That happened to me in a place that is known for really cheap products where everyone wears black with an orange name and an exclamation point in the logo. I was shopping with my then partner and I was wearing nothing that looked like an employee uniform. This woman stopped me and asked me for light bulbs. I looked myself up and down. She's waiting for an answer. “Do I look like I work here?” She got embarrassed and apologized. My partner and I started looking at bedding and pillows. It happened again. Lady said we were stocking the shelves and asked if we had stuff for a certain type of bed. I told her we didn't work there. She looked annoying because, I guess it appeared to her that we were placing product on the shelves. We were just looking at stuff and putting them back where they belong. She sort of gave us a dirty look and walked away. That was pretty much the end of it.

I was in a store in a mall looking for some basketball shorts for my son and because i didn't had much time i decided to ask someone so i see a lady and say "excuse me can you" and i stop take a step back as i look how she is dressed and it didn't look as a store uniform and i say "sorry", but she said "what can i do for you? Some years back - early 90s - my family moved to a small town that had recently had a well-known "Home Improvement" store close. It was still the time of land lines, no caller ID, and phone books. It was not long before we started getting phone calls wanting to know if we had this or that appliance, how much were so many bricks, lumber, did we carry such-and-such an item. Come to find out, that we had been assigned as our home phone number, their old business phone number. We soon started doing just what OP did, and giving out 'information' to those customers. Don't know what happened after we moved, but it continued up to the time we left.

Yeah legally speaking your phone number if its a land line and in some cases cell phones as well are considered public knowledge and if your getting phone calls like that, its up to you to change your number. You could sue for harassment especially if they refused to remove your number from a list or their info but even then the most that would happen is you would be out a lot of money.

The best that Op could do is pay for a new phone number and take Fred to Small Claims court to pay for the cost of a new phone number and filing fees. Broken ankle: in Red Cross First Aid class back in the 60’s we were taught that the victim usually knows if a bone is broken. That however isn’t always the case. The general consensus is that a person cannot walk with a knee or ankle that has a cracked or broken bone. This also isn’t always the case. In 1968 I stepped in a rut and hyperextended my knee, cracking the bearing surface of the thighbone in the knee. I thought I had sprained my knee and got back up and continued bucking hay bales. The knee hurt for about 5 days and then got better. It was 1988 when a surgeon found the healed crack. I am telling this to explain that if someone says that they have a cracked/broken bone, treat it as a broken bone. Also if the person goes down hard even if they can walk on it, albeit hobbling, treat it as a broken bone/torn tendon or ligament. Better to over treat than under treat. That said Karen appears too mobile, too feisty for real injuries.

Ten years ago I was moving cattle gates at the store with a coworker to put them into a storage rack. Walking backwards, I tripped on a wood block used to support things and fell, the round open end of the gate's tubing coming down on my knee cap. It hurt, but I walked it off and kept working with a brace with its swelling and hurting the next week or so. After it all subsided (and to this day), I could feel a couple little bone fragments under the skin where they chipped off the kneecap. I can even move them around a bit under the skin. More to your point, technically a broken bone, though obviously not a load-bearing one. When I broke my wrist the second year in a row, same spot, same fracture, I (at the age of ten) told the doctor :"It's broken." After the xrays he came back and said: "Yep. It's broke. Good call." I still remember that feeling from it to this day, 30 years later.

I have some training in BJJ, and have almost taken down a few entitled Karen's who decided to "attach" themselves to me. Fortunately I know my local cops pretty well (used to train at the same gym). They usually end up telling the Karen that they're lucky I was able to stop myself. Almost every time they've gone on a tirade about having me arrested, and a couple times I've had to go view the cctv with Karen, cops, and a manager. Everytime the cops turn to me and, addressing me by name, ask if I want to press charges. I usually don't, but the few times it has seemed like the Karen hadn't learned a lesson, I did. Moral of the story: You don't know what anyone is trained in or has experienced. You grabbing someone may result in you body making involuntary contact with the ground, you getting decked, a war vet fighting you, or an abuse victim trying to claw your eyes out. Like we're taught in preschool: keep your hands to yourself.

For story 2 reminds me of this debt collection agency who kept calling looking for a lady who was using my number, saying it had been verified for the past 2 years, even though I had it almost a decade. It got to the point I had to get my ISP/Phone provider to send them a letter, along with one from an attorney stating that it wasn't this ladys number anymore and to stop harassing me. They then threatened to have me arrested if I didn't find this lady and put her on the phone. I told them simply go ahead, and repeated it when they were taken aback and gave them the local non emergency number for my local police, and the local District Attorneys number too, and told them to have fun, because if I am arrested and in jail you can't bother me. It has been over 2 years since that incident and have not heard back from them.

A thing about debt is, they are sold around. So, you have debt to company A, then if the debt get unpaid, it is sold to some unscrupulous company, and if they can't get any payment from it, it is packed with other debts of that kind and sold to yet more unscrupulous company, and on and on. So don't be satisfied if you already ward off this one debt collection company. In a few years, all the data will be sold to other debt collection company, the new one will find your number, and you will have to deal with it again.

Story 2 - Nicely done, OP! I could see where that story was going before it was halfway finished. Back in the 1980's, newspaper columnist Mike Royko told of a similar situation with AT&T. They had an 800 number that was the same as his office number, so if they didn't dial 1-800 first, they'd get him instead. AT&T wouldn't change their number, so he resorted to (as he put it) "various guerilla tactics". His most effective tactic was finding out the caller's ethic background, and then tell him / her that AT&T was no longer serving that ethnicity. His reason was usually based on ethnic stereotypes. For instance, he once told an Irish caller, "You just don't pay your bills. We don't if you spend all your money on beer or what, but you can't be trusted." He told an Italian that AT&T technicians didn't like working on phones that were garlicky. It wasn't long before AT&T ran a full page ad apologizing to Royko!

That will open you to lawsuit. Once Fred had changed his receipt number, you have no ground to continue it. Consider that there are still some Fred customers who get the old receipt number before he changed it. They will use the wrong number to contact him. After Fred changed his receipt, any call to your place will be considered an honest mistake. Fred's lawyer will salivate if you keep playing your stunts.

Re: your commentary after the first story, I guarantee that the manager really did say "Let's go to the office and TALK about it" instead of giving up the game by saying "let's go watch the video." Nobody knows how to call Karens on their BS like retired cops or store managers and, with both powers combined, that store manager was nigh unstoppable.

The wrong number story and the business's refusal to change their stationery reminds me of something I did several years ago. My current employer used to be a slightly smaller company before it was sold off a couple of years ago. The company that purchased it purchased other small companies in different regions of the U.S. that were similar to ours, and we have since been rebranded as a major company. When it was under the old name, we had a few satellite offices in different parts of my state, including one I worked at for a couple of years. When our contract with a client where we were located (we're a consultant for the local government) wasn't going to be renewed, the office was closed. We still had two boxes of envelopes that had the satellite office's address on them. A couple of days before we closed the office, I took a few sheets of small address labels; the kind used for return addresses, and using MS Word, printed out the main office's address on them. I applied the labels to the envelopes, making sure to cover up all of the old address, in between other tasks. I placed those envelopes in the supply room and when I checked on them on occasion, I noticed they were going down, so I knew they were being used. Those label sheets probably cost 10 cents each, the amount of toner used maybe 2 cents. I would have changed the letterhead as well, but it didn't look right. I think we only had half a box of letterhead. We just tossed it out.

Woooooooow....... I commend the guy getting the art calls. Long story short is my grandparents had a home phone with 1 and Advanced Auto Parts had the same number but ended with 4. So my grandparents got some "is this Advanced Auto Parts" calls. My grandparents would just say "no this is a home phone you called" and things would go on. I picked up one of them calls and figured I'd screw with them and asked whats up and they asked how much brakes where. Well I quickly said that the computers are down for some reason and said that they'd have to come in.

Story number 2 reminded me of a situation I had once. We had lived in a small town for several years and a new pizza place down the street had opened up. Unfortunately, their phone number was 1 digit off from ours and we started getting rude people trying to order a pizza, after I had told them they dialed the shop number wrong. After about a month of this, I went to the pizza place to talk to the owner. I told him what had been happening and he said "There's nothing I can do about it as I've ordered a year's worth of take out menus, flyers, and newspaper ads, so you'll just have to deal with it." I asked if he was sure that's how he wanted to handle this and was told to leave, if I wasn't ordering a pizza. Well, I decided on the way home on how to "deal" with it. I started taking pizza orders and promoting things that they didn't have on their menu. That went on for about three months, before the place closed down. I wish I had had the guys number to ask him how my "dealing with it" worked for him.

We had the "Fred" problem when we got our home number in 1996. It used to belong to a realty company. I told callers that it was not a business any longer. Most people were cool, but a few of them were Karens or Kens and would yell at me. I finally found out that an independent phone book company had it and I called them. It was a hassle because it seems no one threw theirs away and would use it. I finally got the company to delete it from the book, but I still got calls until we let go of the land-line in 2017. It was such a hassle. And hint for OP on the hospital story: DoorDash is your friend. My husband, a year ago this week, spent little over a week (with 4 of the days in ICU) in the hospital. He HATED the food. One night he called me and told me he was depressed because the food was awful. I called the nurse's station and was told I could have food delivered. So, I Door Dashed him a Ruben Sandwich and fruit. He called me and thanked me profusely. So...yeah, if you're stuck again, get delivery. I know they do grocers for your cereal and milk. :)

I knew a Fred. His liquor store had my phone # w/two digits reversed. Tried talking to him-he told me to drop dead. Started telling caller that he didn't have what they wanted but another liquor store did and gave them the address. A year later I went to that other store and asked them if they had an increase in their sales. They did. And then I told them why. The owner laughed so hard and then gave me a free bottle of wine.

So op in the second story is lucky as hell the owner didnt press charges as legally speaking a landline is public information due to the readily available sources of the information to the public. The OP not only committed extortion, but also a corporate sabotage by impersonating the business owner of the story and maliciously caused him to loose money and customers. Both of which are felonies which could have easily been avoided by simply going down to your phone service provider and requesting a number change. Also the reason he didnt have a leg to stand on is due to phone numbers being public information just like house addresses and ip addresses, the harrassment angle would have also only lost op money in the end because of that as well.

I had a similar story to the Expo For Art, this happened back in the 1980's before cell phones. My home number ended in 5400 and one common practice companies would do is give out a certain number they wanted as their own. We started getting endless phone calls from people wanting Circuit City which had a similar number but ended in 5444. Most people would just request a new number, but I liked mine. I started asking people where they got this number and they said the yellow pages. After that I proceeded to call the company and complain that needed to correct the mistake. Well this never happened (over 6 months) and I was joking around with a friend that was visiting about the endless calls when the phone rang, I answered CC, well needless to say I'd put them on hold, then wait for them to hang up. Eventually I got more creative with my replies and really acted like a disgruntle employee, I worked retail so I knew what you not supposed to do and did it all. After about a month the number of calls decreased dramatically and eventually stopped all together.

My husband and I had a phone number for some years, then, out of the blue we started getting calls for a beauty shop. Some people just wouldn't accept they had misdialed. One woman called me 10 times before I convinced her that pushing redial wouldn't get a different outcome and she would call me every time. She needed to dial the number to get a new outcome. I put on our answering machine that this was not a beauty shop and that their number was ***-****. I still got calls asking why they weren't answering their phone. Were they taking an early day? The owner called and wanted to know why her beauty shop phone was going to someone's house. One day, the owner even called and asked for someone. I told her that she had misdialed. She wanted to know exactly who the f-word I was and why I was answering the phone in her shop. I just disconnected and thankfully, if she called back she dialed correctly. She called one day and threatened to call the police if I didn't stop switching her shop phone so she wasn't getting all her calls! I had it after that. First, I called and complained to the phone company and insisted they change her number free of charge. The Beautician had been onto them also and convinced them I should change my number, not her, even though I had that number for some years. It took them 3 weeks to change the number. During that time, I made appointments for everyone who asked. 4:30 Friday. This was 1/2 hour before closing for the shop. I never got another call, threat or rude caller after 2 weeks of this and never after the new number was connected. It was a pain in the ass to give everyone a new number (this was in the 80s when cell phones were the size of bricks and way too expensive for most people). I never heard if all the 4:30 appointments ever caused the woman problems, but I hope they at least taught her to be nicer to strangers and not to threaten people who have done nothing wrong (until then).
