Famous quote by Rudyard Kipling: “The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. To be your own man is hard business. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.”

Well done! I myself live in a small one bedroom cottage up in the mountains on about 4.5 acres of land in the south west of Ireland. Like you, I do my best to be self-sufficient. I think if you have the 4 key elements: a water source to drink from, land to grow food on, a shelter to protect you and a renewable heat source....then everything else in life is secondary. Keep up the good work.

@@danielleclair1360 I drilled a new well on my property and the water is tested. If you have an existing well on your property but it hasn't been used for a long time, I'd recommend having it tested just in case. The location of an existing well should give you an idea of the water quality. For example, if the well is located near a boundary with your neighbours field and that neighbour spreads cow dung on his/her land, it could contaminate the source. Also, if the well is near any septic tank. So no harm in having it tested for peace of mind.

I retired and left a big urban city for the rural country side a few years ago and it was the best decision of my life. Personally, I found living in a urban surrounded by millions a very lonely place and a extremely stressful environment.

Thank you for taking the time to update us. I just found your videos about a week ago so doesn't feel so long for me.😊. I found the fact that people are telling you not to have children because of your life choice a curious thing. I raised 3 fine men in a rural situation, home schooled them to boot and they are very well rounded individuals. I found that with a little effort you can make sure they have friends and culture. I have been using permaculture on my three Acer's, here in Michigan, for the past 10 years and I am 61 now and a female. So again blowing away allot of the naysayers about women and this way of life. I believe a return to simpler ways of living is making a strong showing, if my children and their wives and my nieces and nephews are any indication. So inspired by you and the youth today!

I think you have the kind of nature to fit into rural Irish life.Yes it is not Outer Mongolia..in fact I am sure you have been surprised by how fast gossip travels !It is great to have the mobile phone and internet access.As noted that was not the case 10years ago.My husband was reared on the bog and has so much knowledge and many skills which will just be lost and that is why it is refreshing to see someone like yourself taking an intrest in the land and restoring the cottage with such realistic expectations.We restored a cottage to habitable standards in East Galway but cant get anyone to live in it and not let the fire go out.As for children.."they are the sons and daughters of lives longing for itself"..hence emigration.My husband was reared in a 2roomed mudwall,thatched cottage with 8siblings.More resourceful and healthier family you never met

New to your channel, so firstly, welcome to Ireland. I was raised in a small cottage on 12 acres of land in Donegal and my father grew all our vegetables organically with horse manure (fantastic fertiliser but you need to let it break down for a while before using it) we kept chickens, ducks, geese etc. And lived off the land as much as possible. I couldn’t have asked for a better childhood. A small greenhouse or poly tunnel would serve you well, we were never short of tomatoes, strawberries, gooseberries, rhubarb, even grapes. And all our own herbs. I wish you every success, it’s a truly rewarding way to live.

Love your thoughtful, kind and clear manner. I spend a lot of days happily alone with my horses, dogs and cats on our small farm in rural TN-US. Unfortunately the neighbors moved in very close by and enjoy gunfire, wood smoke and idling fumes, so my peace and privacy is broken. Politics and religious extremes make this area not feel like my home in the west.

Just some sage advice from one introvert to another. If you need to recharge after social interactions then think hard about children. There is no down time, there is no recharge and it is very draining emotionally. Children are a joy and a blessing, don’t get me wrong, but I have been tired for the last 10 years. My husband and I have purchased our own Mossy Bottom in Australia but just can’t take the leap to move there. Being a bit older than you and weighed down by all the social trappings it’s a harder move to make. Be happy and fulfil your purpose ❤️

You really are living my dream. We're a little landlocked due to being needed anytime with disabled relatives, plus my wife and I have had many holidays and big expenses in the past which means we literally have no savings. We rent, and I'm desperately stuck in the "work to live" cycle, putting in 45-50 hour weeks as a disillusioned nurse. I compensate by being frugal, minimalistic and environmental, but even though I'm very happy I feel I'm not living the lifestyle I should be. Sometimes circumstances can't allow this, but it still gets to me from time to time. I really love your videos and I'm so glad I've found your channel. Really confused that folks would tell you not to have kids. I am quite the introvert, I have been doing permaculture with bees, chickens, ducks, and orchard, etc etc for 20 years. I have four children. I cannot imagine living this life WITHOUT kids. Children bring energy, ingenuity, fresh perspective, and purpose. They have only enriched my experience of living a simple life, even if it is more to juggle to live with six people in our house (and two standard poodles) instead of one. Thanks for sharing your journey, and if you want a family in the future, I hope you can reach that goal. It's absolutely worth it, and such a good way to live a simple life.

Do you have a local library,pub or shops,these are places of local contact and people in Ireland like to chat so it’s a way to make friends.Also look up theatre groups they enjoy people getting involved with them either front of house or behind the scene and the more people involved the bigger the productions,and it’s all at a local level.As far as having children that’s up to you,I had 6 (1 step son and 5 girls) and I can tell you with your life experiences you would be a great dad and could teach your children so much about life and being self sufficient you should always keep that door open,what the world lacks is good fathers who stay and teach their children how to really be good human beings

Brilliant. I live in a big town on the South Coast and I may as well be on the moon. Isolated doesn't even come close to how I feel here. Do your neighbours look after the animals if you do visit your folks? The sustainability of some of your energy and food sounds great. What do you think of ground source heat pumps? How do you deal with the competition for what you're growing? I cannot kill slugs and snails and bugs so I gave up on trying to grow veg. I get a fair amount of fruit from my Magic Wild Garden,. As for the scarf, I lived in a "shortlife" in Brixton for 22 years and, effectively, it had no heating! It was freezing cold in the winter. Does the fan on your log burner push the heat around effectively? My log burners could be a better. I realised that you get more heat if they aren't tucked into the chimney breast space.

Hi, have just come across your videos and love them. It was sad to hear about your crop going like that, but have you heard of Canning(American) bottling in UK I started a couple of years ago when my favorite fruit started to go up in price! after a couple of goes you get the hang of it, and at the same time it warms up the place. If you have a glut of stuff it is good for those winters months. You can also do veggies, but need a proper canner pressure cooker for this, however, the machine, (used on top of a stove) costs, but if you knock that cost on the head and see what you save through preserving the excess crop, it is well worth the money. the big plus is that if you ever get stuck you have a reserve and a dark moment can become very light. Well, don't want to make you feel your not doing it right. Am off to watch your duck video, a very belated Happy New Year to you and your dog, Mossy and hope that this year has brought you much more than you anticipated. Watcher in Brighton, East Sussex

I watched a grand design of a guy who had lived in a forest for 10 years and then got permission to build in the forest who subsequently found a wife and had kids. He was an articulate guy, like yourself. Kids are a double-edged sword though and they take a lot of sacrifices. I've seen people raise them perfectly well in yurts and all sorts of living arrangements so that is beside the point.

Inspiring as always. On money, i wonder do you have a little nest egg growing to help with renovations/cover any emergencies? I completely agree that it's better to stack shelves than to be trapped in a cubicle for 40 to 50 hours a week. You have your autonomy and that is priceless :-) Madeleine

I love seeing the before a home and after pictures or better yet a video with every detail of how it is now! If you had a tripod we could all see how you are restoring your old cottage! Maybe you could make your own tripod out of wood in your forest! I know it’s hard to share your actual work with us without the some type of gadget. Some people upgrade so maybe you could get a hand me down one on the cheap or just shipping costs from one of your subscribers? I love your way of living and I think you learn a lot more about sustainability than someone who is too busy making a living in the big cities. But many of your generation are going back to the basics. But I have seen people do much work in where they live. Many of my own family live out in desert with solar and a battery bank. And a way to have lights off of batteries which I would prefer myself if I were in a different situation. I am looking forward to watching your next video. Have a wonderful New Year and I wish you much success with your plans for this year. I like your choice of courses you are taking at college too.

hi there!! thanks for continuing to share your journey. trees!!! looking forward to that video. You have a dog so you are not alone! I have to wear a scarf in the house even in San Francisco, CA winters bc kinda damp and a little chilly unless really crank up the heat. congrats on owning your little cottage in Ireland!! I really want to live out in the countryside as well... or in tropical region.. two very different options but my desire is to live simply and connected to nature in every way possible. very inspiring!!!! people are strange commenting to you about not having children.. like you said you are not in the absolute middle of nowhere. people have kids in all sorts of circumstances. but it's not even on the short term horizon for you it sounds so why are folks even commenting:) I'm not sure I could be be a volunteer but I'd like to learn more. thanks!

I love my 4 children and 8 grandchildren. They love to camp in the summer and we give each other great joy. 47 years of marriage has been a joy, thrill and at times very difficult. I could never imagine a life without them all. I hope you find a wife and children ,as it can really be the making of a man.

What a wonderful video again! I love watching you, it's like watching myself in the past and hopefully in the future again. Well... a male version anyway. I can relate to a lot you talk about. I do have a daughter and would love life to be like that for her, apart from for myself. I think the simple life is just perfect for children, certainly up to a certain age.

Modern technology helps (young) people, Deb Fryer. I wish that I had it when I was young. Kids immobilised by coronavirus have school timetables and information available at their fingertips nowadays. That was not an option when I was young. If coronavirus had closed schools in my time, it meant losing education and falling behind, with no chance of catching up, as Internet did not exist and libraries were closed.

You know, people get sick in any environment. I can say that in my experience getting sick in the city and dealing with the struggle of work and rent is far worse than living on a homestead. Especially because it's less common for neighbours to pitch in when there is a crisis like that.

Hi Mossy, welcome to Ireland. I was wondering if you were on the dole?
@helenaville5939
@helenaville5939 5 лет назад
Good question. Perhaps he does not know that in Ireland the State pays farmers (regardless of size of their holding) a weekly payment called a "Farm Assist Payment" to bring their income up to the same level as the State Unemployment payment (currently 198 Euros per week). He would also qualify for other means-tested benefits like Fuel Allowance (700 Euros per year), Phone Allowance, Electricity Allowance, free TV licence, free public travel, etc if his income is below a specified limit. As a UK citizen he would automatically qualify for these since Ireland and the UK have a reciprocal arrangement that citizens of both jurisdictions qualify for the same benefits as the citizens of both countries. Hopefully he will read this and research it for himself.

As a (Canadian) mom of 3 - you could totally, happily, wonderfully raise children in the environment you have created. of course you would end up wanting some more indoor space - but no massive house required! You have the internet, so your kids would still be part of the "modern world". Don't ever think you shouldn't raise children there - it's a bit of paradise, they would be sooo lucky. You'll just have to find the right mom! ; )

I live debt-free on a smaller Hawaiian island. I own my own home outright. I do a little bit of Plumbing for people here and there but mostly I work on my own home, go to the gym and swim in the ocean. I haven't had a television for 10 years, no Netflix or Hulu. I just read books and listen to RU-vid videos. The simple life is the best but it can't be lonely. On the smaller Island single women my age are rather rare I Can Only Imagine how it must be in rural Ireland. Let's be honest here, for most men living this lifestyle there's no problem but single women are rare in rural areas, they're all in the cities. And trying to convince a woman to live this lifestyle is a pretty hard sell. This is a mgtow lifestyle.

Thanks for answering questions. I am an American father of three with my oldest who just started at university this fall. Though I yearn for a simpler life, I am committed to getting all three children through school (at an estimated cost of $600,000) Though your life and mine are quite different, I don't find your life as radical as the questions would suggest. Instead I see you as a thoughtful man who is striving to live intentionally. I have much respect for you deciding what is important to you and arranging your life around your priorities. Mass consumption of consumer goods simply has not delivered on the promise to make us happy. So good for you for choosing a different path. Blessings to you on your adventure. Thanks for bringing us along for the ride. Keep the videos coming.

Holy moly Boz, 600,000 dollars?? That’s insane. I’m in a similar situation here in Ireland. I’ve 4 children to get through college, so the rat race continues apace until they are through, but then I’m downsizing the crazy stressful existence, the pandemic has made me reassess big time. Best of Irish ☘️ luck to you big chap.
