After the SECOND time the 'plate lady' broke one of MY plates, she would forever (in MY house) be eating her dinner off a PAPER plate and her drink would be in a red solo cup. I MIGHT also ask her if she's seen a DOCTOR about her coordination problem that is causing her to drop plates all the time. But I'm petty like that.

That's where my mind went with the repeated breakage of OP's heirloom China. It was not SIL's to break even if it "wasn't her style". Far as I'm concerned, OP was more than giving to serve SIL on toddler's plates .

Sharing means - YOU keep your stuff and give to others as you seem fit. Because it is YOUR stuff you are free to decide if you want to share or if you want to keep your belongings to yourself. This worked perfectly on our playground & most children were very understanding and waited until the owners of any given or interesting thing were ready to share 😇

I had a coworker tell a mean woman "I hope you have a better day." The woman looked shocked and then left with one last huff. I'd just tell them to have an interesting day if the behavior is consistent. Because interesting isn't inherently bad or good. I had a dude come in to cash a work check once but our system kept declining it. I tried about three times and our system just wouldn't take it. Dude was furious, cussed me out six ways to Sunday and stormed out after I'd told him there was nothing I could do to make the system accept the check. About a week or two later he came back and when he saw me he rushed over telling me he'd been coming back daily since our interaction to see me. I usually worked the night shift but happened to be on a morning shift the day he'd come in with the check and he just happened to be swinging by for some groceries that night. Told me that day he'd needed that check to pay his rent or he'd be late and that's why he was so upset, but then told me regardless it didnt excuse him treating me badly when the situation wasnt my fault. Have to admit I was really taken aback because it's not very often that a rude customer in the moment would own the mistake and come back to apologize. I accepted it graciously and wr had a nice chat for a bit before I had to get back to work. After that he was polite as peaches when he'd see me in the store. Really made my night though. ❤

Having sold at craft fairs etc. I can guarantee there is very little chance any of the booths need/want to hire. Most of them are run by the owners that MAYBE make enough profit to pay themselves. For most of them it's a side gig. There are some dedicated crafters that put enough time into it they do well, but most are just making enough to make it worth it. As someone who’s worked retail for 16 years I have had parents treat my store like a daycare or playground. I once even had to help a crying toddler find her mom. The mom just brushed everything off when we returned her daughter. I whispered to an employee, who’s also a mom, one way ticket for your kid’s head to be found in a swamp (Adam Walsh reference) I swear when it’s my last week or month on the job I’m going to say that to the parent of the loose child. See if it’s a wake up call. To parents who do leave their kids with random people. How do you know that person isn’t a kidnapper, or child molester, or human trafficker or any other type of criminal?

I have to wonder if they are the first to try a lawsuit if something happened due to their own negligence and blatant stupidity. I don't go to a daycare to shop for groceries or clothing; likewise I would not drop off a child or baby at a store for child care.

If you're the type of parent that would leave your kid with a random stranger or just plop them in a toy aisle to distract them while you run off to do whatever, then chances are you won't really care what happens to them unless there are repercussions for you; or if you can use them as bait for a lawsuit (which would more than likely backfire).

I used to volunteer at a charity shop, early to late 00's and a Karen left a 5 ish year old kid in the shop while she went to get her hair done. Never said anything to me or anyone just plopped her kid in front of the toys and children's books and walked out. I heard the kid crying, as the toy section was out of sight of the tills and the manager called the kids grandparents, as they were thankfully regulars (the manager remembered the kid being with them) and the grandfather had to leave his wife in the hospital (she was having tests) to come get her. He was P!SSED and called his son, who was on a business trip and the police. Last I heard she got divorced, lost custody, she went to jail for a bit, and had to go back to Nigeria after she got out. (Edit: the cops said awful parents leaving their kids with complete strangers to look after is a far too common occurrence)

Story 3: Sharing is caring, but not everything is to be shared. Also, the fact that Karen was just a random person makes me wonder if she just goes to parties, invited or not, to steal s**t. And the contempt towards disabled people, that seems to happen quite a bit, we need to get rid of that
@impishrebel5969
@impishrebel5969 7 месяцев назад
The whole "sharing is caring" is pretty damaging, actually. It was a mentality foisted on me when I was a kid and the adults around me prevented me from setting boundaries with my belongings (as in nobody would let me have any boundaries and told me to share no matter what) and as a result too many AH other kids destroyed my things or relatives tossed things I wanted to keep without asking. It still irks my socks my mother allowed her boyfriend's daughter to borrow my flared jeans, a pair that was my favorite and gods willing would still have been in my wardrobe today, and the seeyounextuesday kept them because she thought since my mom worked in the medical industry we had all the money in the world (we didn't) and I was somehow the bad guy for demanding them back (I didn't get them back), or lent my barbie corvette that I had since I was 6 to her boyfriend's other daughter's son and let him break it when I'd, until that point, kept it pristine for 15 years(I was actually an adult by that time-- imagine lending out someone's special belongings like that "just because it's a toy" but she sure wasn't lending out my brother's toy camel). It undermine's a child's sense of property in a big way, and yes, some things that belong to a child need to be allowed to be them-only, *especially* when they've grown up. I absolutely loathe how "share-happy" adults were in the 90s that they never learned how to stfu and sit down when the kids grew up. Mind you, the "share-happy" generation of parents are the ones that are now the ones you see in justnoMIL and entitled parents that stomp all over boundaries and scream "but faaambly" when they don't get their way and invite themselves to live with you and your spouse.
@AnimaMandala
@AnimaMandala 7 месяцев назад
@@impishrebel5969 Besides, teaching your kids how to share ALSO means teaching them patience. Something that a Karen could never possibly comprehend. And you're absolutely right about boundaries. Nobody has the right to decide for somebody else's kid what they should do with their personal property. And the fact that they just crashed the party, made off with some free cake and almost the girl's toy, it has me concerned that this woman is actually teaching her son how to STEAL. Because unfortunately even shoplifters and scammers have kids.
@meh2510
@meh2510 7 месяцев назад
The thing about sharing is caring is that if you ask for something, I no longer consider it sharing; so I don't care if I refuse your request. If I offer you something (a drink, a snack, a meal, movie, or turn on the video game consol); then that is sharing and is a display of my trust or affection for you. I absolutely hate to be pressured into something and giving in to pressured charity makes me feel resentful, especially if a rebuttal is offered after an initial negation. I'm alright if they ask for a can of soda or something small that I would have offered anyway if I thought about it, but I won't get the warm feelies I might get if I had offered initially. Granted, I'm also Autistic so my take on the social niceties of sharing might be off the norm.

Exactly the contempt towards people with disabilities needs to stop. It is not their fault that they were born with a disability. I actually read a comment on another RU-vid channel, trying to blame the parents for the way that the child turned out disabled. I really ripped into him. I used to be a team leader, supervising, adults with disabilities. Teaching them, how to do different jobs. I spent nearly eight hellish years working in cinemas. - Staff generally were great and so were most of the customers. But you could guarantee at least one entitled parent a week. We would do 'kid shows', early Saturday performance of a child friendly film from around 10 a.m. cheap tickets and EVERY piece of advertising stated children must be accompanied by an adult, and no single adults allowed. - We would have at least one member of staff for every 15- 25 children plus an extra in screen for the duration of the show. - Legal requirement, and just common sense, and nearly every show one of our staff would 'remind' parents that they can not leave their child with us and then go off shopping or to the coffee shop down the street....EVERY one of them thought there was nothing wrong leaving their own children with strangers for an hour or so.... Some people should never be allowed to be parents....

Some years ago, I made jams to sell at fetes, fairs and markets. There was a woman who ran a restaurant in our local area. She saw my product. I bought the glass jars and made my own labels which were really colourful. She looked at my jams and vinegars and told me that she would like me to make the jams and she would put her own labels on the jars and sell them in her restaurant. I was absolutely gob smacked. I knew she would pay me a pittance and put exorbitant prices on them. But I wasn't interested and told her so. She looked a little crestfallen but didn't say anything. When I read about the Karen in story 2, I immediately thought of this. Incredible.
@foogod4237
@foogod4237 7 месяцев назад
The first story was really heartbreaking to hear, that somebody would actually feel like they were forced to give up their source of income (and worry about how they were going to feed themselves and pay bills) because of having to deal with people like that. Where was her manager at the time? Allowing anyone (customer or not) to berate your employees like that is entirely unacceptable. I like to think that if I were a customer in that shop at the time, I actually would have spoken up and taken the karen to task for her completely unacceptable behavior. Employees often feel like their hands are tied in this situation, but as customers, we have much much more freedom to do the right thing when necessary. Please, everyone, do not just stand by and watch when you see somebody being abused around you (and this entirely was abuse). In this sort of situation, you have more power than they do, and you need to actually make use of it to stand up to people like this. What's the worst that can happen? They start yelling at you instead? Good, because unlike the employee, you really don't have to care about anything they say, and can tell them exactly what they deserve to hear! Maybe worst case, you get also kicked out of the coffee shop for causing a scene? Oh darn. After all, it's not like you need to be there to make a living, and there's probably another one you can go to on the next street corner anyway...

Take the higher of the two prices, double them up, then take your SIL to small claims court to get her to pay for the replacements. Hold her accountable.

Ad-hoc child-minding: My eldest niece, aged about 8 or 9 (now 64!), was standing near the toilets at a railway station when a lady rushed up, thrust a baby into her arms, and dashed into the Ladies'. A few minutes later she came out (rather less hurriedly), retrieved the baby with profuse thanks, and went on her way, leaving my niece slightly bewildered at having been briefly entrusted with the son of a very well-known actress. I used to work at Sears in the woman's clothing department. I was standing inside the door of the fitting room going through things on the return rack because I was in the process of putting things back on the floor. This woman comes up with a kid that looked about a year old in a stroller. She parked the stroller outside the fitting room and grabbed her things to try on and went in a room and closed the door. She didn't say a word to me so I was thinking was she expecting me to watch her kid? I thought about it for a few seconds and decided that I'm being paid to work for the store, not babysit. So I took an armful of clothes and walked away. I don't know what happened after that because she was gone when I came back. To this day though whenever I remember the incident, I still wonder what she was thinking.

What Zombinosh said. It’s more likely SIL doesn’t like that someone stole her brother and decided destroying heirloom china was “an eye for an eye”. That BS about someone else’s china not being her style sounds like my sister tbh. She didn’t want the family Bible (which is an heirloom with birth, marriage, and death records going back to the 1700s as well as the Bible written in both 1700s and 1800s English with gold leaf and color illustrations)… Nope. My grandmother punished us kids and her own kids by serving on paper plates every holiday. She had a whole cabinet of plates, bowls and silverware. Apparently we didnt deserve to eat off them bc we didn’t know how to treat them. My sister broke a bowl by throwing it into the sink. My aunt got made at my uncle and threw a plate at him. The dishes were piled high and no one was willing to clean them. We had no electronic dishwasher and I offered but kids weren’t allowed to handle her plates anymore after what my sister did more than once. So according to her, paper plates and plastic silverware only. Cups were also plastic or styrofoam and as we cleaned up, she dusted off the china cabinet that housed the dishes we use to use. 😂

Since SIL broke priceless heirloom dishes, she should pay OP some amount for what she did. I hope OP kept the pieces! A friend of mine gave me a unique, beautiful set of dishes. During a move, one of the plates broke. I used a thin line of super glue on the three pieces, put them together and used something to hold them in place while they dried thoroughly. *I'll tell you what the employee at the fabric counter should have done: She should have quietly gotten another employee to take the child to customer service as an abandoned child. Either the mother would hear the eventual announcement by customer service once the manager is advised, or she comes back before that happens and doesn't see her child where she left it. When she asks the employee, then the gal tells her "How would I know you were assuming I'd babysit, ma'am? You apparently just walked off, and I have a job to do that I'm paid to do. Somebody seems to have taken your child. You better go to customer service and talk to the manager. I have customers to attend to and I'm sorry, but that isn't my job here, ma'am. Good luck."
