Don't miss this ‪@nextleveloz‬ episode if you are looking for Lap stopover options with a difference between Melbourne, Adelaide, the Great Ocean Road, Mt Gambier, Victor Harbour and the Fleurieu Peninsula. Don't forget 100% of our RU-vid ad revenue goes to charity.
Naracoorte Caves is a surprise package and we loved the little National Park campground, which is ideal for a two to 3 day stay and a couple more hours up the road is McLaren Vale.
If you like your wine McLarenvale has plenty to offer, and if you want some other attractions it got a few of those as well.
This week we do a special "treat " activity for us - and we visit the "Cube" and what might be Australia's weirdest winery! We also visit two of the caves at Naracoorte and give you an overview of the neat little campground there.
The campground is a little tiny bit expensive, but the campground is well equipped, powered sites and great, clean and tidy amenities.
In between we have a few nights at Adelaide to get the Defender serviced - where do we stay in the big smoke? The Adelaide Showgrounds were great and well located. A bit exxy but suited us to a tee.
Welcome to Episode 50 of our Big Lap Gap Year. We're David and Paula ‪@nextleveloz‬ . Like many of you, we've worked hard for 40 years, but we are too young to retire. So we're taking a gap year from work, we've bought our first ever caravan and are doing a Big Lap around Australia taking in the iconic destinations of our fabulous country.
This channel is for fun and to share our trip of a lifetime and 100% of any ad revenue earned goes to charity.
We'd love your comments, questions and tips. We hope you will like and subscribe and share the videos with others as we look forward to sharing our journey around this magnificent country.

G’day g’day. That Fairy Wren - we think it is a Superb Fairy Wren, but we aren’t expert bird watchers, was pretty bold. He bounced around us for ages. Good to know that Paula isn’t alone on talking to all the animals

Thanks for watching. It is an amazing adventure and wonderful country. That area is pretty easy of course but plenty to do and always nice to go and have some wines or something in between! All the best.

I spent some time in this area back in 1985, I was working at the F1 in Adelaide, a working holiday job, you have prompted me to get back.. thanks

There was more to look at around those areas than we thought. Most Lap vids skip this area but if people are looking for some stops on that southern coast route between Melbourne and Adelaide these are a couple of good options.

The F1 in Adelaide was so good. I went to the first few, and the last one in 1995. 🏎️ 💥 💨

Glad you enjoyed it. You do need to have these treats and something a bit different in between all the adventure stuff, off reading and free camps. And you don’t really see too much covered in that region. All the best.

Enjoyed revisiting places we took the kids to years ago, plus the grandkids. What apps/ books do you use for your info on the out of way camp sites?

Hi thanks for watching. These were really enjoyable stopovers for us, so glad they brought back memories. We mostly use Wikicamps. We have hard copy HEMA Atlas - which we do use for route planning rather than camp info and I can't remember the last time we opened the Camps12 book. There a few places where you can tuck in out of the way if you are between locations, but generally we find wiki camps very good. All the best and thanks again.

Great video I hope Solitaire were good to deal with regarding the Defender service. With what u guys r doing, I’d presume you’d be getting the car serviced every 6 months. You’d definitely want it up on a hoist and things thoroughly inspected etc, considering the harsh roads u r often driving on. Best to carry a spare air filter amongst your spares etc, and regularly give the fitted air filter a shake etc, to clear it out a bit. Good wineries in the Coonawarra region, near Naracoorte… The cliffhanger at the end, must be to do with Paula when she got ill. Happy New Year. 👍

Solitaire were OK, they got us in. They didn’t want to check a serious rattle we had and told us it wasn’t mechanical - and proved to be very wrong!! So expensive oil change and brake and other check over were good but as you will see I had to do a field repair and we identified something that impacted our high country trip. We carry a spare air filter in addition to two changes on the trip. We have roughly halved the service interval so we did two on the Lap. Good wineries in the Coonawarra, Wrattonbully and McLaren Vale. We have done a few but for this stop we had a few great option but decided to just do d”Arenberg and they blending experience was fun and interesting. The Cube is eclectic to say the least. The ending - nup, Paula’s emergency visit was in addition? so something left field. 😉

@@nextleveloz Very poor that Solitaire did not want to investigate the bad rattle ! The vehicle is under warranty ! I’d complain to JLR about that. I know u didn’t buy it from them, but, that does not matter. A lot of LR product will be driven interstate etc, so dealers should be used to accommodate out of towners, on a road trip etc ! Did u buy the 5 year Service Plan, these r great value ? But I suppose it doesn’t cover additional services that r needed for vehicles being used off road & overlanding etc… The hourly Labour Rate at Solitaire, would be much lower then LR Dealers in Melbourne & Sydney… 👍
@nextleveloz
@nextleveloz 6 месяцев назад
@@StephenFogarty2023 We couldn’t see the value in the service plan when we bought , noting we weren’t really thinking about bringing the service schedule so far forward. Don’t matter now though. The bigger question is whether the dealer network is offering good value and appears quite hit and miss from looking at the various forums. And that doesn’t only apply to JLR. But for a relatively new model car you might expect a few issues to get identified - but that requires the system to be right on top of them. I have held off the car update until we get the 2wd issue resolved and will look at all those issues and the responses as a whole package.
@matthewallen5399
@matthewallen5399 6 месяцев назад
Hard to explain but your 2wd issue may be caused by the extra weight from your 18 inch light truck extra ply tyres causing the math the electronics has to do when your wheels spin to not compute correctly.
@nextleveloz
@nextleveloz 6 месяцев назад
@@matthewallen5399 It was occurring when 20 inch stocks were still on it. Thanks for the thought. It doesn’t appear to occur to others with non standard tyres either.🤔

Just wondering do you service the car as per log book or do more frequent oil changes?
@nextleveloz
@nextleveloz 6 месяцев назад
Hi Ian, More regularly. Towing and off-road and i think the log book cycle is too long even noting that modern synthetic oils are better. Aiming at around 15,000km. Bit overdue for the next one (on that reduced cycle) but we’re waiting for some repair parts and will get it done when the repairs are being done. cheers

@@peterbullen3347 That’s bad enough, but in the scheme of the impacts around the place that sounds manageable. We had not long got back to SEQ so were able to race a portable fridge , power station and spare fridge battery down to our daughter along with our jetboil stoves and they were able to juggle recharges until their power came back. all the best.
