this is 2023 and iv just watched your video and what you said made perfect sense, its home made and not mass produced and you should be proud of yourself because you've made that and i think its beautiful so very well done, because everything that is handmade we should all be proud of ourselves because we can say WE,VE made that x
These are really cute placemats however when you are getting ready to sew the strips together on the batting go ahead and start with a completed sandwich (backing with right side down, batting and then add the pieces) just as you did before. That way when you have the top done, you also have the quilting done on the bottom so that all you have to do then is to trim the edges and add the binding. I love your jelly roll idea though.
great job! Please do not apologize for being new and a novice with quilting. We all have to learn somewhere, and somehow. I have been sewing for 40 years, I used to mainly make clothes, but I made a few quilts. The 1st one I made was for my oldest daughter when I was pregnant. She recently turned 37 and still treasures it to this day, and her 2 children have even used it a few times. I STILL make mistakes, and I STILL learn new things all the time! If I may make a suggestion, instead of pinning your placemats when quilting, because they are small, a great (and much less painful) way to sandwich your backing to the batting and quilted top, is washable, non toxic glue! Yes, good old Elmer's school glue. It washes out and you only use small dots in multiple places between the backing and the batting. You iron it after putting the dots of glue between the layers to dry it. It will save you you from painful pin pokes and dots of blood on your projects. Check out the videos here on youtube. Lisa Capon Quilts has some GREAT videos on using glue, as do many other quilters. Again, great job! Don't sell yourself short, and homemade, is made with love!
Well done for a beginner. May I suggest that you can cut out a step by putting the backing fabric under the batting before you start to quilt as you go on the top. This way it is all done in one step. Hope that helps in the future.
I have been sewing for many years, this is the first time I have seen anyone use bias tape for binding place mats. Absolutely brilliant. Good job. Thanks for the great tutorial.
I've made placemats and runners this way and found that the quilting done while putting the strips together is sufficient. Just stitch around the perimeter before binding. They look great. And love those Walmart jelly rolls.
Hello my name is Marianne and I'm from South Jersey and I am a quilter and right now I am working on the quilt top the fan and I liked your placemats and when I go to work at Walmart tomorrow I will buy the batting and I will try to make the placements thank you for sharing have a good day
I brought these exact jelly rolls last year. Got 4 of them. I have been trying to figure out what to do with them. Now I know. Lol. Your video is much better then another I watched for this type of placement.
I learned a new way to make placemats & I will definitely try this with the exception of the bias tape for binding. The bias tape is small for me to handle so I'll just make my own binding.
It's refreshing seeing someone sew with something other than Moda fabrics. Don't get me wrong, it's beautiful but expensive fabric that not everyone can afford. Beautiful things can be made with less expensive fabric. You just have to understand that the life of the fabric won't be as good. But I'm fine with that for most things.
The Walmarts in my area either haven't gotten this fabric, already sold out or won't get it - lol! Great tutorial and they're beautiful! The only thing I would say is that when you add your binding, if you would start it going in the other direction all the excess fabric would be to the left of the presser foot and not bunch up under the "harp" of the sewing machine - if that makes sense. The harp is the space from the right of the needle to where the machine curves - for those that don't know. Also, if you don't have them you should pick up some Wonder Clips. They are really handy to use in place of pins when sewing on binding and other bulky edges.
They look absolutely fantastic and you are a real pro at explaining how to do things! I love the colours, especially in the autumn leaves fabric. Hope the family enjoy using them!
Thanks, I'm also a beginner trying to make placemats, I like the way you explained how to sew the binding. Nice combination of fabrics, I'll try your method ❣️❣️🤩
Thanks for showing us how you make your placemats. It shows you put a lot of love into your work. Have a great week. I look forward to your cross stitch updates next week.
Thanks so much for the fun tutorial! I haven't tried quilting but these placemants look like something I can do. I'm going to WM tomorrow to find that cute fabric!
Great tutorial!! You are wonderful at these , I use your stocking tutorial every time I work on putting one together! Thanks so much , Kim T in Florida
Thank you so much for this video. It’s my first time on your channel. I was working on our taxes & needed a break. 😊 So happy your video popped up & I am now a subscriber! Only two suggestions. Try using the Wonder Clips when binding. They’ve helped me immensely. I also suggest using a Clover sewing stiletto or That Purple Thang to save your fingers when holding the fabric under the needle for precise sewing. All are available on Amazon. I can’t wait to start my placemats! 😊
Love our tutorial step by step easy to follow you great job thank you, just subscribed to your channel . Love to may homemade great for gifts thanks again, beautiful placemates
Hi Nell, love your placemats they are beautiful and the fabric is so cute, I don't know if we have that fabric in Canada. I will have to go and look. Thank you for this tutorial. Happy sewing and stay safe.
Such a fun tutorial Nell! I too love homemade and the few imperfections just add character to the piece. I’m super excited to get out and shop for supplies to make my family of 8 a set as well! Thanks again. Be well and be blessed! Ana
i guess Im randomly asking but does anyone know a tool to log back into an instagram account? I somehow lost the password. I would love any assistance you can give me.
@Judah Angelo Thanks so much for your reply. I found the site on google and I'm trying it out atm. Seems to take quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
Thank you Nell!! This was a wonderful tutorial for me since I have never done quilting before and want to start. Great step by step details and repetition so I can absorb and understand each step as you go. I bought my jelly rolls and other supplies so I can’t wait to begin.
I have been purchasing Walmart fabric for a while now. The prices are incredibly great. The quality of everything I have bought there is amazing. My only problem is I have to travel a bit because the Walmart nearest me doesn't sell fabric anymore. I always find the colors and combinations that I'm looking for. I'm not one to push Walmart but definitely go there for fabric.
Thank you! I managed to get a roll of the Halloween and the LAST roll Xmas from my local store :) Looking forward you being crafty once I get a few more supplies!
Love this video, You are truly a good teacher. I am new to sewing and these are the kinds of things I want to learn on. Your advice, not to buy the high end fabric, check it out on Walmart product. Good job. Thank you, Mary
Thx Nell for taking the time to film this tutorial I'm always looking for quick projects ..the placements are so cute...will definitely be making some would be really nice gifts as well -:)))
o neil god bless your heart, your tutorial is most explicit and educational, you are a lovely being, God and the Virgin bless you and yours beautiful family
So, this is going to possibly sound bad, but from me a night shift worker it is 100% positive. Thank you for such a relaxing video, today I could not sleep and needed a quiet relaxing video that would keep me interested but help me rest and I got to enjoy crafting while I listened, I am a talk to me sleep lady and this video was amazing I consider it crafty ASMR adding it to my tutorial list AND my relaxing videos list. These placemats are amazing!!
Haha thanks girl! I've been told my voice is soothing before, but I have a hard time believing it. I'm too upbeat, lol! But I'm glad it relaxed you and gave you some peace. :)
Hi, I know this thread is several months old but I have to comment. I am not a night worker, just an old lady with a lot on her mind. I also sometimes fall asleep to FlossTube. I have a handful of soothing voice, calm ladies that I like to watch when my mind will not stop and I fall asleep. Nell is definitely one of them. I always re-watch eventually so I can enjoy her videos. And finally, I am making these placemats for Xmas gifts. Thanks Nell and peaceful sleep Mae!!
Hi Nell. Such a great tutorial. You rock! I would suggest picking up a package of quilter’s pins. They look similar to safety pins but are slightly bent to make it easier to pin your quilt sandwich. Would it be possible to add the backing onto the sandwich at the beginning so you are essentially quilting all three layers at the same time?
Probably! I would definitely recommend a walking foot though...that's a lot of loose layers to be trying to sew together. Part of why I did the top first before adding the bottom was to minimize slipping. But, if you pinned everything together really well and/or used a walking foot, you could probably get away with it!
This was the best tutorial on this type of project I have seen! Thanks, Nell! You have a much better Walmart for craft supplies than I do. If I remember correctly, you are left handed? As I read other comments, that may be why you have the fabric to the right of the needle? No matter, you did a superb job and you have inspired me to try some for Christmas! Thanks!
@@LittleYellowHouseCrafts You did a fantastic sewing job along with the tutorial! I just thought you may have been more comfortable the way you did it! No right or wrong way as long as you get the job done!
