I just saw an interview with all of them together. It was a clip, so it didn't say anything about making new stuff. One thing said by a bad member was they have let go of the idea of despising their music. They had a phase where that happened I guess
I'm black too. This song is about the Mona Lisa, a "simple prop" whom Da Vinci cherished and toted with him wherever he went. The Mona Lisa is actually the image of the beast from the sea discussed in the Bible's Revelations. Da Vinci himself was one head of the beast in fact. He's a vampire who can age backwards, and he's also been known as Otto von Bismarck and Adolf Hitler. These 2 statesmen were stylistically different but their underlying bone structure was identical. And the German King at the time voluntarily conferred all of his power and authority to Prince Otto for some strange reason. This unprecedented event parallels the Biblical description of the beast's ascent to power. Here's the catch: America was originally ordained by God as a free land for whites. For the Gentiles specifically, which is virtually inclusive of all whites. Therefore I have a neutral attitude towards the fact that my great-great-great grandpa Otto is the Devil. This song fills my heart with sentimental nostalgia although I know exactly what it's about.
@@chrisvassiliou889 I personally think the RRHOF has become nothing more than a fraternity where only a select few are acceptable and I find that very annoying and disturbing...How can you leave out critically acclaimed bands like "BOSTON","BADFINGER,and"THIN LIZZY"...The RRHOF is nothing but a complete SHAM...
My dad passed away yesterday and now I'm making a playlist with all the songs he loved and I remember him by. This is one of them. Thank you dad for showing me the greatest artists of all times. Loved, missed and never forgotten 🤘🔥❤
Altogether this song is reminiscent of old European nobility whose nearest neighbors were miles away. Transportation took forever in the horse-and-carriage days, so these people would usually only gather for special occasions like balls, weddings and affairs of state. Their social skills were very formal by our standards because meeting people wasn't an everyday thing. And they learned to love their valuables, their "simple props" more than other people. These sentiments are enjoying a resurgence in our 1% era and Stipe was ahead of the game with this song.
@@TheMeanArenaA little of both. The Mona Lisa was Da Vinci's favorite simple prop. He brought her with him everywhere he went, like she was an actual human companion. The Mona Lisa really blurs the distinction between 'she' and 'it'. But she is a product of this low-tech feudal era, where the aristocrats and their similarly landowning friends went a little kooky from isolation. They probably had imaginary friends and whatnot.
@@TheMeanArena However Hell is other people. I can't remember which author said that but it's very true. Just because the nobility lived out in the middle of nowhere doesn't mean they were sad. They may have been eccentric but for the most part I think they were happy.
@@TheMeanArena The Mona Lisa's alternative title is La Giaconda, which means jocund. How great it is never to have to interact with the f**king a**holes in this world. This song really captures the whole attitude.
Back in the early 80’s my sister’s boyfriend saw R.E.M. play when he was in college. They split up, and she never forgot him. She died from Covid and I got word from him. Although my sister and he had both lived different lives, he said she had been the love of his life. Perhaps the band wrote this song about people being used, perhaps drugs. To me it will always be a man crying it out to a lost love, the “prop” being the actual words, or poetry, of the song. ❤️
REM have to be one of the finest band's in the world or maybe I'm biased as i was a 90's teen when most of REM'S music came out so happy memories. I got sober in 2004 and a short time later i went to an REM concert at my beloved Ipswich Town football stadium, it was very special as it was first live band i saw as a sober/clean man. 2020 still sober n clean
Congrats! Great message to help other ppl to get out every kind of addictions and staying clean.! How I wish that what happened to you also happened to a great friend of mine... I would love to hear from him a statement like yours... But unfortunately he only sinks deeper and deeper... He doesn't realize it's much better to stay clean and out off drugs... To say no to drugs. He's killing himself little by little. And he is taking down his mother's health too...
I think he died to save her soul that she might believe in Jesus and love and what on the surface ostensibly appears as a brutal rejection is in fact a way to protect her soul that she may be sealed for eternity.. I hope anyway…because it has happened to me…because your savage turn and rending really came out of left field and I didn’t give you a proper reason that I should be your enemy…in truth…for the most part…at least not such that I deserve this fate I am currently living…but happy to have evaded the curse of a third eye and all the horrible things witnessed thereby… hope everyone will be saved in the end and 144,000 is a code for everyone, but you’ve taken your abuse a bit too far tbf also…🙏
It's about the Mona Lisa. She was a simple prop whom Da Vinci loved. He brought her with him everywhere he went, like she was a helpless child he had to look after. This portrait was allegedly Da Vinci in drag. The cross dresser in this video has similar hair to the Mona Lisa and her facial features resemble Da Vinci's. The Mona Lisa is actually the image of the diabolical Beast from the Sea described in the Bible. That's how I know the drag queen resembles Da Vinci. He's still alive and I've watched the videos he's made under another of his pseudonyms. The scenes where the drag queen has one foot in a pedicure soaking bowl represents the Beast's amphibious nature. It has 2 habitations of both land and sea.

Hi Les, I Recommend a few indie songs that I came across called 'Where I Come From' and 'Covid19Jam' By Robert Nix Hope you have a great holiday season now.
R.E.M were one of the chief pioneers of indie rock in the 80s. Not just sonically, they literally built a huge chunk of the college radio/indie venues touring circuit that many other bands then used to travel across America, particularly in the southeast radiating out from their home state of Georgia. None of that stuff really existed when they started touring and they toured *constantly*, and networked incessantly with all kinds of local radio DJs, venue owners and promoters. By the late 80s they were absolute titans in the underground and many, many other independent bands used them as a blueprint and/or got to use the list of contacts they built up. Not saying they were the only ones, many other bands were right there alongside them in other parts of the country, but definitely in the southeast they were very well known as THE band to look up to long before they signed to a major label.
Alton Brown, the Food Network chef, was Director of Photography for this video. Alton Brown did the cinematography for this. R.E.M is one of the greatest rock bands in history.
The cinematography for this video was done by Alton Brown. Yes, the "Good Eats" Alton Brown. He was a film/video professional before ever doing a cooking show.
Seriously? Really? I did not know that. What a clever guy. I like him. I used to wat h cooking shows until i realized i already knew how to cook and those folks were ...well nuts. But Alton Brown i liked. He made sense. Huh...learned something new today. Thanks
@@taoist32 it still is. 😎 50 IS old an I’m 50! I don’t feel old, but I am. Let’s be honest, it’s been a hell of a ride though. Listened to this one on my Sony Walkman with my high top Nikes an acid washed jeans in high school an thought I was so unique! Gen X. I wore this tape out back then, they called it ‘College Music’ or ‘Alternative’. It was so new, so unlike all other music REM actually created a new category. Bought it on CD prolly late 80’s early 90’s an now more recently I’ve bought a third time on the cloud. I say getting old beats the alternative! Enjoy your youth for one day we will look back on this comment an say, “50? gosh we were so young then” One Love❤️
REM - "Can you do fire, when I say fire"? CGI guy - "I can do sparks." REM - "Yeah but I really wanted fire....at the fire spot" CGI guy - "I can do sparks."
This song makes me think of all the girls that I loved in high school, but let slip through my fingers because I didn’t tell them how I really felt about them.
im with you. i was always so stoned in high school and would get so nervous like heart beating out of my chest. weed is not very conducive to conversing with chicks. Like, .. lets go to a party.... but take bong rips before we go. Great idea. Once i got comfortable with myself 19-20 i kinda went rogue... im guessing i was trying to make up for all the missed opportunities. So many beautiful women in the world and i was crazy for them all... still am
So great to finally have these beautiful pieces of art remastered! This one looks so sharp now it's almost uncanny. It seems as if most great music has been remastered, but for whatever reason most groups continue to ignore their classic music videos, sometimes even still having the official uploads in 360 or even ghastly 240p, not even passable 480. Bravo to R.E.M. for restoring these classic clips!
The indoor shots were filmed at The Morton Theatre in Athens, GA before it was renovated. The shot of the 8 people in front of the windows (0:33) is looking house right from the center of the main floor of the theatre. Awesome visual
I’ve listened to quite a bit of REM in the past driving on a country road as a kid in Australia. Seems to suit country drives for some reason. I get what you’re getting at.
Yeah for sure, my parents were from the countryside but moved to London before I was born, but whenever I go there for the summer, these songs just strike me as I feel the air burn yet refresh me
It's always amazing to see how many people think this is a love song. It isn't. It's a song about someone that keeps using other people for their own selfishness. The band has said repeatedly that it was a dark song. It quickly started to be their number one hit so they just let people think of it as they want. Listen to the lyrics, not the music. The lyrics are all the same, they just repeat. The only difference is the last verse. It changes "a simple prop to occupy my time" to: This one goes out to the one I love This one goes out to the one I've left behind Another prop has occupied my time This one goes out to the one I love
I have been searching for this song for 10 years. Unable to remember a lyric or even the name of the band. Until one day I heard one of their songs on the radio and knew that voice. Very nostalgic to have found this.
This reminds me of junior high. I used to see the video on MTV after school. I was so mesmerized by music back then. I'm not sure what happened to talented artists. Sigh, what a weird and confusing world we live in today.
+Sheels1976 I wish I grew up in that era. I was born in 96 :( nowadays when you turn on MTV, instead of seeing good music videos, you see stupid shit like Teen Mom and Jersey Shore and shit
+samsquanch1996 haha true but we had no cell phones or Internet. It was very different back then. I almost got kidnapped walking home and I had no way of calling anyone. We had to actually use Walkmans with tapes. I still think it was a better time but I'm sure every older person says that lol.
This was my mom's favorite band. I'm here listening to it all thinking if her and how much I miss her. She was so strong. I love and miss you so much mommy
@@lowercase_the He was the cinematographer. Robert Longo ("Peace Sells but Who's Buying?" from Megadeth, "Bizarre Love Triangle" from New Order) was the director.
REM always stands for Rapid Eye Movement which comes just before we dream but this REM goes out to the one i love....and maybe that's a dream too......
This song for me is about music itself. 'A simple prop to occupy my time'. Music for me has been a best friend. It has entertained me. Kept me company, Made me laugh, cry and kept me comforted when nobody else could. It has broadened my knowledge and showed me emotion. Next time you listen to any artist, look beyond the music. At 0.40 is Stipes sister, Linda.
So they left a simple cross (God Jesus Christ) for the one they love FIRE-Satanic rock band. Man on da moon had other intresting lyrics- ''Here's a a truck stop instead of St. Peters'' YEA YEA YEA YEA which is an accurate portrayal of the masonic states and every masonic state including the bananna republic of ireland/ loose
You seem confused. You're saying music has brought you tremendous fulfillment, so it isn't "a simple prop to occupy your time" at all. You don't seem to understand what a "simple prop" is. He's saying the person he loves is really just a token novelty he uses to avoid boredom.
"The One I Love" This one goes out to the one I love This one goes out to the one I've left behind A simple prop to occupy my time This one goes out to the one I love Fire Fire This one goes out to the one I love This one goes out to the one I've left behind A simple prop to occupy my time This one goes out to the one I love Fire (she's comin' down on her own, now) Fire (she's comin' down on her own, now) This one goes out to the one I love This one goes out to the one I've left behind Another prop has occupied my time This one goes out to the one I love Fire (she's comin' down on her own, now) Fire (she's comin' down on her own, now) Fire (she's comin' down on her own, now) Fire (she's comin' down on her own, now)
I love the production. The way the vocals/harmonies are laid out, the jangly guitars, and how everything is all drenched in reverb. So '60s sounding. At that time in the '80s it was a breath of fresh air.
Pretty weird lyrics. This one goes out to the one I love.. Ok, love is a noble idea. Simple prop to occupy my time/fire.. Ok, that got gay really fast. A pp is the one he loves? Lol not as deep as it sounded at the beginning.
@@clintjones9848 Weird? No. The song is dark. It's not a love song regardless of what people seem to think. It's sung from the perspective of a sociopathic abuser, basically.
One thing that I love about this song is that like Phil Collin's "In the Air Tonight". People mistake it as a love song. When really it's the complete opposite.
he said that though he also said he'd be alright with people interpreting it that way. i think its still about love, even if its about "lacking what love is about". like how B182 "miss you" is a break up song... but many miss that.

I was 13 in '87. I remember I saw this video on MTV and I was absolutely mesmerized. I went out and got Document the next day. I had a brother who was into punk (Bad Brains, Suicidal Tendencies etc) and I liked it, but this was what I really liked.
R.E.M. are well served by the sound quality of most of these uploads. Crisp, immediate, and at an appropriate volume density. You can play this glorious music nice and loud! ❤
How can someone so young, know words or feelings these deep? He must be a an old sole to get through to so many and mean so much to so many of us. My son Michael died almost 6 years ago and I believe there are special gifts of those named Michael.
