I just recently turned 30, and are doing the same thing you are. I am finishing my degree, we stopped putting off making videos for RU-vid, we've started the preparations for moving to Japan like we have always dreamed. Something clicked when I turned 30. It was as if I just woke up one morning and suddenly felt as if enough was enough. Don't get me wrong, I'm not suddenly super woman, it's more like, I found my desire again. lol I'm so happy for you (and your new hubby)! We wish you all the best.

Quitting my job (or, more specifically, switching fields) has always been a unnerving thought in the back of my mind. I consider my work stressful yet rewarding, but like you said, I would only consider myself content. Sometimes, when I have time to think, I just sit back and think, _am I really going to be doing this for the rest of my life?_ But the prospect of finding something else to do is also terrifying. So with that in mind, congrats on facing the uncertainty you might be feeling and pursuing your goals despite that. Hope to see further success in the future. :)

Congrats 👏 I applaud your bravery! When I turned 30 I knew I needed a change,my husband and I had been trying to conceive for 2 years and it wasn't going well. I took time off from work to focus on distressing and everyone thought I was mad...Well I'm currently a month away from my due date and don't regret a thing(work will always be there)! Fallow your ❤,you know you best! Good luck on all life's endeavors! Hope you feel healthy soon!

I just changed my job. I was basically a social worker in the state for Developmental Disabilities Administration. I worked there for 6 years and then got burnt out because of my new boss. I switched my focus a bit and am much less stressed but still in the same field. Change is so hard for me. I love how your videos always have advice or a positive message. Its very refreshing especially in this RU-vid age of drama channels.

I had my quarter-life crisis just as I was graduating high school. I had become the go to person for filmmaking and photography to the point where I was the head of the academy at school and was already doing freelance work. Thing is, I had always wanted to pursue music, but had gotten so caught up with the video work that I unknowingly pushed it aside. That kinda pushed my depression over the edge and I spiraled out for a while. Pulled myself out of all projects and finished school way less involved than I usually was. In the year after I ran into some health issues and a health scare with my hearing which ended up messing me up even more. I’m coming up on 4 years after and for the most part I was just floating around between random jobs trying to figure shit out. I’m in a better place mentally and I’ve figured out a plan that I’m working on now but there’s still a part of me that’s thinking “you’ve wasted too much time, it won’t happen” or “what if you’re going down the wrong path”. Being in a world where everywhere you look people seemingly have their shit together by the time they turn 18 and are already successful, it feels like being 21 and not having built a career already just means Im not gonna do it.

I turn 61 early in March, and I can tell you that even though there are definitely physical changes that can get in the way as you age, "old" is about 50% your physical age and 50% your attitude. 30 is a good gateway age for "real" adulthood and thus a good time for changes -- but any time a change is made to improve lifestyle, improve health, improve finances, or just to avoid stagnation (and/or any combination thereof) you're keeping yourself younger. More power to you, girl! You've got the drive you need to succeed despite the difficulties... there will be bumps in the road, but you'll get there (even as the chosen "there" changes over the years). :-)

I'm also in my late 20s and can relate so much to how you're feeling. I've been at my full-time job for 5 years now, but have been so stagnant, I thought I was happy being just comfortable but what I really wanted was to grow and do something more with my life. So happy to hear you're taking action on the change you want in your life ❤️❤️ Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feelings Kelly. Wish you all the best!

Best of luck on your new job ventures. I think it’s great that you are taking the steps to follow your dreams and your passions! I just wanted to clarify something though, especially to people who are teachers looking to teach in Japan. I also have a teaching degree, a valid California credential and teaching experience in the US. Depending on your experience and your credentials/licenses, you can get great teaching jobs which give you the bonuses, promotions and professional recognition that someone in the field of education coming from a different country might be seeking. Competition is tough and golden opportunities sometimes happen through timing and networking. But for those who are interested in pursuing a teaching career here in Japan complete with health insurance, benefits, pension, raises/bonuses and good working conditions, etc., they do exist and it is possible!! 🤗Once again, enjoy your new job and the opportunities that are waiting for you as you take this exciting step forward.

Keep sharing your maturity and humanity...you'll go far in your endeavours 😊

Lol I taught one year in Japan- was my turning 30 crisis goal. Completed March and now I'm focusing on my writing and business. It's been a side thing for 8 years but I have committed to a deeper level and I am excited. Every day, though, I have to deal with my own emotions. It's so true--this path forces you to go through all that healing every single day. I get up, dance as therapy or do tapping, and so on. That's what I usually need to do to really be creative and not freaked out. Much love, you're on track

I love your channel, and you are so motivational. I’ve always wanted to live in other countries and Japan is my number one choice, but I was so behind in life that I thought it wouldn’t happen for ages. I finally figured out what I needed though, and even though I’m years later than planned, I know what I need to do. I have a two year plan to get me to my dream college which happens to be in Japan. I’m really nervous because I’ll have just turned 25 by then and will be much older than my Japanese class mates, but I can’t let that deter me from my happiness. I can do this and watching your videos help remind me of that!!!

Even if you quit you are still a teacher. Your slife of life vblog not only points out benefits but problems you would encounter if you try to live in Japan. The travel you do shows the beauty and culture of Japan you show how a normal person adjusted to living in Japan and it's not like what is in anime. Most importantly you taught me no matter what is getting you down, persevere and sooner or later you will succeed and find your happiness. As you shown from not only fighting your sickness and going from someone just random trying anything to overcome it to making a plan to overcome, from going from as a loveless person to someone who seems to be making up for it with your husband. And now moving from the safety of being a teacher and starting a new life. Wishing you success in this.

What's crazy Kelly is that you ARE really good at RU-vid. Like you are extremely talented at making videos. They're always really well done and the quality is great, you can tell you put heart into every video. The problem isn't that you aren't good at it but that you aren't loud & annoying enough to be a billion-view RU-vidr haha. As much as I've loved YT since it began when I was in High School, it's changed and the most popular Videos aren't heartfelt, artistic ones like yours and others I love. With all that said though, I don't think it's all that reliable like you said, since trends change SO rapidly and you can't just be yourself and be successful forever on YT. And girl I'm SO proud and inspired to see you chasing your passion out there in the real world. I see more and more women being brave enough to do this and they're rising to the top and being beacons of hope for other women. So you do it, take the leap, work as hard as you can, and you will do it, no doubts.

Ahh.. you totally get teaching life! I taught English in Japan a looong time ago, but it's definitely different from being an elementary teacher in a self-contained classroom in the US. As far as raises in the US schools (at least in my state), we have steps (years) and columns (degrees & units) that move along. Good luck with your new job!

Congratulations Kelly on making this decision which requires great thought, courage, and confidence. It seems like your next chapter is to use your channel to help people transition to Japan - you have been fantastic and I know you will be even more creative, interesting, and useful. Perhaps you've already thought of this, but my suggestion is to not just think about your next chapter, but also think of the chapter or chapters after - does the upcoming job open many other possibilities that could interest you or satisfy a long-term plan? If indeed this is the case - go for it (as you are doing). Over the years, there may be so many others having similar channels helping people transition to Japan that that this segment might become too competitive or boring. Maybe there will be the Kelly Network that have numerous channels produced by others who become part of your "network" with a Japan angle covering many different topics. Or something completely different on your own. Life (and the future) is full of changes as you know - stepping stones. Good Luck!

I feel you on the bad gut thing! I had major stomach issues and did a whole bunch of scans and a doctor told me I might be gluten intolerant, which was a little odd for me to hear because my HIDA scan showed I had a high gallbladder function and typically gluten intolerance is a low gallbladder function... fast forward to me being gluten free, spicy food free, no alcohol, barely any caffeine, no sparkling beverages (I did all the latter after gluten free because my stomach still hurt and I felt sick all the time eating any of those foods outside of also being gluten free). I went to the doctor for a check up (different doctor than the one who told me to go gluten free) and she told me I need my gallbladder removed! She said everything will go back to normal and I won’t have gut issues anymore (or at least not as severe as I’ve had them). And best of all, I don’t actually have any food allergies! It’s just my gallbladder working against my body that’s making digesting foods really difficult for me. It’s hard have health issues and not getting a clear answer and feeling like you’re hitting a wall. I wish you the best on continuing your health journey and can’t wait for you to be healed! I know that feeling of being on the last race, it’s going to be awesome to not feel sick anymore!

Teaching was my ticket to this country but not my main reason for moving here and now that I have been doing it for three years I have a lot of doubts because it doesn't feel sustainable long term. It's such a rewarding job but, similar to Japan, there aren't a lot of opportunities to earn raises or 'move up' as a teacher. I am happy for you and excited to see what comes next in your videos.

And after the stop period they just go back to the same job and apply again. On the other hand in Taiwan for example the mentality is just working until you die. There is no passion and no distraction (it is all about work). I am not sure about Japanese working culture but i think is similar.

Teaching is one of the most difficult jobs out there even before you consider adjusting to a new country or any subsequent health issues that may result. Both countries I taught in I was just thrown into the deep end and was expected to figure it out while regularly getting sick. It can be frustrating at times but there's a lot of good stuff to take away from it even if it isn't the career you want in the long run.

Going through almost the same thing! I live in Nara and I just quit my teaching job in December! I was teaching for over three years. I also loved teaching, but my health didn’t agree with my job. So I’m on a spousal visa and I’m trying to find what I want to do now. My husband has been so patient as I try to figure myself out. Hahaha.

It’s good that you are moving onto bigger and better things. Teaching is great but there is only so far you can get here with that and you have a lot of ambition and drive in other things.

its your life chase your dreams! I'm looking to do something similar, as in leave my current job for my dream job. I've been terrified, self-doubting on whether I am good enough to leave my current job and pursue my passion, which is photography, and my husband has been very supportive! I haven't gotten to leave my job yet but I am on the right path. Thank you for what you do and i look forward to seeing where you go!

In the states we have teacher shortage because teachers are quitting. In Chicago are they are school where they have to hire from China because they couldn’t find teachers locally. It’s on RU-vid.

im 32, wanna use teaching as the stepping stone but i want to learn the language so i can progress outside of teaching. did your jobs have resources to learn japanese or are there any companies that focus on teaching expats the language that are affordable? whats the best way to grasp the language quickly as a foreigner? any hint on the type of work you're transitioning into? dont have to mention location or name of company just like "it field" or "hospitality field"

I'm still confused about what it is you're going to be doing but that's ok..... I wish I could work in Japan,... but I'm soon to be 59 and I believe they don't give out working Visas for that age group.... plus I don't have a uni degree to fall back on 😢 I'm so sad for that

My friend does NOT have a university degree. He is a native English speaker and was hired on by a Japanese company to teach English after school as a tutor. That can sustain you enough money so you can try living in Japan to see whether you enjoy it enough to continue. There are many companies specializing in tutoring. Look into them and see. After all, what harm can that do? Good Luck!

I would be super interested to see a "day in the life of a Salary Man" video from Ryuji's point of view. I think there are a lot of stereotypes that surround salary men/women and I'd love to se what's true and what's false.
