“My shoes are gone, my life spent”..I have no idea what that means but it brings me to the brink of tears every time I hear it and always will. Just..just ..so difficult to put into words what this song means to me other than i can explain the feeling which is that my heart swells and my senses are heightened to a point where I feel so present that when it ends I just want to replay it.

"My hand’s tired, my heart aches." For sure brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it.

The problem with REM is that it is hard to find what song is the best or the top or the one we like most. It is impossible to do with this great band. As for this song: it is incredibly beautiful! Eternally grateful to REM for the beauty they shared with us.

This song is a prophetic hot air balloon of breathy reality, I've loved it since I heard it, it has been a part of my life.

"My mind is racing -- as it always will" This song is my fav from REM and that line my favorite from the song. A friend of mine said REM's tone felt like "staying home alone on a Saturday night" and I'm inclined to agree but a bit of sad is needed for perspective. Thanks, early 90s REM, for that. We'll ignore Monster and love OOT and A4TP!

R.E.M. music was the OST of my teenager days in the 90s, and only thing I can say (feeling nostalgic, homesick and greatfull) is "thanks u Mills, Berry, Buck and Stipe, from the bottom of my heart"

This song and "You are the everthing" are the two songs that make me cry every time I listen. They're both beautiful, sad and nostalgic in equal measures.

I was obsessed with this song for awhile in the 90s when I was in a deep depression, I used to always think that the lyrics were "This lonely world is wasted on better guys, and high life", but listening to it now for the first time in decades I've just realised that the lyrics actually are "This lonely world is wasted on pathetic eyes". It really is a great song. This could be the saddest dusk I've ever seen, indeed.

Mike Mills comes in and takes this Rural Gothic song into an orchestral uplift, which completely changes the tone towards optimism in the last measures. Masterful, kind of his signature.

53 and hear this and it’s like I’m catapulted wonderfully back to the days when everything was an opportunity, everyone was a friend to meet and politics were something you disagreed about for a time but then shared a beer afterwards and laughed at your own excesses of fervour….wow…I long for those times again. One of my favourite R.E.M. songs and I never knew there was a video for it. Fantastic visuals, I love how the guy turns around after the music ends, to look back at whoever or whatever he is walking away from.

One of the only memories i have with my dad was playing with toy cars while he listening to this masterpiece, my father never was the same after the loss of his mother, struggled with cocaine and alcohol addiction for a long time. My god, just miss the days that he as actually himself.
