With the announcement of Epic Games Unreal Engine Marketplace replacement Fab, perhaps the biggest announcement are the changes to it's Quixel Megascans. It will effectively be going away, merged into Fab... but more importantly it will be 100% FREE until the end of 2024 and assets you "buy" will be yours to keep forever! This is important too, as the pricing are going to change for the worse for Unreal Engine developers!

Sweeney realised he can't compete with Steam on being a 1 stop game distribution platform, so he is attempting to become the "1 stop shop for game asset distribution". A business classic "if you can't corner/monopolize an existing market due to entrenchment then make a "new" market to corner/monopolize". Sweeney wants "FAB" to the the Steam of Game Assets which is a great example of positive centralization as long as it doesn't lead to a bigger pile of asset-flips for the consumer to dig through.

This is not going to go the way they think. I understand the reason why they are making megascans pay to use but the whole reason a large chunk of people switched to using unreal engine was “This engine allows me to make AAA quality visuals for free and I also get a ton of free 3D models for free with megascans” If you make people pay for something they got for free in the past they will leave and not use your engine.

I'm not sure people will leave, but it definitely removes a huge incentive to using Unreal over other engines. It's a shame as I found Epic's stance on buying up developer related companies and offering their content for free if used within the engine to be a wonderful and smart method to entice developers to the platform, something I wished Unity would have done (e.g. with speedtree ). I guess if they are starting to charge for the content now though that maybe those good times are over.

Epic doesn't make money from smaller devs and indies, dude. Unreal is used in tons of AAA studios and virtual production. Those studios aren't leaving because megascans are now paid...

Make your own assets, using free stuff in production seems shortsighted, sure for roughing things out, insignificant things, or super small projects, many free assets is fine, but a full for-profit game, not really. With your own assets, all are optimized, color matched, & explicitly appropriate to your needs, this way the assets belong to your project alone & are truly unique, then you have copyright & all that good profitable stuff too.

Mike, there is something way more important here: Epic have just rugpulled EVERYONE using the “Free Megascans with UE” option. That option won’t exist going forward. They have also 3x the price of assets compared to the point system. All in all, this is bad news. Do not be distracted by the brief free period.

@@red4666I thought royalties from people selling their unreal games is what paid for the development of unreal and megascans outside of the money they were raking in from fortnite. Guess that money is drying up. The reason people are mad is because unreal engine was being advertised as the free game engine anyone can use to make AAA visuals at home for free and megascans was a free asset content library for unreal engine users. Imagine going to your local library and then they ask you to pay to read a book, that isn’t a library, that’s a store and epic games altered the deal because they think people will pay rather than the alternative which is leave and use a different engine.

That was what I was thinking too. Surely this will be a pretty big c*ck block for those who want Unreal for free. Maybe some more who'll switch to Godot, even if that's hardly the same scope as Unreal of course, but especially single & small devs nowadays will think twice about their engine choices after news like this or what happened with Unity.

@@red4666 The point isn't that I would expect them to continue doing this sort of thing. The issue is in the communication. They claimed that Megascans would be free for Unreal users. People have started projects where they now depend on these assets and tools. And now, without prior warning, they're taking that away. And no, it wasn't free lunch, since you pay a royalty on Unreal, and are restricted to using the assets with Unreal. A product isn't a free lunch if you pay for it.

They're not really free are they? I though Epic pays for them to the creator out of the overall profit pool? Probably a tax write-off for Epic too, I doubt they'd dump such a useful marketing tool, chances are if you get a free asset from a creator & like it, you'd be more willing to look at their other offerings. Its known as a win/win so its likely to stay, even if evolved over time.

The way it's worded in the announcement makes me think that the thing one should do is actually wait for Fab to launch and then "buy" all the Quixel assets on Fab before the end of 2024, rather than doing it now on Quixel. Getting them on Fab will give you universal licences not limited to Unreal (whereas on Quixel, I think it's the same old UE-only licence, at leas that's what the wording implies) and it also sounds like they'll be ending Bridge support at some point in the future and they don't actually say that Quixel assets purchased via Bridge/the Quixel website will convert to Fab licences for those same assets. Maybe they will but the fact that they haven't explicitly mentioned it makes me think they won't.

@@gamefromscratch But in the video you tell people to head over to the Quixel website and get everything and based on the wording in the announcement, I'm not sure that that will actually end up giving you the perpetual, universal licence that the announcement talks about. I think that only applies when you "purchase" them through Fab.

It's not about the title, it's about you telling people to go claim stuff on Quixel today when the announcement says to claim it on Fab once it launches. You didn't read carefully and lots of people are now potentially wasting their time claiming (downloading) stuff on Quixel.

@@gamefromscratch I think what people are saying here is correct. We need to wait for Fab to launch and then get the assets there by the end of the year. In the video you say to go over to Quixel and start acquiring everything which is going to confuse people. It might be worth re-uploading a new video or at least put some annotation correcting it. I'm sure some people are going to go there now and just start downloading masses of assets.

Mike... It specifically states that you must acquire the Megascans through FAB, which hasn't even launched yet. This is to create the migration of users to FAB. So don't waste yours and people's time saying to go acquire everything.

Pretty sure he means _when_ FAB launches NEXT month, get everything that is Quixel on FAB because it will be free for the rest of the year then startin 2025 it will be paid content.

From a recent auto email from Quixel: Any Megascans content that you got for free via Unreal Engine can be downloaded anew from Fab. All Megascans will be free until the end of 2024 under Fab’s Standard License.

It's to get you registered at FAB since you need ot use FAB for it, that's your exchange. Also if you want more assets which will fit the quality in the future they will be available at FAB store but no longer free. It's still pretty nice if you can actually get the quixel stuff until the end of the year after they release FAB.

I'm just so-so on Quixel stuff, it's ok. I've already picked through it and downloaded about a TB of textures & materials, and the meshes? I don't really care much about them I don't have a use for them. The selection already is stale, they haven't added much since they launched it. But I do need more drive space. But that just a fact of life developing in Unreal Engine, everything it does takes a lot of space. I try to remind myself I really only need 1k max for 99% of uses. 4k & 8k textures eat hard drives like hors d'oeuvres.

That's the beauty of hoarding software. If the software existed on physical paper, would probably fill up multiple garages/basements. But since is digital could fit it all on a single computer/box of storage devices/disk case.

Thank you for the heads up! This is pretty awesome, just wanted to add a few things. Fab officially launches mid-October and will offer multi-platform support including Unreal and Unity, with more engines to come, as well as support for tools like Blender, Maya, Cinema 4d, and Adobe Substance 3d. They are going to have full integration with Unreal so you can access assets without having to leave the editor. Also, AI transparency- they will allow creators to be able to control whether their assets can be used to train generative AI programs and will require sellers to clearly state whether their assets were created with the help of generative AI or not. Plus, they will give their assurance that Epic will not use people's content to train generative AI programs. I really hope they add support for Godot, that would be great! Again, thanks for the info.

Looks like this is going to be the final nail in the coffin for *Quixel Mixer* . A lot of people were excited about its free Megascans integration with Unreal Engine, but now *Adobe* and *Unity* must be thrilled. *Substance Painter* will stay on top, not that Mixer was much of a threat anyway

You can't make something free for your users, then go back and charge them for what was previously free. Bunch of bs in my opinion. What a massive scummy move, coming from epic this is highly disappointing. I have looked up to Epic because of how much they help the community, but this? Come on man. Like sure, if they want to start charging for megascans thats fine. But they should do that for any NEW assets they add. The whole library as it is should remain free. Wtf

@@gamefromscratch correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm wondering if it's in anyone's interest to have thousands of people using automated scripts to mass download stuff from their resource site. Surely this will crash the site, and epic will change the rules of the game, to stop people doing this. But anyway, thanks very much for this Mike, this is very interesting and helpful. I would love to pick up a few nice pbr textures for my blender work.

That's unfortunate, I am not a graphic designer and Quixel helped me make realistic looking environments quickly and easily. The ease of bringing in realistic environment assets in UE was one reason I moved over to it. This is NOT a good move, especially for small game developers that are programming focused, used UE for the Quixel addon.

Honestly I'm more suprised they didn't do it sooner. The whole stuff is done at masive losses. Training people to be cheapskases isn't good. They end up devaluating the product/people who made the work and become entitled thinking the services for free forever. Developers need to get paid for their stuff at the end of the day. I've seen the reation on dev twitter and the comments really are pretty bad.

There is a difference from creating a new account versus using the EPIC account? In the website shows 3 License as free, but when login with our epic account the License is the Unreal Unlimited.

It says “you can use it forever” that is not the same as saying “you can use it for free forever”. For that reason I think it may prove to be a waste of time acquiring the whole library.

Not an automation script but you can click on the little download button on each item in the browse section, then allow your browser to keep blocking the downloads.

In the new store, you will have two licenses when purchasing assets, personal and professional, each with a price. Everything we get for free before the end of 2024 will be ours, but only as a personal license, no longer professional or commercial.

Havent used megascans in a bit, by "claim" "purchase" "aquire" them- do you mean when you select a megascan (mesh/texture) select it's resolution (1k-8k) then download?

I think I will make my own stuff, megascans was "fun" to use but honestly was always a bit of a hassle and very limited even if they had thousands of stuff, try to make a plate of food with it and you will see why I call it limited. Also this is an account migration tactic if they add a "get everything free button" I will jump if not I will pass I guess.

Still on team Unity, but some UE users sure seem to find ways to complain about HOW they get their free stuff. I guess it's just a positive for me, but then again I don't really care for hyperrealistic styles in games.

Epic offering megascans free to UE users was always an anti-competitive move, though Epic ending the free lunch in service of taking over the asset marketplace market share isn't great.

Yes, and maybe. Will have to see how Quixel assets end up being licensed. Right now Unreal provided content directly from Epic is UE only, but Quixel shouldn't be like that.

I would probably avoid using a script because the automated requests sent to their server are going to get you either banned from their service, or block your IP. It is safer to just dedicate a weekend to acquired them manually.

Nah, it's fairly straightforward to reset your IP address. The risk is minimal at best.

Holy shit the entitlement in the comment section is insane. You guys complain about Epic Games all day, in any context you can. Remember that they've showered you guys with assets and work worth millions upon millions of US dollars for free when you crawl back to Unity or Godot reusing the same assets, both of which have inferior tools.
