I noticed that when you test the microphones you test them similar to how Bandrew from Podcastage tests mics (Getting further away from the mic, playing an instrument etc.) and I honestly wished more reviewers did that because it really shows how each microphone reacts to certain things. Great video btw, loved it!

It's a USB mic of course it's simple. For when you can't carry an XLR setup or you just don't need that stuff - voiceovers, basic recording of instruments. Interesting with the frequency response, I guess with the proximity effect you get the radio announcer sound. The Yeti isn't any better with frequency response, but is different.

In the audio test it was obvious that the Rode NT USB mid-high frequencies were clearer, warmer and more natural then the Yeti. When listeling to the guitar, the Yeti was way too bassy for its muddy high frequencies. I clearly felt that the Yeti is a lesser sound quality product overall.

@@nogocux I've been using the yeti for 4 years now, and I gotta say it does a fantastic job with the exception of mid EQ. I only got the yeti because 4 years ago it was cheaper.

I've been wanting to get the blue yeti for a looong time now, but this video has changed my mind completely and I have to thank you because the rode is exactly what I was looking for in terms of sounds from a microphone ! :D very clear, very sharp, perfectly accentuates the highs and mids without obscuring the lows, while the blue yeti sounded just a bit more "scuffed" in that aspect. Right now the blackout blue yeti and the rode are both at 134 euros so it's an easy choice :P Thanks for the video ! It truly helped me !

I used it for less then a month before the mute button stopped working, and the audio quality turned into a staticy, phone voice. I am returning the yeti to get the rode nt usb. I am switching because I don't know how reliable the blue yeti can be, but the rode nt looks much more reliable.

The Rode definitely sounds better for cardioid recordings, but I like the Yeti for it's price to quality, I think it has a little more bang for buck (in my opinion). Obviously it is more versatile because of the different pickup patterns. But since I only use cardioid, I might get the Rode mic if it becomes cheaper.

I had originally got the blue yeti, returned it and got the rode the difference in quality seems small in the video but in person it was huge I could not get over the way my voice was sounding on the blue, it seemed like it had this high pitch small distortion on the end of each word, and after researching I found it was a common issue, blue also seems to struggle on the customer service side as a company.

Longtime producer/engineer/musician/broadcaster/voiceover artist. No question... even if they were equal in price, the Blue is far more versatile. If you used the polar patterns properly you'd have seen the tone of the mic changes drastically with each, and each is best for different situations.

@PhenomenalCreations 8 лет назад
Hey dude! The yeti does have a gain nob yes, but thats just a physical feature. In every recording software you can change the gain of the mic. Every mic have this, so yes, the Rodes gain is alterable, but in software. So dont worry about that. The Yeti just has it there for convinience! Hope this helped!
@MaxRiley
@MaxRiley 8 лет назад
Hiya buddy, thanks for your reply. So, if I was to use the microphone as well for skype calls (apart from recording music and singing which would be the main purpose of it) would it have a good enough gain to be heard clearly when kept a couple feet away or should I stay very close? Thanks a lot. I appreciate.
@nagol5178
@nagol5178 8 лет назад
That's not true. The gain in the software is not the same thing. The Blue Yeti has a built in Pre amp and when you're turning that gain you're turning the pre amp hotter. Like if you plugged an XLR mic into an interface or microphone pre amp standalone, that is what it's doing, except you don't need an interface for it. The Rode has to have a built in Pre Amp as well or it wouldn't work but I don't see anywhere it's adjustable. If you adjust the gain in recording software that is not adjusting the gain of the pre amp. The pre amp is analog, it goes before the signal hits digital. Then the analog pre amp, rather it be an interface, a standalone, or like the Blue Yeti, converts the analog pre amp into a digital signal. The Blue Yeti Pro has both USB and XLR if you want to use an interface or a tube mic pre amp.

I think the conclusion is: The Rode is a great out the box zero config/editing microphone. The Yeti is a flat microphone so you can shape your sound in editing, this is what makes it versatile. So it depends what you want. Speed of production (Rode) or dynamic application (Blue Yeti). I am going for the Yeti as I have solid audio editing knowledge and i am an idiot for creating more work for myself, otherwise I would take the Rode! Thanks for the video. Great review, testing & guitar playing! Im looking for a Mic & was worried of how bad these mics take up sound from half a metre like you say. Ithink if ill have to go with a USB Mic the Rode NT will take the cake for me, Since it seem to posess alittle better Bass response, but still seem to have this lovely transparency & neutrality :) However i must say it seem when you play that the Yeti has better timbre. As i would use it mostly for talking & tutorials, ithink id pick the Rhode NT. Anyone have any thought on how much more strong volume you would get out of a XLR Mic plugged into an Audio Interface? How big would the differance be? Is it worth it or would you say the a USB Mic is enough keeping it half a metre away?

I wasn't expecting to hear any worthwhile difference between the two, my hearing being pretty much shot these days. Yet the NT-USB came out the clear winner sound wise. Only on the furthest away voice test did I consider them roughly equivalent. Still, because of my hearing I'd settle for the Yeti and save some much needed bucks. At any rate, at my age I doubt I'm destined to be the next RU-vid breakthrough "star." LOL

what mic would you recommend for a podcast like environment but in a conversation setting. Example I have a podcast and I always have a guest on and I want to use one mic in the middle to capture the audio. I know the blue yeti has that knob that changes the way it captures the audio but does the Rhode also capture audio great from the back on the mic or only from the front?

MIKE POOLE the yeti has a Bi-directional setting which picks up audio from both sides of the microphone. I hope I helped.

why would i get the yeti for vocals and podcasts when the rode mic sounds better?
@StylishBuffalo

because they are good for two different things if you prefer the rode for podcasts and podcasts then thats you im speaking for the majority

I have the Rode Nt-usb I love the sound but I don't like that it doesn't have a gain nob. Great video thanks!

The Rode certainly has a fuller and crisper sound on both vocals and guitar. However, the Yeti wasn't that far behind and the fact that it has 4 selectable polar patterns as opposed to the Rode's single pattern is also in the Yeti's favour. It can also record as a single stereo mic, something that the Rode can't do. Both would be a good buy imho, although, I'm swayed towards the Rode.

This "RODE NT-USB" vs "Blue Yeti PRO", Which is better and richer mic 'absorbing' all the levels particularly all the 'colors' of the human SINGING voice?? Thanks for your service.

If you want the best possible quality, I'd go for the RØDE. If you want versatility over quality with a cheaper price, the Yeti might be the mic for you!

Either one would be fine for game voiceovers. Choose what kind of sound you like more. The Rode may have that "radio announcer" kind of sound if you go up close due to more proximity effect. You could apply an EQ to the sound anyway.

If you can, worth spending a little extra budget and go with Blue Yeti Pro (with a Radius II shockmount), as it's 24-bit/192Khz (plus additional XLR option) for extra headroom, compared to standard Blue Yeti's 16-bit/48Khz.
@peoplez129
@peoplez129 7 лет назад
Really not worth it for the average person. The extra Khz makes basically no difference. Even with audiophile headphones, and a DAC/AMP, you'll be hard pressed to tell any difference between a 48khz and 192khz output. Most people won't ever use XLR. It's more of a legacy thing for legacy hardware than anything else.

i have the blue yeti for 1 year now and i have thoroughly investigated my setup but have come to the conlusion that somehow the sound has degraded over time and im not getting results as great as i used to. i think you were too kind to the blue in this video, the rode seems to be a much brighter mic with much more pop and dynamic, seems to have a lot of high end and a cooler brightness. im interested to use the rose nt usb personally now.

I got a Blue Yeti cheap, as part of a trade. It sounds good enough. However, I am getting a Rode NT, the arm, and a sound shield for $ 100 off of Craigslist. I can't wait.

where i am, it's actually cheaper to get the rode microphone. is that a steal or should i go with the yeti?
@BrianJames0964quack
@BrianJames0964quack 7 лет назад
Rhystart yeti, believe it or not is better. It has better features like the gain nob and different settings. Stereo setting and cardioid setting are both amazing, and it has a much warmer, softer, smoother sound that the rode, and picks up much less background sound.
