Giving a knife as a present in Finland is valued because puukko is considered both a useful (survival) tool and something to defend yourself with if need be, so it tells the recipient you care for their wellbeing. But the Finnish Defence Forces do not give knives for soldiers because it is considered a highly personal item and you are expected to bring your own. That is so even though the soldier handbook specifically demands everyone to know how to use puukko to start a fire and as a secondary melee weapon.
@Polydeukes68
@Polydeukes68 Год назад
When in the Finnish Army you are graduating from non-commissioned officer school or reserve officer school (not sure about correct names) its tradition that everybody takes part of group purchase of "kurssipuukko". This is a Finnish puukko with engraving of the course name and/or number and your name on the blade. Then for the rest of the national service you proudly carry this knife on your field uniform belt. And of course the knife is often used for years and years after the service.

That map of European countries ranking languages basically answers the question "How similar is it to english?"
@jimig.688
@jimig.688 Год назад
Yep, no way an average person would go from zero knowledge to fluent English in 12 weeks unless they literally spend all of their time on it, and there are so many variables in learning a language that you can't just say "this language takes 24 weeks to learn and that takes 44 weeks".

9:20 actually when Vilho’s company’s secretary/kirjuri told him about receiving the Mannerheim cross, he said “Mikäs se semmoinen risti on?”, or in English “what kind of a cross is that?” So you were right, he was the 4th soldier to receive the mannerheim cross, and whilst the three before him were really high ranking officers (colonels and such) and he won it as a PRIVATE. And he essentially just reacted with what you said. Badass. He eventually ranked up all the way to “Ylikersantti” (or the rank above sergeant)

Finnish, Estonian and Hungarian have once been a single language. Hungarian split from Finnish and Estonian languages like 4500 years ago and Estonian and Finnish around 2000 years ago. There are alot of words that are related in finnish and hungarian like blood in finnish is veri and in hungarian vér.
@Aquelll

There is also an old Finnish quite self-ironic joke about our Finno-Ugrian origins with Hungary. It has been determined that we share some ancient common cultural heritage from the far east, even from Japan. At some point in ancient history us Finns and Hungarians decided to move westward, to the world of tomorrow or whatnot. Well, as the story goes, the major split between us Finns and Hungarians happened when our peoples crossed the Ural mountains. Some of us decided to go south where the weather is warm, the land is fertile, the food is plenty and the sexy hot women walk around in skimpy clothes.

The rising sun in the background of the 1906 postcard is indeed a reference to the Japanese empire, at this point in History Russia had just lost the Russo-Japanese war and a lot of opressed people under the Russian empire took advantage of that in order to demand liberties or fight for independence. There were even Finnis patriots yelling "Banzai" and the Finns tried to send volunteers to train in Japan (which didn't happen, and Sweden also refused so they went to Germany and became the famous Jägers)

The knife thing was a culture clash with some Latvian visitors we had. We gave them puukkos as a welcome gift, but they insisted on paying for them. This was in the 90's and back then neither spoke good English, so it took a bit to understand, that in Latvian culture you can apparently only accept a knife as a gift, if you give a coin in return.

About the free buckets... This is embarrassing, but my wife went to the polling station of the church only because they gave a free bucket to everyone attending the polls. For your guide these polls usually get a 3 to 5 pct attendance. And now, if I ask her if she was somewhere (interesting) she replies "no, there were no buckets given". Well, joking of course...

Do tell your wife about K-Kauppas Superpäivät, bucket of fruits or veggies with 5€ or something like that, very cheap. Last time there was even color options for the buckets! I wanna say Superpäivät is every spring and fall, one week long and heavily advertised. I love the notion that only interesting places give out buckets, totally made me smile, greetings to your wife.

As an (unfortunate) American, I'm sorry you had to endure that clip. I assure you many Americans do not share that view you had to stomach! :( Love your content!

I just learned how Fox got into real trouble, the hosts (including Tucker Carlson) text messages are just brutal. Somehow I thought they would be “too big to fail”, but Im happy to see they didnt get away with the stolen election narrative. I have lots of American friends, so Im relieved there has to be some sorta sense on what you can call news. And that the hosts arent actually that crazy, they just play these persons for ratings. Btw, our local Fox (mostly Simpsons & Family Guy, no news) suddenly changed its name to Star, now I know why. Greetings from sunny, but still cold Helsinki :)

actually the place names of Helsinki are literal translations making a joke how absurd they sound if you actually think about them literally.For example Etu-Töölö means "the frontal Töölö" but they translated it as Töölö with benefits since etu means frontal and benefit.

Sauna whisks are the best, they get your blood flowing and smell so good, like rainy forest. The only con is that the leaves fall and you have to clean them up. 🫀
