This video is like sitting on the back porch with your uncle in the late summer and listening to his advice while nursing a delicious drink he's made you, quietly nodding along as you get buzzed. It feels very nice.
Yeah when someone hires you to permalance, and then tells you when to come to work, and that you need to be in the office, that’s illegal (on the boss, not you)
"I often [shwa] think: »God damn it!« while lying in bed: »If I was a real go geter, I'd get out of bed right now and go back to work.« I don't think that's healthy." It's not. But that reminds me of stories of some Latinos & Latinas I follow.
@@caligo7918 it’s illegal in the U.S. too, highly exploitive. Good luck doing anything about it though- you’d just lose your job. You’re not going to get enough money out of it to be worth losing the gig.
@@caligo7918 Wait. I can’t possibly be right, but that sure looks like “self-standy-hood” as the German term for “freelancing.” Man I love our fellow Germanic languages haha
I’m not really sure the new desk cam adds much of substance, but it makes me chuckle and makes it look like Greg’s shooting an 80s rap video, so on balance it gets the thumbs up from me.
i went through a "quit your job and move" episode about 2 years ago. had spent 6 years working my way up at a grocery store, made it all the way up to managment. woke up one day and realized i hated it. now im a car mechanic. its harder work, but i actually enjoy it and find the reward in it.
I haven’t been a subscriber for your whole career, but I have gone back and watched from the beginning, and I gotta say you seem MUCH happier and centered and alive nowadays. I’m happy to help support that with my Adsense views!
I related to a lot of this. I was a freelance copywriter/editor until 2018 and remember the day rate calculations and anxiety and chasing invoices and many of the things you talk about - certainly I've written plenty of things nobody will never read! I hope you make it to life in Key West one day, Greg. And in the meantime it's just about late enough in the UK that I can make a frozen margarita and toast your future success.
I did quit my job and moved to Key West for a job. It was a fun few years, but when I have friends in Manhattan paying less rent psf than me, I realized I wasn't long for it.
Though I'd imagine much like in California, you don't need as many square feet because you spend a lot more time outside, right? Since you don't have that pesky winter to deal with, they can just stack more and more people in!
I don't tend to engage with youtube videos enough (liking or commenting), but I wanted to express how much I enjoyed this episode. I've enjoyed your content for a few years now and I love episodes like thia where you just talk on subjects or events you have an invested interest in (this, fallout, when you get into a drinks history, etc). Having said that, I'll always click on, watch, and enjoy any HTD video to comes out. Keep doing what you're doing. Love from Australia.
I spent a decade climbing the management ladder. Had a great, solid job but was never happy. Went from salaried leadership to part time bartending. My mental health has been much better, I work less, and I make more. I’m in a union job and make silly drinks for people and experience the excitement they get when they get a drink that blows them away. I don’t have to rely on the success of other people to dictate my success in my job. My ceiling is based on my skill. You’ve done wonders to help me open up, explore flavors, and find ways to make my guests happy. Thanks!
It's weird the things that prompt us to change our lives like that! Looking back, I'm pretty sure it was watching the first season of Severance that led me to switching jobs, moving across the state, completely uprooting my life. Who knows what will happen when the second season comes out 😂
As someone who literally decided to change everything about their life this summer while also unemployed (and trying to change careers)... this was very comforting. Thanks, Greg.
Love the Greg lore drop! I used to work for a video agency as a permalancer myself, 30 hrs a week while also working 20 hrs weekly at Starbucks at the same time. Destroyed my sleep schedule and melted my brain, but we had savings for when the pandemic hit and I was on the first wave of people to get fired for ‘lack of client work’. I will say the company culture was great while I was there, my manager tried really hard to include us in company meetings because he used to be an editor himself. I still fondly remember we had afternoon group yoga sessions to keep up from getting carpal tunnel. Those savings helped me and my husband start our own web design business so I’d say it all worked out in the end.
I guess anything but Margaritaville and 5 O'Clock Somewhere (and maybe Come Monday) qualifies for most folks, but as a lifelong diehard parrothead, I feel weird seeing any song that was included on BBB&B referred to as "super-obscure"
I'm with you, man! Was a freelance videographer for 20 years and needed to make a change so I open a BBQ supply store. Hopefully the Keys are in the future for both of us. Cheers!
This wasn't the video I was expecting, but insanely interesting and really nice to hear you talk about all of it so well. I'm also a video editor, younger career wise as I graduated from University in 2019. As you could imagine trying to find any work freelance or otherwise during the pandemic was a fucking nightmare. I was losing hope, would have settled for something like permalancing if it ever presented itself but I'm so blessed I found the position it did. In June 2022 after 3 years straight of painful searching, I got a permanent position editing for another channel on this platform - a gaming one as well. Quite literally my dream job. I always assumed it'd be far out of reach but it actually happened. If anyone is going through that struggling phase of trying to find a position they actually want to be in, keep searching, it might take a while but you will end up where you want to be with enough time and effort!
I love this type of content! It really cements the fact that we are all the same out here just trying our best to make things work. Keep doing what you are doing, Greg!
I just gotta say that as someone who’s been watching HTD for a while now and feel like Greg is an old friend that I get to catch up with and have a drink, these little peak behind the curtain episodes about your life and how you ended up in this position you’re in are extremely fascinating. Cheers, Greg! Now if you’ll excuse I’m gonna go make a margarita.
now I have a name for the kind of work I do! thanks Greg! :D perma-lance web dev here. The "discount" on my hourly rate is made up for by a monthly retainer. No retainer, no discount. and thank you for sharing. Honestly feels good someone understands the game. Glad you found something better :) cheers
I'm a freak who exclusively uses the Subscriptions page. I never miss an episode of the shows I like and I don't have to deal with algorithmic shenanigans
I really enjoy these story time videos. Paired with making a drink, it feels super cozy. Keep 'em coming man, long time subscriber, and as much as I enjoy all of your content, I think this kind is the most enjoyable I've watched! :)
Greg, this is the best HTD episode I’ve seen. As much as I’m entertained by your various concoctions, your personal story is more interesting and inspiring. Key West is a concept, not reality (ask Hemingway). Anyway, keep up your excellent work. You’re an inspiration to grinders everywhere!
I’m not quitting my job, but your channel inspired me to create my own channel despite the fact that your super production skills makes me think all I record and edit myself sucks… all the best Greg!
Wow! Thanks for sharing . I was a non-union freelance editor in Los Angeles from 2009-2020 so these stories really hit home for me. Discovered the world of pre-vis a few years ago and have been having a (full-time) blast!
Really appreciate you sharing this tale! Good midlife crisis currently happening & going back to school for graphic design to get into a creative field- finally!
If you are absolutely serious, I'd suggest Key Largo over Key West. Prices are a little better, you're closer to amenities, and it doesn't smell as bad.
Happy to hear your story Greg. It's empowering to see people make the leap. I am happy for you and I am happy i get to view your content. Picked up bartending as a hobby because of you and now it's my fallback if things get really crazy in life. I love doing it, so thank you for giving me passion
I needed this. You have a ridiculous work ethic, if I had the ability to get going I know I could take over the world... figuratively. Be proud of everything you have built.
Pro Tip: Bookmarking your YT Subscription page instead of the Home page bypasses the algorithm and guarantees that you see every new episode of the channels you're subscribed to.
I want more content that's not fully related to drinking. Your usual content is great as a years-long viewer, but I really love this. (Also as a freelancer, you're spot-on.)
That was wholesome ❤ i wish you can move to keywest at some point although i don't know how it is but it seems fancy 😂 i'm not from the us. This was a cool format too, i'm sure people who watch you will like seeing more like this
I quit my job and moved to Key West back in 2017. I was working at a customer service place living with my folks while applying for grad school and hated every minute of it. I worked summers in the Keys on boats in between college (a gig I'd highly recommend if you can do it) and some friends who stayed down there got a place and needed another roommate and reached out to me. I sent in my applications, quit my job, and drove down to Key West a week later. Within two weeks I was working on boats again and tending bar on sunset cruises. I did not love my place, don't miss the 12 hour work days, and could not get good health insurance down there but the tradeoffs were worth it, there's a cool community of people down there just trying to figure out their lives and it was a great experience I'd highly recommend if the opportunity presents itself.
I got fired at the start of '23, I'd been steadily hating that job for a while, the pay was good, but the stress wasn't. Then I started looking for something I actually wanted to do, people called me crazy, less pay, no experience, but I held on, and here I am, finally doing something I enjoy
Greg, I teach audio production in the film department at UH Manoa. I would very much like to show this episode to my students next semester, since you talk about the pitfalls of freelancing in the entertainment industry in a really informative and entertaining way. Thank you for this episode.
Was trying to get my measurements down for a frozen margarita down last night (what perfect timing lol) Cant wait to try this recipe out!! Been a fan of the show for years. Becasue of you I've expanded my knowledge of all kidns of cocktails and you've inspired me to try and experiment making all kinds of incantations!
Its always fascinating to me hearing you touch on your past freelance life/work, I'm a graphic designer and that chaotic uncertainty that you dealt with is something I resonate with.
Went to Key West several times in the 60s and 70s when I was little and fuel was cheap for dads Cherokee piper. It's really just the island version of your city park. Fun. But not Plava Laguna, lol.
Loved the episode theme, great idea. Kinda finding myself at the start of that whole "Can I actually afford to live?" phase of being an older young adult. Felt nice to hear your thoughts on my drive home. I like your whole youtube/twitch so I hope you get to do more and do it well. If you would indulge a lowly random dude like me; What did you mean by "I did a bunch of stuff that you've probably never seen"? Like, did you mean it was for in-house boardroom meetings/brainstorming and it went to the cutting room floor? Or was it like, private stuff for sheik Steve from Idaho who wanted to make a birthday present for his 3rd uncle about some niche thing regarding the Alamo?
This actually hits close to home as I just got fired from my job with really no gain in skills or prospects or savings...it's surprisingly comforting to know someone else had this similar situation (although I don't have a child).
hey greg! id love to see you do a video on how salt is used in cocktails! obviously a salt rim on a margarita is the most commonly known but it could be interesting i think to go into more depths
You and your family would probably really like Madison, WI. Its quiet, clean, and I think y'all would fit with the lifestyle. The cold weather sucks though.
@@howtodrink So do most Wisconsinites, it's ironic. This is what we do, in the warm months of June to Sept/Oct, we absorb as much energy from the sun that we can, but being smart folks, we understood that sunlight can't just be absorbed, it must be stored in a medium, and that medium is alcohol. We drink as much as we do because the alcohol in our bloodstream is able to act as a carrier for the sun's energy, and if our BAP gets too low all that stored sun will escape and we will be depressed like the people from Minnesota.
I read that when the frozen margarita machine was invented, the recipe changed to use sugar instead of simple syrup and that somehow helped it work better.
Love the Secret Side Cam, and Storytime Greg. I feel like the most drastic change I ever made was switching from ICU nursing to OB nursing after almost 10 years. It certainly felt like starting my whole career over again, but at least I was still getting paid the same. I certainly don’t like the feeling of living paycheck to paycheck.
blenders are great. one of my favorite cheats is a blender hollandaise. not a crutch but a great tool to have in your bag of tricks. props for having the balls to go for broke and taking the dive! gig work is crazy.
We've been going to Key West at least once a year since about 2013. It's a great place, and during the Pandemic when my wife and I were both working remote, we almost moved to Key West. It was actually affordable before and during the Pandemic. Now it is entirely unaffordable for average people. Don't move to Key West now though. It'll be underwater in 20 years, so go now while you can.
I did not expect the career advice but it's very much appreciated. Currently freelancing 2 engineering jobs and I'm definitely still on the side of "If you want more of my time you have to pay more" If/when I do eventually go through that transition I hope there's an actual full time job and not "permalance"
In 2021, hubby and I took our summer vacation and realized it was the first time we had been really happy since quarantine. We knew for our daughter’s sake that we needed to make changes. So we quit our jobs with great benefits, moved 500 miles away without securing employment first, and had the hardest year of our lives. I’m so glad we did. It was a very stupid move and absolutely the right one.
Greg, I'm another Greg who just realized you probably cut me out of a ton of Tough Mudder footage over the years. I've got a ton of headbands over my bar at home. I'm glad you quit your job and ended up creating something for yourself.
I hear that but, it's kinda hard to think of Key West as being part of Florida. Actually the state legislature attempted to revoke the town charter a couple years back.
Look at the plus side, the style of our government and size of the nation allows for states to have such distinct character that people of varied political backgrounds can find a place to thrive. Better than having the entire nation ruled like CA, or Texas, NY, or Wisconsin. Each state has lovely attributes but wouldn't want the entire nation to resemble them completely. As far as heat, humidity, costs, and insurance though, I wouldn't want to live in Florida either. It gets to 90 with high humidity here in WI and I want to die, I can't imagine turning that up to 11 and trying to exist, especially with my job. On a side note, can you imagine it the entire US resembled Wisconsin? Can you imagine the rampant national alcoholism, or the horror of EVERYONE putting 7up or Squirt in every Old Fashioned? Horrors upon horrors.
