QUILT FEVER
Directed by Olivia Loomis Merrion
www.oliviamerrion.com/
"Many of us have had at least one quilt in our lives: a gift as a baby, a graduation present, or simply an overlooked item lying around the house while growing up. What we probably fail to consider is that it is a true artform, with its own community and superstars creators-artists and hobbyists that all come together to celebrate their passion once a year for QuiltWeek in Paducah, Kentucky-aka Quilt City, USA. S/W alum Olivia Loomis Merrion is back with a warm and heartfelt documentary about this week-long extravaganza, shedding light on a charming subculture unknown to most.
Fresh off a residency with the Center for Investigative Reporting, Loomis Merrion was looking for lighter content for her next film, which would allow her to prioritize fun, a sense of playfulness from her subjects, and a lightness of tone and style. Quilts had been in the back of her mind-this underappreciated artform that requires creativity, skill, and dedication, yet is marked by a lack of pretension. At the same time, the challenge of doing a film in one space over a set amount of time was also driving her. After a bit of research, QuiltWeek appeared on her computer screen, and with DP John Picklap, they decided to go to Kentucky. It was bare-bones prep however-before the event, in addition to their online research, all they did was interview a few quilters to get a good sense of Paducah. The direction the film would take would happen in the moment.
It is widely known that, in documentaries, the editing process can make or break the film. In this case, the whole film was built in post. Loomis Merrion and Picklap showed up to the event not knowing where to start and solely focusing on capturing moments that they would figure out how to piece together in the edit room. Because of the structure of the event, there is a beginning and an end, so they had a starting point and a finishing one, but everything in between was a wild card. This process adds a personal touch to the tone of the film, as we, the audience, experience the film alongside the filmmakers and the camera, discovering this community at the same pace as they did. This put a lot of pressure on the editing, but thankfully Nico Bovat and Loomis Merrion found a compelling way of showcasing the event, alternating between testimonies from a selection of quilters and the competition aspect of the event, an approach which provides terrific personal flavor via the testimonies, but also supplies a sense of stakes, lending an emotional climax to the film’s general structure." - S/W Curator, Céline Roustan

This is the closest I will ever get to Paducah. There are thousands of us out here, quilting away on our own, quietly finding our own harmony. Thank you for this.

Due to the Covid pandemic, quilt shows have been canceled for 2020. What a disappointing time for quilters who want to gather and share their love of fabric art. The quilt community is hoping that 2021 will bring back these celebrations of a beloved and important craft. Thank you for making this video.

This is great video. Feb. 16, 2024. I had the pleasure in 2007 of visiting Nashville for a quilt show and staying at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel. Wow! What a fantastic trip. We had a day trip to Paducah and visited the Quilt Museum. Also Paducah fabrics. It was blazing hot outside, thank goodness for air conditioning. Marion in Oregon.

I am fairly new to quilting. We don't have quilt shows in the UK that I know of. I found my love of quilting through Utube. I now see Eleanor, Jenny and Donna. I have learned so much from those beautiful ladies. My first throw size quilt was A Trip Around The World taught by Eleanor Burns. Thank you so much to you all.

Alan Peters no one I know quilts, so for me it’s my sweet solitary pursuit, but love watch quilting shows and videos....pleases me to see others enjoying it too. I finally arranged my sewing room in the most comfortable setup, even if I’m not sewing, I’m cutting, or watching videos dreaming of the next project. My husband knows he can find me in my sewing room.

@@Kate98755 that's nice that you have a place you can go and immerse yourself in something you have passion for, my mother did not have a room dedicated solely to quilting or sewing but she always talked about how she wanted one, it was her happy place when she was quilting but as she got more I'll she couldn't anymore, thanks for responding, I think of her everyday but this just made the thoughts that much more special. Take care and enjoy your sewing room 😊

loriar1027 Agree! I see dear Eleanor, as that “grandma” everyone loves, for our quilt generation. She brought quilt inspiration right into our homes. It seems Miss Jenny, was handed the torch to carry it on. She’s everyone’s favorite neighbor lady! Both are down to earth, salt of the earth, folks. No “above us” expert attitude it’s always fun and happy! They share with and include, family first; then generously to ALL, the tender love and joy of quilting. They’re our big and little sisters, with a God given gift of infectious Quilt Charisma! ❤️

This was awesome. I am a newbie Quilter inspired by Jenny Doan, Donna Jordan and Eleanor Burns. Due to the stay at home because of Covid19 I had to find me a new hobby so I started the Quilt trend. Seeing this video and seeing all these beautiful Quilts inspires me even more but I am no match. I have laughed with these ladies " Quilters are nice people until there is only 2 yards in the bolt" and cried with Anita Huber, your quilt is beautiful. Now I want to go to Paducah.

This was a lovely and moving short film, but as a quilter I could not help but notice what I notice every time I attend a quilt show, class or guild meeting: the average age of the quilters in the room. I know quilting is something many of us cannot take up seriously (let alone afford) till the careers are done and the family raised, but I am concerned that we are not really seeing the numbers of young quilters coming along that the industry must want to see, and that we older quilters would like to know will take up the baton.
