I started at vlog 1 about 4 months ago or so when I took his filmmaking & storytelling course in February 2022 and I'm here at vlog 78 so far. Really cool progression through his early journey.
CaseyNeistat Don't you agree that the most maddening part of Canon's 'Movie recording stopped automatically' error is that it'll never tell you why it crapped out ? Ok camera, you stopped but please tell me why you stopped even if it's just because you're a DSLR and you're programmed to stop after 20 mins to allow your OEM to avoid EU camcorder tax. *Sigh* www.tested.com/tech/photography/44445-why-digital-cameras-have-a-30-minute-video-recording-limit/
Matthew Tasker I found that it was the card rate causing the problems for me. My not be the same thing for you, but when I upgraded to a 90mbs card it never happened again.
Matthew Tasker Yep looks like his problem is something different. But as for me, a new card cleared it up. Maybe that will help someone else's problem as well.
I am literally at the lowest point right now. Never felt so exhausted and useless and shitty like today. I could seriously just rip out all my hair and scream like a psycho. So the 11 minute casey neistat video just makes my whole day ! Thank you so much. Feeling so much more calm and better now.
CaseyNeistat no every 'vlog' is uplifting. seriously i am kind of living off these movies :D i just went for a loooooong powerful run, it helps me every time, just putting all my energy into my feet and run till i am exhausted as fuck and sweaty. all over
Marlon is a wise man; He knows his limits when it comes to Casey's toys. Candice is a wise lady; She has given in to watching these most excellent vlogs. Casey is a wise dude; Because, well, we all know why. We've been here for 78 days.
wise: having or showing experience, knowledge, and good judgment. How has he NOT had the experience, knowledge and good judgement to get him to the point he's at today?
Friedrich Nietzsche He explained in another comment that the camera was unfixable. Yeah, someone who is at the top of their field would be considered wise. Absolutely.
Friedrich Nietzsche I usually don't respond to trolls. But, TCT was quoting the definition of "wise". By that definition, though definitely subjective, I would say Casey definitely falls under "wise". Again, "wise" is subjective so there is little point in arguing whether someone is "wise" or not, but I think most could classify Casey as wise. He's obviously smarter than you because he does better things with his time than troll RU-vid comments.
sai co Casey is the type of guy who keeps everything, so he definitely had camera body that had been unintentionally broken laying around. He’s also not the type to waste money; so he most likely smashed an already broken camera, and returned/traded in the “malfunctioning” one to get money toward the one he purchased as its replacement.
Everyones going on about how he smashed the camera, but what i care about more is the film he was talking about in the end that he hasn't finished yet. Wow, Casey I really hope one day i get to see that film, it sounds absolutely incredible
Casey, It is so amazing what you guys did for those soldiers in Afghanistan. My big brother is in the Army and I just know how much those guys probably appreciated you guys literally going out there to support them. It must've been such a huge moral boost for that squad and its just really cool that you guys did that.
No offense Casey but I have a hard time understanding why you don't troubleshoot with your cameras, I got the exact same error on my t5i, a quick 1 min Google search and it was working again.
HOW TO FIX MOVIE STOPPED RECORDING Okay heres the deal with the Canon "Movie Stopped Recording Automatically". This isn't the cameras fault it is the speed of the card. So yes a class 10 card is what Canon recommends for the camera BUT class 10 isn't the only thing. So those numbers on the front of the SD card like "45mbps" means that the card can READ data (not right) at a maximum of 45mbps the card. The card WRITES data slower than it reads so it falls well below the maximum speed of 45mbps (maybe like 20-30). Now the camera Casey and many of us use write data 40mbps and higher so when its sending this much data to the card it can't write it down fast enough and basically says to the camera "Stop I can't do it". Thus recording is stopped. Google *name of your camera here* mbps and you will find out what it is. Then when you buy an SD card make sure to look at the write speed on the back NOT the read speed. If it is over your cameras mbps this will never happen again. The reason it works sometimes is because bit rates vary sometimes depending on what is happening in the frame.
8thWeekday Hate to break it to you, but your camera requires 40 megaBITS per second at 1080p, that is 5 megaBYTES.. caseys card can write at 60 megaBYTES (480 megaBITS) per second, 12x what is required...
intranix My bad on the typo! Anyways let me explain. Transcend can write a max of 60MBps but it can't sustain that. We can use Casey's Mark III for an example. So that camera shoots at 92mbps the card is 6x faster at peak speed. However since the card can't sustain that speed without getting too hot causing more problems it drops down lets say it drops down to half so 30MBps now it's less than 3X as fast but still it can do the job. However, say the card gets too hot quickly or there is a corrupted file or something on it that messes it up (which happens a lot). This drops the speed of the card dramatically lets say it goes to 8MBps which is now slower than the information from the Canon. However, Canon tries to solve that problem. In order to help the card out Canon will store the data that can't be written into its buffer since the card can write speeds technically 6x faster it won't be a problem so the Canon just dumps all the rest of the data out quickly and the card handles it no problem. However, cards like transcend don't hover too high maybe 15MBps-20MBps so now the Canon is trying to push all the data off it's buffer while it loads more into it, so it is writing more data to the card than the card can manage because it is trying to catch up. The camera is still technically delivering 92mbps but the catch up time from the buffer and the slow card make it technically faster. This is why the numbers matter and SanDisk wins here, SanDisk hovers much closer to the speed they advertise. So when SanDisk says your writing speed is ~45MBps they mean it is just about there and an error might make it drop to 30MBps when transcend says it they say we can get up to ~60MBps but in reality they probably however much lower from 15-30MBps without any errors. Anyways I hope that cleared it up thanks for showing me the typo though because my post didn't make sense with the typo.
Hey +8thweekday, I have a question, you seem to know a lot about sd cards. I just bought a canon 600d I have only experienced this problem once though (just today actually). I think i have a pretty good micro sd card from samsung it's class 10 but i am using an sd card adapter to put it in from a not known dutch company. Can this adapter slow down the speed of the micro sd? I so do you recommend me getting a normal sd card? Kind regards
8thWeekday I use that exact card to shoot on my gh4 all the time at 200mbps, no problems, the reason why Canon cameras stop recording sometimes is their software, it only records to a maximum of 4 gigs, then stops. If you get magic lantern firmware you can make it keep recording (while losing one frame). Or you can just buy a real video camera... like a gh4, a7s, etc. If it's messing up before that (which sometimes they do) it's probably because the internals in their cameras are ancient.
***** If you look at it frame-by-frame you can see he did not destroy the lens. The frame before he hit the camera you can see the lens and camera were moved an no longer attached and the time he 'smashes' the lens the lens just dissapears before the axe hits the floor. imgur.com/a/IIt4P
this was one of my fav. vlogs. -seeing how CanDICE (gangster name) actually watches your vlogs and enjoys them. -Honesty of creative struggle and how it's ongoing and paired with perfectionism and in this case honoring friends/vets. props Casey! BIG fan
Finished all my home work, brushed my teeth got in my bed, went on youtube searchd casey, and the video was uploaded 23 seconds ago, my life is complete, hahah
Eric Timmer I'm quite sure Canon will send him a new camera to apologize. That's how it works when you're famous and you have the ability to influence thousand of people on brands choise (Casey just made a really negative publicity of Canon) :)
Could be the SD card but also the software writing the file. I had a similar problem with a GoPro that I had to return. Either way I like the SMASH!! LOL
Caost Exactly... It's going to be interesting to see how this pans out.. Casey has a immense social media following and his viewers are an ardent bunch. Casey just axing the bloody camera is him sending a strong message to Canon through his followers!!!
Oh man, I've thrown away so much footage just from not having the space to hang onto it all. UGH.... What drives/storage are you using for all your footage?
From experience, the type of SD card and speed affects the camera. Try Sandisk Extreme pro SD cards and you should be good. It stopped having the same problem when I did that.
Giulio Sciorio I have used both Canons and the GH series. I have a GH3 but use my GH2 more for video because it is cheaper if something bad happens and the quality per dollar is great. I carry the Canon 70D because the photo quality is better and video is good as well, although not as good as my GH3.
Not sure if he'll ever read these comments but it would be great if Casey did an edit on the soldiers years after they've served and how they are doing now. How have their tattoos aged and if they have them covered up or does it mean the same to them now as when they got it? Just to see how their perspectives have changed and not just the family life or hobbies they typically show on these 'where are they now' updates. As always great stuff, these are just the greatest short movies ever. I feel humbled to see this type of film making evolve as they are released. I don't meant to sound ostentatious but if Andy Warhol had access to making a vlog like this or hunter thompson or even The Beatles back in March 1957; I think their fans would feel they are on the same journey as we are on with Casey. As a fan it's great to see this perspective he displays to us on the philosophies of making yourself successful with the knowledge and life experiences he can share. If the greatest impact Casey ends up having on the world are these inspiring and uplifting vlogs he posts, I think that will be the greatest educational work any one human being could provide the world with today. Which to me is funny ironic it comes from a 10th grade drop out :)
Instead of destroying it, a better vlog footage would be you going outside your office and handing the camera to the first person you see and say have a good day
I wouldn't do that. It's like handing the keys of a car that a complete lemon to someone random. Even though it may seem like the right thing to do, if the device is failing it shouldn't be dealt with by anyone
I like to disagree. You need to know when to quit. You just can't hold on to something forever and waste time and energy behind something which doesn't seem to be much of worth. "Focusing is about saying no" - Steve Jobs.
agreeing with the disagree: gotta know when to cut bait permanently: "this is ultimately a bad idea, a rathole...." versus temporarily: "the timing is not right; am going to shelf this for a while" i do hope CN sees that afghanistan film to completion though. Casey, if it helps: have read that George Lucas was never satisfied with the original StarWars. he finally had to let the imperfect go to completion or he'd never finish.
My Canon camera used to do this until I got an SD card with a write speed of 95 MB/s. It's shutting off cause your SD card is too slow. Get a higher speed SD card and you won't be axing any more cameras (even tho that looked hella fun) lol.
katyapoloni Get a high end point and shoot, I got a Canon Powershot S110 for $100 used and it's great. Shot my latest vlog on it. Doesn't need to have all the bells and whistles to look a million bucks (although it does help)
OriginalPatters How long does the battery last though... Im not sure if that was the one I was looking at but I avoided it because of the shitty battery life. I use a random sony from years ago but it does the job
Not that great. you'll be lucky to shoot an hour's footage on it, however it's so much lighter than an SLR so you can carry it everywhere. My latest youtube video wouldn't have been made if I didn't have my point and shoot with me at the time
Casey I just want to say, without being preachy I'll do my best but, I support you with everything your doing and I take in a lot of the advice you give out and your a true inspiration. Its just moments when I see you destroy things without a care. That camera you smashed was really unnecessary because that's now just some wasted material and money. I know what people will reply, they will tell me that its not wasting my money and I should stop complaining but I just feel that you could have done something better with the camera like recycles the parts to make one of your awesome Casey inventions.
***** yes but you see this goes against a lot about what Casey says, I don't believe that he is looking for views. What he does is make films for entertainment. I will admit tho what hing him destroy the camera with an axe was entertaining but then I thought like a boring person would and thought about the weight of action. Bet you'd be surprised that I'm a 12 year old...
Graphikal I Free Graphics, Gaming & More! He finished the daily vlog series. Just like any other tv show, they arent meant to go on forever. Also, if you want to argue that he quit vlogging, you may want to check his channel right now.
I know which camera he has, the canon 70d... But he was saying my new camera... So I thought he changed... And when I checked the footage it's like the quality was different... So he's still filming with the 70D ?
***** I've had the opposite experience. My Sandisks have literally fallen apart for no reason, but my transcends have been going strong with no failures since I bought them over a year ago. And I've recorded 100's of hours on them, so they definitely get used.
Casey, you need to upgrade your SD card, that's the reason you keep getting an error. The Sandisk Extreme Pro will handle it. Just because your SD card is class 10 doesn't mean it will handle the encoding. Like so Casey can see!
It's simple really, and it's a easy fix. You need to use a SDXC Card with these new DSLR cameras. Class 10 95mb/s preferably. Problem solve the camera will not stop recording. *Transcend memory cards are not reliable.* *Buy Sandisk Memory Cards*
MR JONHATTAN Its not the card..,.. its the sensor overheating. None of these cams are designed for long recording and the sensor heats up and degrades. Its a known issue with these and having spoke to Canon techs at photo shows directly that is the problem.
Shopping at my local Hunt's, i learned that the switch to the top of the line Scan so improved my captures. I use Auto most of the time, since i'm a creative for whom Photography is just one skill, so these cards worked perfect. I was able to use the .mov function on my Nikon this past winter to film snowstorms at night ( only way to get really great contrast), and the card performed really well with the camera.
GearBoxVideo It's absolutely not that. The indicator on the right side of the screen shows the card's buffer - if it fills up/the bars go all the way up, the camera stops recording to avoid dropping frames. It IS the card.
i have to say i'm not a fan of destroying cameras, or anything. it doesn't solve anything. better to learn what's wrong than destroy a perfectly good camera. but millions of views,, right?
Rozelyn Roux The Canon T3i is actually only capable of recording 10 minutes of video. It's just one of the problems that you can't get rid of unless you buy a different camera (as long as it's not Canon).
Actually, I've recorded over ten minutes on my t3i? The "stopped recording" error only appeared for me when I used a cheap memory card. It would film a few seconds, and the error would appear. With a better memory card there's no problem for me :)
Rozelyn Roux Careful where you buy your class 10 memory cards though, I bought one from ebay and it barely lasts 5 seconds before stopping recording. I use another SD card which is a class 6 and it gets a good 10 minutes or so before it cuts out, probably because I use a T3i not because of the card.
Max Đỗ sorry to hear that. capturing spontaneity by definition is super super hard to do and when your equipment is the weakest link it's just infuriating
***** I really hate the attitude of "We are making an app, but just for iPhone" and then doing android as an after though. Casey, if you read this androids design language has really picked up in the last year and you can make an app that looks incredible if you do it right. www.google.com/design/spec/material-design/introduction.html
kit dalby seems like a pretty baseless guess lol. It's best practice to make apps for both platforms. Based on the limited market size of making an app just for iphone I would say its more likely for android and ios.
I understand that they are likely to make an Android app, But the problem is that lots of these people that make apps for both seem to make an app for iOS and then copy all of that design over to android which does not have the same design language at all. I see this as very likely considering that the company seems to be made up of 90% apple products lol.
Ever Morning Candic watchs yesterdays vlog in bed. so tomorrow she will watch a vlog of her watching a vlog :D so if you film her again tomorrow she will watch a vlog of her watching a vlog of her watching a vlog to be continued ;)
I'm pretty sure the camera stopping is by design. I read somewhere that it has to do with taxation and grouping of photo cameras vs camcorders. Manufacturers put a set time limit on video recording so their photo cameras are considered "photo" cameras and get taxed different. If they didn't they'd have to submit them to camcorder regulations/taxation - something along those lines. Has nothing to do with memory cards. If I'm not mistaken canons will stop recording after 15 or 30 continuous minutes.
My Canon 60D does the same thing. It can do it as many as 10 times in a few minutes some times. Does my freakin head in! The new camera looks good! Let's hope it doesn't experience death by axe as well ;)
CookingwithKarma Karma i'd buy a new memory card, a high speed one with plenty of space. Casey was wrong to think it was the camera, as much as I love him.
CookingwithKarma Nothing wrong with the camera. Canon camera's are the optimal DSLR brand for shooting video. This was a problem of ignorance and stupidity, not the manufacturer. He could have done a 2-minute Google search to find the source of the problem, instead, through a lack of anger management, he decided to destroy hundreds of dollars of gear that had absolutely nothing to do with the problem.
CookingwithKarma ***** --Yehh, most likely a glitched SD Kard. Allot say "High Speed" but not all are equal in that area. I've had that problem and needed to buy another my self. 1st one was from Radio Shack.. ended up ordering another one that was much better.
Loved this vlog Casey! Also just quick word on vlogging equipment I thought I'd send your way. I had the Sony rx100iii too but same with you the autofocus was too slow. Just got the new Samsung NX500 and I'm incredibly happy with it. Fastest autofocus ever. Flip up screen. Shoots in 4k. And the built in mic is two port stereo. And the size of it is in between point and shoot and a DSLR. Absolutely love it. Only thing is the codec shoots in 265 so have to change on every import but I use handbrake for workflow and relatively fast and painless to get it to 264.
I know you have enough money to buy every camera you want, but seriously, smashing this one with an axe is not cool, you could have tried to fix it or maybe give it to someone who needs to work a month to afford it. (no offense or anything)
Don't TELL me to tell Canon to take a flying f%*k....I just bought a 70D...and found your channel on a search for tutorials for that camera....sorry...I have too much $ invested to take a sledge to the new rig....love your channel, man....sorry that you're paring it down from the daily's....but I applaud the need to create anew....and further your goals. All the best to you, Casey...you inspire!!
butcherneck ***** Ha, me too! Canon used to be good, but now they just suck. Auto-stop recording is just unacceptable. Switch to anything else and you'll probably be better off..
Ehh maybe next time a camera malfunctions just set it aside, call me up, and I'll come pick it up. It's a huge inconvenience for me but I guess I could take your defective equipment off your hands...
If your company concerns mean goodbye to your Daily vlogs, just know that they came as a welcome distraction if not a motivator for me to do more. Thank you CaseyNeistat!
still love the vlogs and it made for a good shot but smashing the camera comes off a little like..."i got so much money I can just smash this expensove camera and go out and immediately buy another one bacause that's how I roll" which is a tad bit off-putting.
kab4292 the camera is nearly 2 years old, it no longer functions properly - it was inhibiting my ability to work. it had to go. sacrificing it in the vlog is the only way it's legacy will live on.
