Just because hubby is a cop doesn't mean there is no recourse for his bad behavior. All you have to do is follow the procedures for reporting him to internal affairs (or whatever it's called). All police departments realized the implications of loosing public trust and will act accordingly.
Well, considering that since 1933 a Troy ounce of gold has gone from being worth $20 USD to being worth $2,000 USD, our money pretty much is counterfeit. It won't take very long for it to inflate ot $20,000 USD per Troy ounce.
For story 3, I'm guessing the "lost" tickets were just plan B of the scam, trying to get a bit of money after the initial scam failed. The next likely possibility is the employee casually discarded the tickets, but the "customer" wanted the tickets back to try scamming another store.
Fifth story: When a car repair starts repairs unauthorized, the price is on them for their own stupidity. Also, why do you try to scam someone who is also savvy on your line of work?
In response to the mechanic story. I'm a female and used to work on cars in teens till 30s as a hobby but had to stop because of taking care of my mother. Since then, I would take my car into mechanics and tell them exactly what was needed, but they would see a female and think I was stupid, This happed so many times until Ifound a reliable mechanic.
There is another story posted by a woman who's father taught her everything and had the same bs with one place and she decided to call her father fake crying about the price, and slowly during that call it turned to laughter and her saying just loud enough for others to hear on how they were trying to rip her off and think she doesnt know what actually needs doing. All she took it in for was a free service in order to find out what the issues were and they decided to go and do all that work on it without her permission, practically breaking their own contractual agreement of the service which you signed when you dropped it off. They of course decided to call police in this story, police arrived, OPs father had arrived by this time but had just stayed back speaking with OP. Well the police go and speak to the mechanic and shop owner first, then come over to OP carrying a copy of the service agreement, which strangely looked like a customer copy. They ask OP for her copy of the service contract which she gave them, they looked at the copy they had hold of, both frowned, then one walked back in with the copy they brought out while the other officer called in another squad car, then started taking OPs statement. Turned out that the shop owner had written up a new contract and forged OP's signature, which OP admitted was easy to do. They then had destroyed the originals of the service agreement that OP had signed that they had kept. So both the mechanic and shop owner got arrested for forgery, along with a few other crimes. And get this, when the shop owner was being brought out, he is screaming that OP has to pay for the work that was done, however when the mechanic was pressed to go and return OPs car back to normal it was found out they had destroyed the items they had removed, and because OP needed the car to get to and from work, along with other family duties, OP ended up getting everything for free. OP did have to go as witness to their trial, and prosecutors had taken the extra step of getting the contracts fingerprinted and was able to prove when their lawyer brought it up that OP had signed it, that OPs fingerprints were nowhere to be found, but was able to prove that the mechanic's fingerprints were on her copy of the original service agreement, and only the mechanics and shop owners were on the forged copy.
And a few days ago, everyone jump on Karen who doubted the mechanic diagnosis of her car. Granted that it was her fault to have no mechanical knowledge to back her doubt. But since there are a lot of fraudulent mechanics out there, her doubt was understandable.
I went to a place that's gotten a reputation as being good and reliable for fixing a wide range of automotive issues. They ran some checks on the A/C, which wasn't working, fixed a "leak" in a refrigerant line, which I suspect now didn't exist, claimed the A/C wasn't working because it was overcharged, and then claimed it wasn't going to get as cold at the time (mid-March) as it would when the weather got hot. When I got it checked again, I found out no repairs had been done at all and the actual problem is a wiring harness that is as hard to find as it is to replace. I drive a 2011 Ford Escape, so I really don't want to put much more into it than tires and brakes. The heater is fantastic, and summer doesn't last long in northern Illinois, so I guess I'll just have to use 2/60 a/c when the weather gets hot again.
Big Fat Jane Story: If I'd been OP, not only would I call CPS to report Jane for both yelling at and not properly watching the kids and when she screamed at me in the street threatening to have my car towed and/or scratched if I didn't move it while her Husband is watching, I'd pull out my phone and call 911 saying " I'm [name] at [location] and my neighbour is currently threatening to have my car stolen and/or vandalized as well as threatening to assault me and her Police Officer Husband is sitting on their porch watching her and doing nothing about her Criminal Actions and I need a Police Supervisor here immediately please." I REALLY doubt Jane or her Husband would be amused when the Police Supervisor showed up...
Back when I was a fast food manager someone tried to buy a cup of coffee with an obviously fake hundred. Since I was in a good mood I told him he could leave now, or I'd have to test the bill with a counterfeit marker (standard policy) and would then be required to call the police (not generally policy but my GM was tired of fake bills coming through

Back when I worked as a gas station attendant I would have people come in now and then with fake notes, most of the time it was $20, but now and then got $50 and $100s, now working nights we were always told to immediately drop the two larger notes into the change safe and get change for them and then cash off the sale with the smaller notes. Well, the fake notes of course are immediately rejected by the machine. Well, this one night this guy came in to pay for over $100 worth of fuel and handed me two $100, one real, the other fake, thinking that I wouldnt notice one of them being fake. I could immediately tell by the feel of the note and just out of sight I did the tear test, here in Australia our notes are polymer so its really easy to find if a note is fake when you tear it, sure enough one note tore, I simply hit my panic button and went on to feed the real note into the machine before doing the fake. As luck had it a cop car had passed my worksite during the time the guy was handing the notes, found this out after when burning off the CCTV footage, so when the call went out for the alarm they immediately turned around. So by the time I was feeding the fake note into the machine, and it being rejected, they had come back without lights or sirens, pulled up in front of the guy's van and were racing inside with their hands on their weapons. The guy at that point had been arguing with me about the note not being fake, turned when he heard the door open behind him, and immediately went off about me calling the cops and still tried to argue that it wasnt a fake note after they cuffed him. I simply showed the cop the tear I'd made, which I had hidden under my finger when I pointed out the machine wouldnt accept the note. Never accused him of giving me a fake note, he said that himself, basically giving himself away. Had another four cop cars show up. Oh, icing on the cake, I got a mouthful from the night supervisor when he arrived for activating the panic button when there wasnt a robbery. However he had to give a groveling apology 30 minutes later when my manager and area manager arrived and they found out from the cops about the mouthful I got and the cops pointed out that the guy had over $10k of fake $50 and $100 notes on and in his van and had been dropping them all over Adelaide buying goods, which his van was half full of. So by me having pressed the panic button like I did it had saved them having to chase this guy, or even loosing him since they had no details up until that point about the vehicle the guy was driving.
Had a kid (maybe 11 or 12 yo) try that with me when I worked at McDonald's. The bill was so poorly made that I was just like "WTF?" Kid grabbed the bill and ran off.
Story 2: MaliciousCompliance meets EntitledPeople. They asked OP to "Do your job," and that can include calling a manager Seriously, people WILL check to see if the money you used is counterfeit. The business would suffer greatly if found possessing fake money (at least from what I heard)
Story 2: I find it particularly hilarious when people use huge wads of the most commonly counterfeited bills to buy something and get caught. But let’s be honest: if these people were smart, they wouldn’t have made it onto this subreddit
Brake one, one of the first things I did after my husband died was to take his Jeep in for servicing. It desperately needed it, I just hadn't had the time before. I already knew it also needed tires, but they don't really do them there. I took it to where he had gotten tires before. They tried to tell me the brakes were bad. Of course, I didn't believe them, and told them I'd have my son in law look at. That was last year. Since then, I've driven from South Jersey to eastern Kentucky twice and to the Lake George area in NY with those same brakes.
"Don't call for something like that again"? There's a hostile customer trying to run a lottery scam in their store. That's when you DO call the police.
I worked at a grocery store for few years. An employee found out one of the new hires didn't understand US currency well. He paid with monopoly money. A 500. Needless to say this poor woman almost got fired.lets just say the guy didn't know that someone had already called corporate. He got to leave in matching bracelets.
Story 5: OP could have had the jerk arrested for the Grand Theft Auto as well as for Destruction of Property for any unauthorized work done on the vehicle.
When I was 16 and worked in a small grocery store a little girl came in with a hundred dollar bill to buy a five cent package of gum, I immediately went to the store owner and told him that I was very suspicious because her dad was my granny’s brother and I knew that he had been to prison before for passing counterfeit money, , cue treasury department coming in, checking money, sending girl on her way, following her home, arresting uncle, sending him to prison again. Just keep your funny money to yourself, especially if you have already dealt with it before.
Plus I believe you can only claim loses up to the total amount you "won" or played so as to negate Taxes on winning tickets. If you win the big one all the money you spent in the game that Tax Year can be deducted from the total you won. Works best if you won a $2500 draw and played $2000 for that year you only have to pay tax on $500.
I was a register jockey at a convenience store in college and one day I had this idiot come in and try to pay using a dollar bill that was obviously a dollar bill printed off from his home printer. The rest of his bills were real, but that one wasn't. I refused the bill and told him he has to pay with real money or I will call the police. He tried to bully me, saying that he had accepted it so I had to as well. I informed him that by law, I know it's fake, I've informed him that it's fake and I showed him how it was a fake, therefore I cannot knowingly accept the money, or I can get into trouble. Since he knows its fake, he can get in trouble if he tries to spend it. He accepted the bill, he accepted the responsibility. He eventually left, without what he was trying to buy, and I never saw him again.
Story 5 - Unfortunately there are a lot of crooked mechanics out there that will rip off anyone that steps into their auto shop. Good on OP for sensing that guys BS and taking up on the morons dare to call the police. My family’s mechanic lives up the road from us and he’s both thorough and fair. He was also once my boss at a local Pizza restaurant but we’re still on really good terms.
I managed to find a reliable mechanic just up the street from my house. They even do things for free sometimes. I've recommended tons of people to them since I know it's hard to find trustworthy shops. Any industry that most regular people have no clue about is rife with scam artists because they know they can get away with it.
where i live you either get shaddy mechanics or you pay dealer prices so i just learned to do it myself unless it requires big tools then my friend does it for me.
The guys litterally was hopping that OP, as he was from another state, had no time to waste and was kind of "stuck" on what he would say. He found out that not really! But, on what he said about liability, for where I lived, he would have been half way truthful. Where I lived, mechanics can't let you get back on the road if you're car is not proper to keep going. Law ask them to do so and made them liable... until they make you fill and sign a discharge document that tell that you know that your car is not in shape and shouldn't be on the road. If you sign, now you can do what you want with your car, even drive it... but if you have any issue, like getting stuck on the highway, you will get fines. If you get into an accident, insurance probably wont cover you based on negligence ... and with this paper that you sign, you kind of gave them the argument by yourself.
The story about the brakes and the bad mechanic- I’ve had several mechanics tell me they couldn’t let me drive away bc they’d be liable if I was in an accident. They only got me once bc I told my dad what I had to do he was pissed saying they lied and never believe anyone who says that. It’s crazy to know how many companies tell their workers to say that. I’ve been told about 4 times after the initial mechanic screwed me over. Crazy
I remember once in a shopping centre I was with my family buying Christmas presents for other family members we saw a guy arguing with the mall security. It turns out the guy was caught shop lifting, the idiot dared the store security to call the police, and thief thought he wouldn’t get charged because he was a teenager. Long story they did and the thief was in tears when he saw the cops which in the end he was begging the officers not to arrest him. I guess the crying in public causing people around him having a laughing fit was enough of a punishment for him and the police gave him a warning and they took the dvds from plus he ran off home. The moral Is don’t ‘dare someone to call the cops because they will’

The lottery ticket story I've had happen to me in my store. My cashier said the tickets came back actually cashed already. The lottery ticket office called shortly after and I gave them the info I had. The guy was a regular customer but was working at another store a couple miles away. Turns out that the management in that store was puzzled why their lottery tickets weren't jiving. He was taking tickets people cashed into him then taking them around to other stores. Yes, he was fired. I don't know what the lottery bureau did to him.
Kinda the complete opposite of your story. I used to work a gas station, and one day on register a man comes in to buy lotto. He sits at the counter/bar we have for customers to eat if the want, and scratches them all in my line of sight. He got a $50,000 winner, but on scanning it, it read already paid. The ticket I JUST sold him was somehow paid out.

S.1 ... i had a similar 'calls the cops' from a guy whose partner had smashed windows on his vehicle, as he had tried to drive away from their government supplied house, she was on the front lawn looking happy as, and swinging a baseball bat daring him to try anything. Anyway i called the cops and the lady at the call centre was like 'not these two idiots again', i gave her all the info and i thought that was that, weirdly enough the cops called me back to say that they had picked up the guy on there way to the house ... apparently he had outstanding warrants (who would have guessed)
I used to work at a renaissance fair and we never checked any bills, told to accept everything and were even supposed to loudly celebrate when someone gave us a $50 or $100. I'm almost certain people gave us fake bills at some point because it would be so incredibly easy. Even to this day they still don't check when given a large bill. The owner feels that even doing a simple marker check would "ruin the authenticity" of the experience. But he's a jerk in general so I don't feel bad if people are ripping him off.
That reminds me of a story where op was a cashier at a store who watched some teens steal an anime box set so op called security/the police then the teens Karen mother called the owner & pitched a fit & the dumbass owner actually punished op & told him not to do that again so the op gladly sat back & watched the store get robbed till it had to shut down
Story 5 is a good example of why you should have at least a basic idea how cars work. Most mechanics won't turn rotors anymore, having one that knows how to do the job and when it's appropriate is Gold. I used to occasionally turn rotors at the auto parts store i worked at. Simple job, but rotors got so cheap it wasn't worth it by the time i left.
Gambling losses can ONLY be claimed on taxes against winnings from gambling, that is also being reported on the same return, to reduce the amount to be taxed.
If I ever live next to a daycare I'm going to be having cameras everywhere to make sure not only that they don't trespass into my property. But also to catch any kind of drama like this on camera so that anything should go down The cops will know what's going on.

Not all cashiers are clueless teens. And many big chains WILL check for the money being counterfeit. Lottery story: She might have wanted her tickets back because some types of tickets have second chance drawings. Or she wanted to continue to try to continue with a scam. Car story: While it varies state to state there are times when a mechanic is allowed to hold an unsafe vehicle, at least long enough for the police to arrive.
Story 3: I wonder where OP even works where they can do the lottery station at 16? Where I am you have to be an adult. All that aside, people can be real pieces of work when it comes to their tickets. We are constantly asking customers to fill out play slips if they want a lot of numbers because manually entering just one is a lot of work, and they just rattle off numbers like we don't need to keep up. They also keep trying to say they don't know how to, but if you can verbally say each step, you can fill it out on a slip. And of course if they say we did something wrong and refuse to take it, we are expected to pay for them out of our own pockets, because once a ticket prints it cannot be undone.
Being under age does NOT stop you from selling lottery, just buying it. Here in my state in Australia, and its the same from my understanding across the country, if you are under 18, the legal age to gamble, you have additional information you have to read regarding such, and I believe your parents can also be held accountable should you be caught selling to underaged buyers. The same goes for tobacco products, which can result in you getting fines upto 5k, and the store getting fines upto 25k. or even more. Worse still the store can loose their license to sell such products.
First story: OP did exactly the right thing. Speaking from a medical standpoint, that guy was in danger not only from the obvious, but any possible issues going on inside his body. Also gotta consider the possibility other drugs were involved. Having worked alongside cops plenty of times, I can also say this guy was a hazard to himself and others, and calling the cops was the right move. Story 3: Again, OP did the right thing. The intuition of "if Karen calls, she'll blow it out of proportion and waste city resources" was probably accurate. Of course, the cop was only reacting to what actually happened, rather than what could have happened, and likely didn't realize that. If he had, he would've thanked OP instead of chastising for calling. Besides, Karen was being disruptive, and a theft accusation was made. CYA in calling the cops was the best course of action. ...I wonder what the cameras showed. Did she put them back in her own purse and forget/lie about it?
Story 2 - Talk about stupid criminals, I remember watching a show about Dumbest Criminals and a guy walks into a store to rob it but they weren’t open yet and one of the employees told him that only the manager has the key to open the safe. So the guy leaves his OWN phone number with them to call him when the manager gets in. An hour later they actually call him back and he returns to that same store and police were waiting for him and arrest him. I swear I’m not making this up but what a dumb***.

Story 4 - OP and her husband are heroes for putting those power happy morons in their place. BFJ and her husband may’ve had the neighborhood intimidated because he’s a cop but OP and her husband weren’t taking their threats and BS. Serves them right that he was demoted and she lost her daycare and banned from being around children.
Story 3 the cop asked them not to call for exactly what op said. If op let the woman call then yes she would have probably gotten a ticket for wasting police resources
FYI--gambling losses CAN be claimed on your tax forms...but ONLY to offset whatever WINNINGS you have to pay taxes FOR. If you have no winnings claimed on your taxes, then the losing tickets are completely useless.
Criminals always think they can bully people into allowing them to be criminals, since it works a lot of the time they keep pushing their luck until they run into one of us with a diligaf attitude.
BFJ story: Not everyone can handled being a policeman. They will misuse their authority and some will use it to their advantange. Karma handled BFJ and her policeman husband and he will probably never again come up for promotion.
Story 4: An outcome so sweet it's going to give me diabetes. That was just brilliant and all it required was a tiny domino falling regarding legal street parking.
Regarding story 1, as someone with a history of depression and self-destructive behavior, this sounds like he snapped hard. He wanted a result, but he didn't want to be the one to do it. Honestly, it kind of sounds like suicide-by-cop.
#3 has to be an older Karen, because that is the Karen est scam, it's not about the prize money it's about getting free lotto tickets, she tried to cash them knowing they were spent, she throws a fit and gets everyone rattled, swipes the tickets off the counter, calls them stoken/lost and forces the store to compensate her for new tickets!
Story 3 did not want their losing ticket back to claim gambling losses on taxes.... they wanted the WINNING, already claimed, ticket they tried to scam that retailer with back so they could try to scam another retailer into paying them twice.
the past decade has seen an extreme rise in Karens being arrested...the police should start a division called "The Karen Catchers"....instead of "Dog Catchers"
Story 4: With police reputation being very low right you would think the husband would have the sense to avoid any negative attention with his suspension but no bad cops becomes a pencil pusher.
I went to get my car inspected on Thursday and the mechanic said I'd need new brakes and rotors for all four tires, and a new muffler. Quoted me $1,500. I then took it to get a second opinion. I just need new brakes and only a tailpipe. New quote? $400. SMH.
Story 2: Criminals are dumb. Nowadays to cut down on accepting stolen items at pawn shops they require you to have a driver's license and sometime use a thumbprint. At a gated community I work at was someone wandering the neighborhood and taking off with anything he found in open garages and selling them to pawn shops. Guess who had a visit from the police 2 weeks after the thefts started.
It would have been even better if OP took the cops with him and the people he was serving had a bunch of outstanding warrants against them. With their attitude, I doubt that they are strangers to the courts.
The husband that is a cop is lucky he didn't lose his job and pension. As to the lying repair shop they should be investigated for fraud and then lose their permit and get shut down.

First story: My interpretation of the incident is that the drunken man was *daring* people to call the cops. So OP did; knowing full-well of course that this was the case. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
I live in a neighborhood full of cops. The half mile drive to my in laws house has 16 cops on its route. It’s usually everyone play nice and keep the peace. But here’s my number if any concerns come up.
Ford shop in Calgary did this tire thing to me, too. I wanted new tires. We discussed cost, and they said $750. I said, "So $750, I drop that exact amount and I leave, no extra fees, all work paid, $750 drive away." They said yes. Went to grab lunch, they never phoned, went back, and now the bill is $1200. I said, "Here's the $750 I'm leaving." No no no they had to fix the breaks. I sad undo it. I didn't ok the work. I came for tires, not breaks. They said they couldn't let me drive on bad breaks bc they would be liable. Manager!! I gave them the $750 after they tried to haggle. NO $750. Still hate that shop to this day. It's been 25 years, them and 2 other shops. Boy, do I have stories. One with cross thread lug nuts, and over machined breaks on both front tires before I drove the Coquihalla. Wtf!!
Story 3. Yeah, the cop's reaction there was kinda weird. Like, what do you want? You getting called in to defuse an angry Karen? Or a ranting hysterical Karen causing the police to send in the SWAT team thinking an armed robbery is going on?
My grandma used to work as a teller at a bank & she told me a story where the bank had a certain drawer that when opened would send a silent alarm to the police that they were being robbed & when that drawer was opened the police would call the bank to check if everything was alright well one day a teller accidentally opened the drawer & because the bank was busy they failed to answer the phone leading the cops to come swarming in guns drawn thinking that the bank was being robbed

WRT the mechanic story, my son went to one of the tyre places near us to get one of his rear tyres replaced because it either has a bulge or a slow leak. Anyway, the tyre guy said that he couldn't just change 1 tyre, he had to change both rear tyres because he would damage his diff. 🙄 IT WAS A FRONT WHEEL DRIVE😂😂 My son just just laughed and him and called him out on his BS and got his one tyre changed 😂
Always, always get a second or even a third repair estimate. This doesnt just apply to automobile repairs. Landscaping, plumbing, electrical, roofing, dirt work, and HVAC repairs can be expensive. Not all contractors, mechanics, and service providers are honest. My car AC wasnt cooling properly. I couldnt hear the compressor turn on and assumed the worst. Went to a local AC shop and was quoted $1800 for a new compressor, dryer, and freon. Later that day, I was telling a coworker, an electronic technician, about my AC. He asked if I checked the freon level myself. He explained in newer cars, the AC compressor will not turn on, if the freon level is low. $50 and a can of freon later, my car AC was blowing ice cold air. Getting a second opinion saved me $1750.
story 5: Had a mechanic tell me the spark plugs on my diesel were going to die soon and needed to be replaced. as a former mechanic myself, I knew it was total BS. Had a different one tell me that an 86 bronco doesn't have two fuel pumps, as NO vehicle has 2 (for those who don't know, the 86 bronco did indeed have two fuel pumps, one for volume and one for pressure. It was also notorious for the pressure pump sticking full open and flooding the engine). I've also had one tell me the "flux capacitor" was going out in a different one of my vehicles. all of these are total BS lines. know your vehicles so you don't get railroaded. and btw, the reason I don't do my own work is that I can't. As I said, former mechanic. this is due to health issues. I literally cannot do my own vehicle repairs anymore.
I like that fact that in America, the cops turn up quickly for the smallest things. In the UK, you’d be lucky to get the cops to turn up if you’ve been burgled.
There was a brake shop in Florida called just brakes. It was a chain throughout Florida. They have all since closed down because they pulled the same BS on everybody. We can’t legally let you drive your car away without you getting thousands of dollars of work done. Yeah, that entire chain went down.

I am rather curious as to how the crook and the three ladies in Story 2 got the counterfeit bills in their possession? It takes an awful lot of time and effort in creating counterfeits. They must've been rather patient. I also wonder if they pulled it off at another store.

Story 1: This is more a Malicious Compliance story rather than an entitle person. Story 2: Another Malicious Compliance story. I hope the judge throws the book at them. Story 3: Karen should've been kicked out the moment she kicked off. She was clearly pulling of a scam. Story 4: Jane's hubby is not fit to be a police officer. He deserved to be demoted. Story 5: That shop was clearly out to scam OP.
To be fair, if it was a small town, that cop might have been like 1 of 10 cops in the whole town, so there was a chance that they choose him to take all the Karen calls like that one. I would have asked to not be called again too.
Op should've also done a investigation on the auto shop by having a private investigator look at this guy and get the rest of the people that have been giving bad reviews on there chance for a class action lawsuit against his asshole.
She didn't want winning tickets to claim loses on her taxes because it is a winning ticket not a losing ticket . Plus gambling winnings is taxable income meaning she would pay more in taxes which i doubt she wanted to do . No she just tried to scam a business out of double winnings more than likely it was a secondary scam where she said they lost 2 winning tickets to try and get money . The cop probably told her to leave and he won't arrest her , that's why she booked it .
I have a friend who was also told that by the mechanic that it would be illegal for him to let them take their own car once again it did not work but at least the cops didn’t have to get called
Story 2 at least in the US passing counterfeit bills is a federal crime investigated by the secret service. Story 3 lottery ticket are bearer instruments unless signed IE whoever presents them to the redeeming agency can collect.. To claim losses usually you have to document what you spent, what you lost proving you lost more than you spent though in the case of lotto you'd probably have to document any winnings at all.
To be fair, in that last story most people deal with scammers by either using threats or just palin messing with them. So I don't necessary think it should be on this; they're not Alpha Karens, they're just people who don't take scammer bs.
The mechanic story happens more often than one would think but if u take ur car into a mechanic shop for say new brake pads the mechanic cannot do any other work or order any additional parts to say the engine if they find an issue with it without contacting the owner for permission to do the additional work otherwise it's illegal and some sort of theft
