This video shows how to reduce or silence the outside noise made by direct vent water heaters, sometimes called power vented water heaters. It shows you how to make a sound suppressor/resonator made of materials costing less than $10 and how to easily install it. This solution works and it does not involve much effort. Simple and effective noise reduction for exhaust vents from your power vented water heater.
This solution is specifically intended for noisy exhaust vents with a 3" diameter over a short run. This video showcased a Bradford White direct vent water heater with about a 4' vertical rise and 3' horizontal run, with one 90 degree elbow. Repairs or modification to systems are at your own risk. Consult a professional if you are unsure of the work.
*UPDATE*
• Part 2: RESULTS of qu... Hear the results!
Using an app called Sound Meter on my android phone (all I had) I measured the dB drop. I measured inside and outside for 30 seconds with the blower on from about 3 feet away from the vent and blower, and it gave the average dB.
Outside it dropped from 70.5dB to 47.9dB wow!!
Inside it dropped from 62.5dB to 58.4dB

i would love a follow up video to this where he pulls it out and takes a look at what it looks like today. there is a lot of moisture that comes through that vent. my guess is that the insulation collets a lot of it and creates a perfect spot for mold.

You got it! Fiberglass isn't designed to handle moisture well. Everytime that furnace fires up and shuts off its going to be a musty nightmare in there. He created a silencer but should have considered using materials that don't absorb water

Thanks for the great idea ! Now if there were only some video and audio recording of the noise AFTER the modifications. Since you can easily remove the muffler portion, get a sound level meter, "C" weighting, fast response, and measure both inside and outside the home, and post the data here !! Thanks again for the great idea !!!!

Thanks for the great suggestion Robert! - I thought of that when I was doing the video but the only decibel meter I have would be an app on my phone. Would that do the "C" weighting? I was reading about A,C, and Z...do you think C weighted would be better than A? I read this online: "It is extremely important that sound level measurements are made using the correct frequency weighting - usually A-weighting. For example, measuring a tonal noise of around 31 Hz could result in a 40 dB error if using C-weighting instead of A-weighting." I do know that while the sound at the outlet was not super loud per se, it had this unbelievable ability to travel - maybe like a bass? It sounded like a hairdryer anywhere in the house - and now that is gone. But let me work on measuring it - that's the basis of good science! Thanks again!
@robertklacza1160
@robertklacza1160 3 года назад
The "A" weighting rolls off the readings of low and high frequencies. The "C" weighting corresponds better with the "Noise Annoyance" of the blower motor system noise. Most of the 'sound level meter' apps on my smartphone work fine, but true calibrated Sound Pressure Level meters can get pricey... What we are looking for is the relative dB value of the reduction in your muffler technique ! Using five different SPL meter apps, the noise of my noisy direct vent hot water heater gave values in the 68 to 72 dB SPL range. With the blower off, the background noise was 38 dB SPL. According to one of the apps, that 72 dB value corresponded to "Busy Traffic". All of the readings were taken standing in front of the hot water heater.

If I was lower, the dB meter hit 52.3 dB. Hope that helps. It was really loud when I removed it! I quickly got used to the quiet! :)

Question, how would you install an air trap in one of these hot water heaters so that I don't get a draft back into the house? The exhaust on my tank is 2 inches, would you recommend that I use a 1 inch pipe? Maybe I am overly thinking this, but if there is any condensation in the exhaust couldn't it potentially create mold on the insulation? Thanks

I do have a question. Hi. What model of Bradford Whitewater heater is this? I’m just very curious. I used to have one and I like the sound can you please tell me
@spanieaj

My problem involves the resonant noise is heard INSIDE the house. My exhaust pipe is 2" and the horizontal run is about 12 feet to the vertical that connects to the W.H. fan.
@justayoutuber1906
@justayoutuber1906 3 года назад
Hey Gus - the sound I heard was definitely heard inside the house in the upstairs bedrooms. It would wake me up at night. The strange thing is the sound right at the source in the basement didn't seem to be that loud, it must have been magnified - with your long straight horizontal run, it may actually make it worse, like a long alpenhorn. Since you are dealing with a 2" pipe, you can't go smaller. My suggestion is maybe 1) keep the 2" but maybe add a few 90 degree elbows or 2) use a 3" pipe as as a sleeve for a resonator over the 2" pipe. Moving the resonators closer to the fan motor and before the 12 foot horizontal run might help as well. This could quiet the noise earlier and inside the house. Would love to see your video of what you decide to do. It would be great to have an example of an "over-resonator" on youtube - where the 2" pipe remains and the insulation is built up on the outside of the pipe, but contained in a 3" pipe sleeve. Good luck and please let us know what happens!

@justayoutuber1906
@justayoutuber1906 3 года назад
Hi Vladek. On this model there is a control door on the side. Unplug the power, open the door with a screwdriver, and you twist the little thermostat adjustment with a screwdriver. On mine it is grey plastic and on the bottom of the controller (the thing with the red button). Close up, and plug back in. Good luck!

Iiiim not so sure that's a good idea.... my boiler vents that way and I could see that A. getting moldy inside a cold pipe and B. blocking airflow, putting both strain on the fan and maybe pushing CO back into the basement

just a heads up, if you're in Canada you MUST use ULC636 approved Gas Vent Pipe to do this. ABS DWV and Schedule 40 PVC are not legal for use in flue gas venting applications. For those in the US, the use of UL1738 approved Gas Vent Pipe is highly encouraged, and is required by law in some states already. As a general rule of thumb, ABS DWV and Schedule 40 PVC pipe is not rated for continuous use under the temperature of the flue gasses that are passing through them. Its also worth noting that the fittings some of these pipe systems use are only glued in place, not chemically welded with a solvent. The glue used for connecting ABS fittings to ABS DWV pipe in particular has been known to crack over time when used for flue gas vent applications. This is the exact reason more than a decade ago it was made mandatory in Canada to use ULC636 gas vent pipe.

Great info - thank you. Yes this water heater is in the US and states on it to use ABS as the vent pipe. But different countries may have different build codes. What you reference I just read about here. www.plasticsnews.com/article/20181015/NEWS/181019947/plastic-venting-producers-seek-code-update-for-safety Its strange to see that manufacturer's testing and local testing can be different.

@@InkedUpHonda Please explain. I definitely don't want to do that.
@InkedUpHonda
@InkedUpHonda 3 года назад
@@justayoutuber1906 There is a pressure switch so if you impede the venting too much hopefully that safety will open and shut the inducer motor off. But every manufacturer of Any gas equipment states not to put any changes to the venting and install exactly to manufacturers specs. The black ABS piping it’s not made for the heat that the flue gasses create. So they get brittle and the fittings crack the glue is only glueing the pipe and usually after a few years cracks and wears from expansion and contraction of the hot water tank cycling. The new pipe is called S636 vent piping and it’s made for fluegas temperatures what happens with the glue on that pipe is it mechanically welds the two plastics together of each fitting. Way better. With this guys video the big problem with his installation and why he’s getting so much noise is because the manufacturer recommends at least 12 inches of straight venting off the top of the tank prior to any fitting. And I guarantee the tank has never been commissioned or tuned after installation so the gas pressure is high and that’s why he’s getting the reverb. Back to why I wouldn’t put a baffle regardless of what the manufacturer says is because now you’re impeding the flu gases and the heat is increasing in the venting so on already crappy venting not made for the job you’re slowing down the flu gases And making the problem even worse so, Before you know it your carbon monoxide detectors going off in your house if you even have one and hopefully nobody gets sick because the venting has cracked because you didn’t like the noise of an improperly installed hot water tank

@@justayoutuber1906 Not to mention when that insulation gets wet who knows if it starts flopping down in those holes and blocks the main vent pipe this is just so willy-nilly if I saw this I would disconnect the gas appliance so fast
