Ya, I’m not sure I would have ever wanted to hear anyone sing that but Glen Campbell because it’s always been very partial to my heart. I lived in Wichita when I was a kid and was missing someone very much who just couldn’t be around. And Glen Campbell was so special. You know that even after he could no longer speak that he could still sing??? He was still on the line. BUT I HIGHLY APPROVE MICHAEL! LOL. Excellent job; I don’t want to hear anyone else try it though now; I’m good. *Quick note on the song “Brandy”; I’ve had to really think this song out for over four decades, because my grandfather wanted me to be named Brandy and then he died right before I was born. He told my parents, “If it’s a girl, you have to name her Brandy. It’s the most beautiful name in the world.” SO, my name is Brandy. I finally got it and understood what my grandfather meant. Forget the obvious stuff. It might not be as misogynistic as it sounds. Yes, the world is full of that but the song isn’t actually about anything but HER. Not her tragedy or even her choices. It’s about her passion, and her character, integrity, and her distinctly unique BEAUTY that was obvious to everyone around her. She was the one you want to be around. (I mean, come on. Haven’t you ever met a beautiful, intelligent bartender and thought, ‘What the he11 are you doing here??’?) Her eyes could steal a sailor from the sea. She could have had just about anything she wanted, but she is honest, and RESPECTS honesty. She didn’t want anything but him, but accepted that she never would. He was honest with her. The heart wants what it wants. At least he didn’t lie to her. Right? Thank you. I just had to say that because I dig and respect Michael Stipe so much, I just wanted to point out a different perspective.
i learn something new every day...would NEVER have guessed REM would cover THESE tunes. ~but remember~ Campbell recorded Jimmy Webb tunes and only sold 50 million records...i liked these tunes AS A KID...and still do, of course.
William Nelson I remember the song Galveston when I was 9 years old . I always loved that song but it was sad . Later I learned it was about someone fighting in Viet Nam . Someone who was in a situation they didn't want to be in . " As I watch the cannons flashing . I just clean my gun, then I dream of Galveston ."
Eventually Stipe stopped being such an uber-annoying 'alt-rocker' type who looked down his nose on a lot of brilliant music from before R.E.M. cuz it was too commercial and not odd or underground enough like stuff the band considered 'cool' (Wire, Big Star, Patti Smith Group).
If it's possible to be in love with a voice, Michael Stipe's voice is it for me. So smooth, expressive, and sexy. He does a nice job on these songs. I could listen forever.
@@subwaygoddess1 Hi kindred spirit! One of my very favorite songs where I just can't get enough of his voice is "Photograph" with Natalie Merchant. It definitely goes on loop play. But he does sing ANYTHING well, doesn't he? :)
Glenn Campbell played on a lot of hit songs in the 60's . He was a Beach Boy for a little while . I remember the song Galveston when I was 9 years old . I always loved that song but it was a sad song . I didn't know that it was about someone who was fighting in Viet Nam . About someone who was in a situation that they didn't want to be in . " As I watch the cannons flashing , I just clean my gun , then I dream of Galveston ."

Wow! I always loved REM and wanted to be both Michael and Mike because both voices painted a canvas that I could feel. But these clips show just really how good technically Stipe is, it's just amazing! His instrument still profoundly affects me.
believe it or not. Jimmy Barnes does the best Witchita Lineman.. ever.. also Johnny Cash. especially as it is accompanied by an amazing photo montage of the linemen on the job. back in the day. I have not heard the Adrian Paris cover. but I will check it out.
