I saw Sawallisch the first time as I was a child in Munich at the Opera for children at the bavarian state opera!!He was a very good musician!!I miss him every day!
Out of interest I found the cd of this performance in my collection.🇸🇾🇸🇾It is on EMI,and recorded in Suntory Hall.I put it on,and of course the sound was better through my hi fi,there was something missing, the pictures!.It makes such a difference to see the orchestra, conductor, and organist playing there hearts out.Enormous thanks to the person who put this piece of video on utube, and Richard Strauss for composing it.
I have the CD from this recording and I am very happy to discover this video. Thank you for uploading this video. I moved to Philadelphia in 1993, coincidentally the same year Sawallisch became the music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra and the year this exquisite performance was recorded in Suntory Hall. Every concert at Philadelphia with Sawallisch conducting was a special occasion for us. He is a conductor best be heard live. Full of fire, elegance, power, intelligence, passion and surprises! And the mighty Philadelphia Orchestra responded. Yes, I still miss him very much too as Gene commented below.
I still miss Sawallisch. He was an un underappreciated podium giant on this side of the Atlantic until he arrived in Philadelphia,, and remains among the small handful of great Richard Strauss conductors. MANY thanks for posting this video. After having owned the commercial recording since its original issue, it's gratifying to see the performance that was used as the basis for the commercial recording.
