Thank you so much for demonstrating on a full sized quilt! I am so annoyed at tutorials using little 10-inch blocks. Ugh! There is a HUGE difference between quilting on a 10-inch square and quilting on a full quilt. It's the "real life" demonstrations that help the most! I so appreciate all of your videos.

After saving for over 10 years, I was FINALLY able to purchase a sewing machine in January! I've been so excited and sewing quilt tops like crazy. I've already made 2 and will be starting on a 3rd one today. Now I know how to finish them up so I can make more! Thanks for a great tutorial.

This tutorial was very helpful. I have always relied on spray basting and am just tired of the overspray (and the expense). Last year when I was Spring cleaning, I found cobwebs in the basement that were glued in place! 😃I'm working on my second quilt using pins. Hard on old arthritic hands, so I think I'm going to invest in the tool you showed. My oh so helpful husband went out and found me an old ping pong table and set it up in the basement this week. Bless his heart.....I'm only 4'11 so I'm going to have to find a step stool so I can reach the center of the table. The quilts I'm working on have backs and fronts that need to be centered. What I did was glued a small button on the middle spot of the table and then found my front and back centers. Did this on the batting as well, so everything worked out as far as overhang of backing and batting around the perimeter. Funny...........my extra set of hands is always my husband. When we were laying out the batting, he knew and kept saying to me....don't pull..... "lift and drape". He must have been listening from the other room. (Which I find amazing because usually when I ask him something from another room he says he can't hear me). Thanks again for your wonderful instruction. I think you're a great teacher!

I love that your viewpoint, as a male, gives us other options (like carpenter's clips instead of large paper binder clips, for example). This was exactly the tutorial I needed to understand how to make my first large quilt on a regular sized machine. Thanks so much!

I also love that you are appealing to men to try their skills in the area of sewing and not feeling like they are not infringing on a females only activity.

Wow! I just discovered Man Sewing. This was great. So many patterns and quilting books just say make a quilt sandwich and then quilt as desired. They never tell you how to make the sandwich. Thanks for the help.

Thank you for doing a real size quilt. I'm a beginner and you have no idea how much your tutorial has helped me!! Ironing it out before basting...didn't know. Getting off the floor...didn't know. Fitting it in a machine and rolling it OUT as you go...didn't know. ALL OF THESE makes a huge difference.

Great instructions for basting a quilt prior to FMQ on a domestic machine. So nice to see that you are human and forgot to check the layout of the batting but you got away with it! LOL Your tutorials are very informative and fun to watch.

Very cool ideas using common hardware tools; that helps save some cash for fabric and batting! Rob takes time to describe each detail with the visual; catching both the auditory and visual learners plus giving us shortcuts. I also love when he relates his learning process; that makes me feel better about not being perfect the first time. After viewing this tutorial I feel better equipped to tackle larger quilts! Thanks Rob :)

Such a Ah-hah moment. Like you showed at the end, I was thinking I had to keep rolling as I worked...making it too much to fit into the opening of my machine. Never dawned on me until I saw you do it...you unroll and work to the right. Also loved the idea of using the batting to make my work table into a large ironing board in order to iron my backing. Thank you sooo much for the demo.

Excellent tutorial on sandwiching and basting large quilts!!! Thank you for demonstrating this on showing on a large quilt instead of a small quilt sandwich, as it helps A LOT to see someone get this process done by alone. So much helpful information that I couldn't stop watching and will probably watch a few more times when ready to start FMQing on a quilt (vs. practicing quilting). Ya done good, Rob!!!!!

Rob, thank you for actully demonstrating a quilt that is larger than your table top. I am a visual person so this helps a lot. People talk about the clamps, but never really knew WHICH clamps. Also best piece of info is the roll in the throat of machine. I also thought you rolled the quilt into the throat instead of away from. 😂

What's so funny is just the day before you posted this, I had on my to-do list to go find a library book to read some helpful hints on sanwiching this bargello quilt I've had on the back burner. The semester just began and haven't had enough snow days to make time. You must have known! Because 'lo and behold in my weekly email of Rob's Man Sewing is a video tutorial of exactly what I needed! You're the best! Your energy and enthusiasm is contagious. Thanks so much! Now I just have to work ahead in my classes and papers to reward myself with some quilting time!

This tutorial was the best I've seen on basting and how to prepare for quilting it. Rob, you really explained everything well and makes it look easy. (And it's good to know that I am not the only one who finds her/himself too close to the edge of the batting after pinning. Also loved the quilt top pattern you used. Design and color was awesome!

It is a very chilly weekend in Alberta, (-18 C). So I have decided to make a quilt for a friend. I have all my pieces cut out and am ready, but am overwhelmed on what to do next. I just spent quite a lot of time watching your amazingly easy to watch and follow tutorials and am now ready to attempt to baste and then free motion quilt. Thanks for making this look real and doable. I am excited to get started thanks to your videos........ Wish me luck!!!

I use the super giant binder clips from the office supply store as the "clamps." Inexpensive and can be turned into a chip clip when not in use!
