It’s a powder dye that is mixed with water. I use it to stain leather edges in leathercraft and thought it would be useful to use on my shoes. Now I put it in a refillable marker. I think I used black in the video. Essentially just an edge dye. Here is the powder there is also dark brown and golden brown: www.abbeyengland.com/powder-dye-black-d10431
Just picked up my first pair of RM Williams comfort craftsman boots two days ago. When buying them the store salesperson noted that I need to use the RM Williams brand of polish as that is 'natural' and doesn't contain any alcohol, and other brands of polish may damage the leather. I've been using Saphir cream/wax polish for the last year or so on my work shoes and they've been great. Do you think think that Saphir polish & wax is safe for use on my RMW boots?
I wouldn’t say you need to use the RM Williams shoe polish. It could just be a extra up sell from the sales person. Most shoe polishes are going to contain chemicals in them and probably cheap brands might use alcohol (so do avoid). Saphir should be fine to use, they are a well trusted brand even on high quality shoes. That’s what I use on my RMs and haven’t had any trouble. You won’t damage the leather. Make sure not to overly apply wax, a layer or two will be fine. It’s not overly necessary to apply a wax but you can if you like. Depending how the shoe is going I don’t often polish. I tend to condition them with the artisans sons leather condition as that gives it a nice shine and is natural. I spoke to Jarrad the owner of Artisans Sons on a podcast episode. Also avoid the RMs leather conditioner it’s very poorly made and it’s very thick for a conditioner. Artisans sons leather conditioner is a very good alternative to use for conditioning. I hope this helps :)
@@Admin-lm7bw does that include the conditioner, as they state it’s all natural and that is what I have but I’d be happy to change if it’s going to damage the leather. Not that it has damaged any of my boots in the past 45years.
@@johnhenson4054 Hi John, personally I only use Artisan's Son Wax Based Products. There are some others out there, however love the Artisan's Son Wax based conditioner too much. You should give it a go. Hope this helps.
Love Artisan's Son Leather Care products. Products which outperform the rest of the chemical infused rubbish out there today. Would defiantly recommend them to anyone who has never heard of them or used their products before.
Thank you, I got my shoe trees from Trimly. I have the older design boot trees but they have a updated design: trimly.com.au/products/premium-boot-trees-new?variant=42108512665825¤cy=AUD&cmp_id=17862645772&adg_id=&kwd=&device=m&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADQ7RHvKdyiowWbJ7kVzWM6umKvs-&gclid=Cj0KCQjw-ai0BhDPARIsAB6hmP6dqDoUwUt_568vXM_7lqrGV1xyD0sMD6WtXr5oACDOCMBjxmSNTfIaApRZEALw_wcB
What’s your opinion on the stockman boot polish from R.M? I did initially want to purchase Saphir but not sure what colours will match with the boots I have. I have the boots in all of the colours: Black Chestnut Dark Tan Rum Cognac Mahogany Any pointers?
I used the stockmans polish before using Saphir. What I didn’t like about it was it left a matte finish and I prefer a shiny finish. That is the main reason I switched and that was more personal preference. That’s a good collection of RMs you have, in terms of getting the correct colours, for the black and chestnut you can get black and dark brown in Saphir and those colours match pretty well. With the other colours I know Saphir has a large range of different colours to try and get different shoe colours. What you could do is before you buy some Saphir polish (this is moreso online as opposed to in store) just ask if it’s not the correct colour can I send it back, just so you’re not stuck with a mismatched shoe polish.
Hi Marcus, if you have a black pair you can do all the same steps except change the dark brown shoe polish to Black. All the products (besides the shoe polish) can be found in Artisans Sons Heritage Leather Care Kit www.artisansson.com/product-page/heritage-leather-care-kit I used and the steps I took were: - Brush with horse hair brush - Dampened Cloth with water - Artisans Sons Natural Leather Soap - Artisans Sons Heritage Leather Oil - Artisans Sons Leather Conditioner - Saphir Beauté Du Cuir in colour Dark Brown (It does come in Black)
Yeah I definitely would Artisans Son over the RM Conditioning. The conditioning from RM is very thick for a conditioner whereas Artisans Sons is a more smoother and is made with all natural ingredients (I’m unsure what RM ingredients are).
@@Josephmedcalf0 thanks that's interesting. I bought rm Williams stuff already so am planning on using it up. They said in the store to me the leather conditioner is animal lard - does that sound right to you?
@@normalguy7898 Thank you I’m glad you found it interesting. In regards to the RM leather conditioner I can’t comment on if there is animal lard in it. There probably is because you can use animal lard for conditioner. When I spoke to Jarred the man who owns Artisans Sons he spoke about the bad viscosity in leather conditioner particularly from RM Williams. Conditioner should have a somewhat thick viscosity (not too thick but not too thin), the RM Williams conditioner is quiet slimy and he explained why that isn’t good (I can’t remember his full words though as it was sometime ago). He can explain it if you message him. His advice was anything that comes in a plastic tube claiming to do it all you should be weary of. We did talk about viscosity in a podcast episode (Episode 20) it can be found on Spotify or Apple Podcasts. But in short, if that’s what you have the RM conditioner, it will be fine. However, I would consider getting some of Artisans Son leather conditioner (I’m not being paid to say that) I use it on my RMs and it’s such a good product and reasonably priced and you’ll notice a difference :)
