The build with PS Audio gear must ring ears with all this glass. Sure it's beautiful but have some mercy for the sound. Thanks for the long wall explanation. I would never do this but when one have no choice this makes sens!

The sidewall reflections can do more to destroy image and resolution than any other pair of reflections within your room, even the floor to ceiling reflections. Alway choose more sidwall distance even over chair to rear wall distance.

@@AcousticFields In many cases, when your speakers are on the long wall, your chair/sofa is against the wall. The sound bouncing directly off the wall behind your head can't be good. How does one properly treat the wall behind your head? Your foam technology?
@AcousticFields
@AcousticFields 22 дня назад
@@vinylrules4838 Yes, since the distance from the wall to ears is too small for diffusion.

I had to do that upstairs in the living room while I'm doing the work in the basement. It costs quite a bit for interconnects and speaker wire to keep the space free. It's better than it was.
@daiblaze1396
@daiblaze1396 22 дня назад
DIY interconnects or made them do by someone who knows. Build mine without any prior practice, take a bit of time as anything new, cost is marginal, quality much better. I've cut some cables from renown brands : was amazed about the crap inside. These companies really don't have any respect for their customers. No wonder we are still talking about snake oils.
@AcousticFields
@AcousticFields 21 день назад
Cables are all about noise reduction. Companies use many different approaches to tame middle and high frequency noise.

I'm not so sure about that first picture (it's a bad situation). If he sets up on the long wall that would put his head against the wall (or less than a foot from it.)
@AcousticFields
@AcousticFields 22 дня назад
Its better to trade off sidewall distance for rear wall.

@@Artcore103 You always want to manage the low frequency issues first and foremost in your room. Low frequency fundamentals provide the harmonic distortions upward through 300 hz.. Secondly, you must manage the sidewall reflections for two channel. The first tactic is the distance. from speaker to sidewall. Use 4' as a minimum with 5-6' much better. no matter what the speaker size is. Secondly, you must treat with absorption but no any type of absorption will do. It must have a smooth linear response curve. This is where most treatment types fail. A long wall set up usually has less lower frequency distortions and provides a larger distance for sidewall reflection management. If you chair is against the wall on a long wall set up, so be it. The increase in sound quality is worth the loss of backwall distance..

Dennis, Since my (high efficiency) speakers can use some boundary gain in the mid bass I placed them close to the side wall but with quite some panels around the speaker sides which work down to 80hz. The impulse response is quite clean, only the ceiling is not treated. Will the wall be still detrimental for sharp imaging in my case?
@AcousticFields
@AcousticFields 22 дня назад
Not as sharp as more distance will improve definition.

Hi . I am liking these set up videos . . Regarding a coffee table which I think most people will have . Would covering it help in anyway.. ps I have just changed to the long wall . Currently messing with set up
@AcousticFields
@AcousticFields 22 дня назад
Get rid of it. The reflections from it have a negative impact on vocals and mid range instruments.

so in 39 feet room on 11 feet width you put the speaker on the short 11 feet??? and the speaker will be 30-40cm vs as much as you want in the long 39 feet wall for music?
@AcousticFields
@AcousticFields 22 дня назад
Place your set up on the long wall. Use 21.5' as your center point. Place speakers at equal distance from this center point.

I'm noticing another problem is people are buying speakers that are simply too big for the room size. People need to learn to use speakers for the rooms that are more appropriate, Wouldn't it be better to use speakers that are smaller than too large? The large speakers can't always be placed far enough from the side/front walls.
@AcousticFields
@AcousticFields 22 дня назад
The room only sees energy. It will see all energies in terms of frequency and amplitude. The greater the amplitude, the more exaggerated the modal issues are.There is a certain SPL range that works for your usage and room size.There is a db SPL level that you can also design a new room build for. Most of our listening room new builds are designed for an 85 -- 96 dB SPL range.

Yeah speaker size has nothing to do with room size, other than physically fitting. The room doesn’t care if it’s a small speaker trying to make a 40hz tone or a big 15” woofer doing the same. It’s the same sound wave.
@mcbrion1951
@mcbrion1951 22 дня назад
The speaker size itself is not the issue. If the speaker only reproduces bass down to say, 40 hZ, then the room, in order for the bass wave to propogate completely, needs to be 20' long (that's how long a 40 hZ bass wave is). It's more the frequency than speaker size.
@Oneness100
@Oneness100 22 дня назад
@@mcbrion1951 Dennis can address the woofer size. What I was referring to was more of the cabinet size. Some of those large towers are placed in a somewhat tiny room. Large tower speakers need at least 4ft of space between the front and side walls and the listening position has to be appropriately away from the rear wall. But some of those tower speakers have large, deep cabinets and the rear of the cabinet has to be at least 4ft from the front wall and the sides of the cabinet at least 4ft from the side walls. It's hard to do that, especially in those tiny rooms that are the size of a bed room. You also need space in between each cabinet to get separation. Then, lastly, enough space for the listening position to be also away from the rear wall. Being too close to the rear wall will get a lot of smearing since the reflected energy is almost as much as the direct energy but slightly delayed. I've tested the differences and the RT60 measurements prove how much the listening position matters.

How sad. People spend big bucks on gear but don't understand that speaker ROOM placement and materials within room is just as important if not more.

Its sad that more people are not understanding even proper set up let alone pressure and reflection treatment.
