“The purpose of our lives is to be happy.” - Dalai Lama
Quilpie has a charm all of its own. Known as the ‘Jewel of the Outback’ and ‘End of the Line’, It’s a great Outback town in Queensland’s South-West.
Our welcome to Quilpie was somewhat of a surprise, with the fabulous art works along the main street. We took the time to admire the cattle and horse silhouettes and sandstone sheep sculptures. But the best surprise (according to Michael) was the FREE high pressure car/truck wash down facility - perfect for a dirty car and caravan 😊
We enjoyed learning about the history of the town! Everything from the old town bore, the rail line and proud military history. And our visit to Bald Top Lookout was worth the short drive out of town on an unsealed road. The ten-minute scramble to the summit over the magnificent boulder formations was relatively easy and we were amazed by the breathtaking panoramic landscape.
Our stay in Quilpie ticked all the boxes - busy and relaxing! And when it comes to Quilpie camping, you can’t beat a stay at The Lake and The Channel Country Tourist Park and Spas - we stayed at both fabulous locations!
Time to hit the road!

I recently drove to Quilpie with my partner and I can honestly say that it was one of the most disappointing trips of my life. First, the highways were littered with rubbish and carcasses of dead kangaroos, sometimes three or four lying dead next to each other. All three campgrounds we stopped at had been vandalized: the ground was littered with broken glass. And when we finally got to Quilpie, which is nothing more than an ugly dusty village, we got a room in a wooden shack for the price of a small hotel in Paris. The whole outback has been stripped of vegetation, the wildlife has all but disappeared, and most land is in private hands. In the middle of nowhere all there is to see is barbwire and skinny cows munching on shrubs. I wonder how this country would have looked like today if it had been colonized by Scandinavians or Japanese.
