I bought an 8 foot piece of "cat tarp" to do something like, need to sew loops in the ends for hammock use, or to give more rigid set up than poachers bed. I use one taller tripod, and but the other end of my long side poles into a bank,or up hill of my tripod. Cat tarp comes in 2 widths, but it is expensive. It does come with lots of grommets on the edges, and the edges are pre -sewn, well reinforced and waterproofed. Love your videos, I learn lots from them.
A real winner Dave! ...awesome. You're a cool dude, for sure! Btw, I was very happy with my recent purchase from the PathFinder Store. High quality stuff, thanks!
Keep treckin brother. I appreciate the info that you put out there for free. There are a lot of sources for info, but I tend to trust your channel more than others as most of it makes perfect sense to me. Keep treckin. Thank you for taking the time to help get people up to speed on things that we should have never lost from our knowledge base.
Great idea. We may not say it very often, but thank you for all the time and thought you put into these things. We really appreciate it. God bless. Leon
finally, sooner the better this product is out , ive been using old polyester potatoe sacks this way for a long while now holes in either end and two poles ,it is incredible comfortable.its good to see inovation in products like this ,makes time spent outdoors the little bit easier ,
Like your videos dave! I try to take off a few times every month on my mini bike in the woods here in flordia even if its a night or 2. I have to say I love it my kids love it to and your videos I have 6 kids so camping is affordable lol. I have been on cruises, bush gardens all over but theres nothing like being in the woods with 6 kids talking crazy laughing so hard with tears our best memories are in the woods in michigan and here. But ya just wanted to share that and keep the videos
I just started watching dual survival again, and found out that you do videos online and decided to check them out today, and I love your videos. They are so long and informational. Which is really needed in online survival videos, most of them or short and quick and don't go into full explanation of anything. So I thank you so much for that. I will continue watching.
keep up the great R&D brother. you have a great responsibility having so many fans trust your word on your products. ive never been dissapointed. keep up the great work!
I'm looking forward to see that one in the online shop. Thats a very nice setup. I've never seen that kind of setup before. Thank you very much Dave. Have a great easter. Mads from DK
I think you have a good product here Dave, especially for some of us bigger guys that want a hammock that is going to hold us. I'm 235 lbs and even though I can use most hammocks, this one is defiantly strong enough to last. I don't have the money to buy most of the products you test and demonstrate on here, but it gives me ideas on how to improvise something else to get the same results. Thanks for looking out for us common folk buddy, god bless and take care.
Dave, great idea. I actually bought an old army cot bottom on eBay for $5.00 that I use the same way. The frame was damaged so I just pack the fabric and use a pole at the foot and head to stretch between two trees like a hammock. (I like the frame method you did on this video). I have also inserted a pole on either side and used an old log at the head and foot like you referenced with Kepphart. Your cot is a lot wider than the army cot. Great videos keep the lessons / ideas coming.
Bought 4 of these.... they are great. The Duluth website said 7’ long but that is a raw length. They are shorter when completed. But Duluth was awesome and made 3 special for me at 7’ finished. Thanks Dave for the awesome product. It feels like a cowboy bedroll.
this looks like a fine project to make on a weekend. it would be a fine companion for my wool blanket, however, i can imaagine how heavy this bedroll would be. how heavy is it without the blanket dave?
1, I want one. 2, if Daluth is making it, will it have a lifetime guarantee?3, you left out it's usefulness as a ground cover to sleep on top of so you're not on the ground4, I think this is an amazing product.
I like your design Dave. I'm going to be teaching bushcraft to my kids this summer and I'll be using your ideas there but adapting a simple tarp to the job.
I was just thinking a bout this concept when I looked at a mil style cot cover the other day. Thanks gave me some great Ideas as to how to use it now. Nice stuff you come up with.
Another option would be to have it offset so a 4' and a 3.5' or even a 4.5' and a 3.5' or 4' section for a total width of 7', 8' or 8.5' width and as someone else stated go 7.5' or 8' length. Dave thank you for what you do.
Hey Dave, just a quick observation on the hammock setup. If there were a few grommet holes on either side you could run ropes through them and stake them to the ground to tighten the hammock sideways. Or, you could run a second piece of rope through each channel and stake it to the ground to widen the canvas to make it more comfortable.
Looks very similar to the special stretcher I used in the army in 1989. That one had tubes on the short ends as well for small poles to be lashed for stability
Thanks for the video Dave, I noticed at the end you showed the blanket rolled inside the canvas, but you could see the blanket. I'm sure it was on purpose for displaying only, but if you laid it all out flat, flipped the long sides over the blanket and then rolled it, the blanket would be completely protected by the canvas then. As it is in the video, there's a chance the blanket could get wet or dirty. Love this idea and plan on seeing if I can find a military stretcher to use.
Thanks for sharing, Dave. I just ran across a tarp that's probably 25 years old. It was roped over a pc of spreader , farm equipment in the swamp. It's still solid. Is there any type of conditioner I can use on it to keep it from cracking?
I'm a big dude so the size looks good to me. Maybe even add another 6" to the length. I'm totally stoked for this. Even when I go camping out of my truck I still hate using a tent. I've been looking at hammocks but this looks even better. Can't wait, even if it is a bit pricey I'll likely get one.
Hey Dave whats the weight rating for the Kephart bedroll? and I think leaving it wider will also be better. I have 58" shoulders. Thanks for everything.
Hey Dave! I just got back form work and It's always fun to see your new videos while I drink a little cold one! This helmet cam is very interesting! I hope you will use it more henceforward! Respect, Alex
Dave, I'm 6'4" and 260 lbs, I like the product just wondering if 7' length is long enough, for me I would like to see 7'6", In addition if you do roll this product out, a good wool blanket to go with it might be an option.
Hey Dave, Another great idea from you guys! I was curious where you got your leather hip pouch from? I really like it and have been looking for something similar. Thanks a lot, god bless.
is the product still in development? if so may i suggest adding some grommets to each corner? other than that though it looks like it is very useful and easy to pack up. Any idea when it will be ready for retail or how much it would cost?
I have an old canvas cot that the wood frame broke apart years ago and I have used for years as a kid with two poles but never with a tripod like that, great idea. The canvas I have has an opening in the sleeves about one third and two thirds of the way in, originally for the hinges to fold up the cot, but I can use those to make a type of chair configuration too as well as when in hammock mode I put a spreader in one of them ( about where my elbows are) to give my upper body more room. I ha
Looks solid Dave. Keep it that width I would say, versatility is good! Rolling it up a little for a rasied bed is quick and easy and being that width gives you so much more capability!
That's pretty cool Dave. Looks pretty squared away to me.. Another commenter suggested leaving it as is for some of us bigger guys.. and I agree.. You cal always roll one side up or just have extra room.
Love the idea of the canvas, but am trying to figure out when this would be used over a hammock? Would this be in replacement for a hammock, or is it used when there are no trees? Thanks.
Hey Dave, I love trying new sleeping ideas cant believe I've never thought of this. awesome design. just a idea maybe a some sort of strong Mylar sewed onto one side of it may help with your warmth as a raised bed and as a shelter? But maybe that will make it to expensive? you prob already thought of that. At any rate I wouldn't be complaining if I had one to sleep on or under. Thanks Dave for what you do and your hard ass matter of fact way you do it.
Very smart. Love this product. Dave is that your new PLSK1 that BHK made for you with curly maple handles? from what I saw looks nice. Can you show us a close up of that thing?
I am smaller than Dave...but I turn over one way and another in the night. I believe the Kephardt dimensions would be best for me. I also learned from Dave's heavy mil garbage bag tube bed: I prefer canvas as being breathable. The full-on bushcraft raised bed from logs and saplings takes a lot of wood and a lot of sawing. These ideas save both.
