Ever wondered how to remove and install a rear shock on an R Nine T? Well this is the video for you.
My bike is a 2015 model which doesn't have the charcoal canister so installation may vary slightly from bike to bike. The exhaust system I'm running didn't need to be removed for installation either.

Thx. Great tutorial. Did it the same way. Even could remove the old shock without removing the wheel.

Change the Shock on a BMW R Nine T.... as above, but wheel NOT removed. I used a scissor and hydraulic jack to do it. Undid the bolts, jacket the back end up so wheel just off ground, removed shock bolts. Then slowly jacked the bike up so the swing arm would lower and the top of the shock would clear the underside of the subframe with the plastic tray on. When installing the new shock, i used a thin long screwdriver to make it easy to put the top bolt in through frame and new shock eyelet. Then used the scissor jack to gently lower it back down to align the lower eyelet for the bolt to pass through easily. In theory i could have done it all with just a scissor jack, if i had some block to stand it on, so that it could raise the bike high enough, like the hydraulic jack i used.

Just what I was looking for, installing a Nitron shock soon and its nice to have a heads-up so no surprises. Ohlins looks real good ! Thanks for the video btw 👍

Just a tip here, when I re-fit the shock, a Wilbers on mine, I put the Loctite into the nut on the upper and into the threaded part of the swing arm for the lower, and grease the unthreaded part of both bolts, that way the bolt / bush contact area is lubed and no Loctite gets into the lubed area. To me it's a really bad idea to have either end of the shock running dry metal to metal.

Great video Scott! I have upgraded to Tractive X-Perience-PA shock and Adreani Cartridges on the front BUT I'm still trying to find a way to increase ground clearance. Any advice would be much appreciated! thanks
@thatrninetguy
@thatrninetguy Год назад
Thanks, Jaime. Mate, the easiest thing to increase ride height (and therefore ground clearance) would be to go for a 190 rear tyre. You COULD squeeze a 190 on a 5.5" stock rim but it would change the profile into something too triangular. I found myself a wheel from an R1200S and chucked on a 190/55R17, and this increased ride height by about 5mm - 13/64", in case you use that silly imperial measuring system. Worked a treat. Hope this helps you, mate.

Scott, can you make a video on how do you setup your whole suspension front and rear with the current setup? Also curious to hear from you how much better new rear shock is in terms of riding experience and what exactly you're missing from the stock one.
@thatrninetguy

HI, Kris007. I have a track day coming up soon so I'll do a video on the setting up of the suspension then. I think it'll be interesting to see what needs to change from buying it off the shelf but "setup" to your weight and riding style. Stay tuned!

Curious what was the reason for this change? Was the bike handling badly in corners, bumpy please explain And the cost if you don’t mind. Beautiful Bike by the way
@thatrninetguy
@thatrninetguy 3 года назад
G'day, Sam. Yeah, the stock shock is a bit stiff and unforgiving. Doesn't make for a smooth ride at all. The confidence the Ohlins gives you is great - you can really push hard and not have to worry about getting launched out of the saddle. I think it ran me about $1600 here in Australia.

@deanjones150 Год назад
Hi mate. Back again with a question about your suspension if you get the time. Simply, did you consider the Wilbers offerings and if so what were your reasons for going this way? I’m inclined to go Ohlins because I like the brand and - maybe pointlessly - like the idea of matching forks while Wilbers forks seem to cost significantly more for the 9T. (keen on entire fork replacement over internals only.)
@thatrninetguy
@thatrninetguy Год назад
Heya, Dean. Yes, I did look at Wilbers and went close to going that way but the numerous excellent reviews of the Ohlins sent me down that path. I only went for Ohlins internals for the front as I thought going the full Monty with total replacement was a bit pointless as it's only the guts of the shock that does the work. But dude, if it was you that pulled the 50 million in the lotto the other day, go nuts! BTW, where are you located? BNE? SYD? MEL?
@deanjones150
@deanjones150 Год назад
Wasn’t me. I’m using the sentimental value of my bike and the fact I’ll own it for as long as it’s rideable to justify the expense! Thanks for all the feedback. All the best for now!

Hi Scott, So did you get your front fork cartridges installed by a professional in a shop, or did you get it done your self? I know the rear shock installation is easy but the the fork internals not so much. I plan to do Nitron both front and rear. I know I can do rear shock my self, that’s why I am watching this vid, but front, well maybe. Just need some special tools, right.
@thatrninetguy
@thatrninetguy 3 года назад
Hi, Marko. Yes, I had the job done by an Ohlins qualified technician. There are some specific tools required for the job so I decided against doing the job myself. Cost me a few hundred bucks.

Hey, Rajinder. The ride was so much better - no more getting blasted out of the saddle when you hit a bump. Re. the front forks, shortly after I put in some Ohlins cartridges that were set up for my weight. It rides really, really well now.
