First of all - R.I.P Mr Whitlam. However; 1. He didn't get Australia out of Vietnam - The previous Liberal Government did....he just oversaw the last few troops coming home and kindly arranged for all National Servicemen to be discharged from service as soon as possible. 2. Agreed with his policies on Indigenous land Rights etc. 3. Agreed with policy on NT ACT having a say in Senate 4. Disagreed and still do on Voting age being lowered to 18....should still be at least 21. 5. Reduction on tariffs was nice for buyers of oversees goods and the Button Plan finally resulted in the demise of the local Vehicle and other Manufacturers over the years. 6. Agreed ultimately with change to national Anthem 7. Agreed with abolition of Death Penalty but still personally believe there is room for it in the most severe and absolutely 'no doubt' cases. 8. Welfare reforms were well intentioned but ultimately 'abused' by many - hence the high cost - leading to a 'welfare star mentality' which still prevails. 9. Free University resulted in many students who had either no intention - or were incapable of completing or doing much with their degree's, some of which (degree's) were basically not productive. Some students spent many years acquiring multiple degrees without any intention of putting them to use. I feel that at least some contribution towards tertiary education by the student is fair and reasonable. 10. Agree with equal role = equal pay for Women. 11. Although very sensitive at the time as far as China (and Russia) was concerned - relations with all other countries is desirable where possible. 12. Not sure the USA was 'enamoured' at the time. Unfortunately Mr Whitlam's Government had little regard for the State of the nations Finances and caused many people - mainly small business and framers a lot of difficulties....Inflation and Interest rates were throughout the roof and we were looking at becoming a financial basket-case leading to clandestine deals being negotiated to borrow massive sums of money from shady oversees figures. The result of this performance was born out by Labor receiving a massive landslide defeat after Mr Whitlam's dismissal and again at the following Federal Election. Mr Whitlam was not 'The Messiah' (maybe for a few) but his Government was, let's say, 'Cavalier' at best and ultimately destroyed itself.... Bring on the Vitriol!!!
