, even trying to protect Merilwens innocence by telling her to look away in a previous adventure.
Dob: about to torture a guy with sound, made a soldier stab his ally in the neck, made that same soldier swallow the key to his prision cell Corazon: turned a guy in two a g u y(turned him into three parts), and poked a guy to death. Edberg: Made a guy commit heracy to his own religion and turned a couple of people to ash. Merilwen: meat grinder, bear attack, and melted people with a moon. ... Prudence: casted protection from swords and ALMOST killed a animal WTF, each member did a total 180 (Funny AF tho)
Why everyone insists Prudence did nothing? She probably whispered yes to Cthulhu when it asked to drive everyone in the party insane. Jane level Evil !!!
Holy shit... this squad gets a little bit of power and all the sudden they go from being a ragtag group of loveable rogues to plotting to kill a group of travelling minstrels, slaughtering soldiers with deadly meatgrinder traps, and torturing prisoners with Heat Metal... I thought this was a family channel... my dog is terrified right now...
I just love the world building. It's both comical and "simple," with the name of the order being "the order of keeping it down." But it's also really detailed, with things like the "passwave" and the announcements with large cloths. Even stuff like the stealth being super easy, since they won't alert others even when attacked. It's interesting world building mixed with super on-the-nose writing. I wouldn't have imagined such a combination would work so well, but it's both fascinating to learn about this "quiet town," and hilarious to see the goofy order.
@WiseGirl127 it's a good business opportunity, (after our "good guy" adventuring party comes to town), and I'm guessing, another side venture/source of revenue for Corazon?
Mt favorite part is how you guys stay "in context in character", so when Jane picks up her real glass to drink, she keeps her hands crossed as if she is actually shackled xD
The reactions to Merilwen casting Moonbeam for the first time in this episode are so, so funny coming back now after Moonbeam has become what it is in the Oxventure Canon 😅
@@theCoziDoz fyenga bus sounds like venga bus which is from a song called we like to party by the vengaboys. it was the ending song to the previous dnd adventure i think
I love how in the previous outing they turned the NPC sidekick into a fussy baby in a papoose so this time Johnny just made the new NPC sidekick a stupid jester from the outset.
So when Johnny was asked to DM the Oxbox team I beat he was like sure, why not. They take it seriously right? Twelve episodes later Merilwen's meat ginder.
Johnny actually said in a previous episode that he had to improvise because they found a way to jump the script so hard that it completely broke. Then at the ends the look on Johnny's face when Ellen's like "I'm going to charm the owlbear." he got out TWO books to look up whether that was even possible! that was obviously not what he was planning for!
Mar Hawkman The ability to ad lib when your players go off script is an essential talent for any DM! I once had a player point blank refuse to help someone, which was the story hook! The next few hours were a frantic session where I had make everything up on the spot!
@@Geek-LDS This is the best part about dungeons and dragons. You can literally choose "any action". It's also the bad part. Having a guy develop the results of your actions on the spot while following the rules.
It might be a little late to point out that "hieratic" is a real word meaning "of or concerning priests", or alternatively "a cursive writing system used for Ancient Egyptian", but why should I waste a good googling? ;-)
- Spoilers - First Merilwen turns this adventure to the bloodiest one so far. Then she makes a 180 and delivers the kindest "finisher". I don't know if I should love her, hate her or just accept that she is the foxiest of them all.
I just realized....when Prudence is talking with Cthulhu, Corazon and Dob and Egbert all feel uncomfortable and slightly corrupted. Merilen, meanwhile, is as happy as ever. I think her corruption has already been completed.
Funny story, the paladin for the curse of strahd game I was in asked the dm if he could roll to find a stick. The dm jokingly said yes. So he roll for it, and nat 1. So he looks around and cannot find a stick. We were in the woods 😅.
@Stoneysilence No, I meant that Merilwen/Ellen has no problem with destroying the robotic versions of animals, so that's the loophole for Johnny to exploit if he wants to avoid the boss battle turning into a moral debate or a friendship bracelet making session in the future, lol
Can I just say how much I love that this far in you still put in the graphics for spells and rolls and such. It's that sort of consideration that really puts you guys a cut above the rest
First, I'm glad they didn't censor Johnny. Second, I love how in episode one, they were upset that Prudence killed someone and now they've almost stopped caring completely. Prudence has done well in corrupting the party.
I can just imagine the townspeople's reaction to one of the quiet guards running loudly from the church and wondering to themselves WTF happened in there for him to be making noise.
I was really hoping for more of Prudence... that's just the way it works out in some sessions,...next time, I suppose. Merilwen has become quite the powerhouse in combat, Dob's quick thinking has significantly improved (using his spells in creative and beneficial ways), Egbert offers good support and commentary, and Corazon really shone as the spokesperson. Jane had some really good dialogue as Prudence, but I felt like there was an underlying frustration with the lack of opportunities to use her newer powers (this was brought out in a roundabout way during her conversations with Cthulhu, which was very amusing). All in all, a great adventure. I love that Johnny continues to allow the players to run roughshod over his best laid plans and still manages to surprise them (and us) without breaking continuity. Of course, there's also that long-term and intricately laid out joke over the course of the session with the punch-line at the end, it's almost as if he could see the future in anticipation of it...
This adventure had everything! Gold for Corazon, animal rescue for Merilwen, supporting the fine arts for Dob, proving his religion is better for Egbert, and awful bloody violence for Prudence!
well each of the sessions has focused on a different character The Spicy Rat: meet (almost) everyone A Spot of Bother: Corazon Wild Wild Woods: Merilwen An Orcward Encounter: Prudence (Tiefling Crypt) Quiet Riot: Egbert Untitled Live EGX 2018: Dob?
Dont you hate it when your players befriend your boss? Congrats to jhonny on being a great DM and adapting to all the plot twists the team pulls on him
Ah, but she's incited/helped convince both Dob and Merilwen - arguably the most 'Good' aligned of the group - into one of Corazon's plans that resulted in the deaths of almost 20 non-Cthulhu worshippers. There may be madness in her methods but there is also a method to the madness.
This is the moment in history when Merilwen became the scariest one! I'll never look at her the same again! Please don't spike and/or decapitate me formerly sweet wood elf! Also, Dob appears to have turned into the Purple Man...DAMN! Johnny Total got me with that end joke!
