R50 Front Struts Explained! Lift Springs, Stock Springs, and Extended Travel.

Today I explain what struts to use with your R50 Pathfinder or QX4. Stock equivalents like KYB and Rancho are popular and come with their own complications but at a generally cheap price. Or, for someone who wants a premium choice, the OME struts have more travel and very nice ride quality, mitigating top out and replacing some of the down travel that is lost with lift springs.
Many/some people are satisfied with their KYB's, Rancho's, or Gabriels even on the stiffest AC coils (myself included) or the less stiff OME coils, and this remains the most popular route for lifted pathfinders. However, the OME struts are the ultimate option, provided they don't cause your CV axles to bind. Whether building up your R50 Pathfinder or QX4 for overland or offroading, I'm confident that you can find a quality spring/strut setup that suits your needs.
With struts and springs, you want to carefully consider the needs of your own vehicle- I am only going over basic concepts here, and am not guaranteeing a specific outcome. See more notes and links below
**Note on the math: Extended travel of the strut is 0.75-1" depending on which stock strut you're comparing to. At a minimum, you gain 0.75" of down travel. The same goes for the collapsed length math. You might gain or lose some up travel compared to stock.
Here are the promised strut links:

These are all 4WD part numbers for R50 Nissan Pathfinders, 2WD fitment not guaranteed. You are responsible for your purchases and vehicles, I'm just a guy on youtube. It is my assumption that these part numbers work for QX4's of the same year, as this is almost universally the case for other QX4 suspension and drivetrain pieces.

In this video, I am going over the basic concepts of struts! The exact math of how the OME struts compare to your stock year specific strut will vary a little, so bear with me. It's up to you to determine what kind of performance you need from a strut/spring combo, and I do not guarantee a specific outcome. I'm just a dude on RU-vid :). Check out the description for more details, and thanks for watching! -Tyler

The OME struts I searched on the web all show images of a strut with the bottom mounting to a lower control arm instead of the knuckle. Are those just generic photos? Or am I missing something.

Likely generic photos (and there’s more than one type of strut). If the part number is right it should fit

Thanks for the video, Tyler. Quick question, why the '98 KYB struts can not be installed on a '03 model, if the OME has the same part number across the line?
@208Tyler
@208Tyler 2 года назад
They can be installed- they’ll physically fit, but they won’t sit at the same ride height. Different engine and front end weights should require different struts to handle best. OME has the same springs for sure across all the years, but I’m not sure if they use the same front struts across the line- they for sure have two different part numbers for rear shocks. Im guessing as an aftermarket/suspension lift company they weren’t as privy or careful with research and development. KYB has all of its options for a reason.

@@208Tyler Thanks for the reply Tyler. The OME has just one type of front struts, this is why I was asking if I can fit the KYB for a '98 model to a '03 model.

Tyler wonder if you can help me. I am about to do emu coils front and rear with their front struts on my 02qx4. Will also add 1.5” spacers. I want a soft ride! Not a lot of extra weight will be with me when wheeling. Which EMU sprigs do you suggest? The medium duty or light?
@208Tyler
@208Tyler Год назад
Their struts are now discontinued. I would not stack spacers on top of OME front springs. I’d do the OME 2928 in the front but maybe do a dobinson rear coil. The OME rear coils are a little light and it would save you money from ordering spacers. If you have to go OME in the read, go with the medium duty. If ride quality is the ultimate concern, go with the lighter spring options. I would avoid spacers in the front no matter what

Hey Tyler, I see that the OME struts are discontinued. Do you know of any alternative options for extended travel struts? I'm running KYBs right now on my '97 QX4 with Ironman springs and just upgraded my tires to 285/70/17 (with a lot of trimming) but it seems that now when I go over speed bumps I'm getting some knocking. Wondering if if the struts are topping out.
@208Tyler

There’s some stuff from Australia that should work. There’s a guy called Bud Nixon on RU-vid who used tough dog struts, they’re extended length. He’s in some of the R50 Facebook groups and has a wright up there, his name is Nik Orlov. Here’s what he used, I think: part number BDS4024 from tough dog. @208Tyler

This is the most common way to lift the R50, old man emu and a KYB strut is a great combo! Shouldn’t top out unless you really hit a hard bump or pothole. I’ve had several friends use this combo

I have a 96 pathfinder with the electronic adjustable struts operated by a switch in the cab that can be stiffer in 'sport' mode, or softer in 'comfort' mode. I love these struts, but they are coming up on 25 years old and probably need to be replaced, but aren't visibly leaking yet. They are KYB struts, and are no longer offered anywhere in the united states that I have found to date. If you ever come across a source for these PLEASE shoot me a message and let me know! These were only offered in the 96 models in the states, but in Japan they were offered all the way up until 2004. I may see if I can order some in Japan and have them shipped over, because Its a gimmick I really like and use often for super bumpy gravel roads with tons of wash-boarding.
@208Tyler
@208Tyler 3 года назад
Wow. I noticed that disclaimer on the 96 strut offerings in my research, but ignored it as I’ve never really seen or heard of it. Only line I would have on a part like that is stumbling across it at a junkyard. Looking for 96 LE I take it?
@Grey-Troll
@Grey-Troll 3 года назад
@@208Tyler The one I have is a SE and also comes with more adjustable seats, and has unique headrests for the front two seats. Not sure if this was a custom order vehicle or not. The switch is just to the right of the rear windshield wiper switch, so if you don't see that, it doesn't have the electronic suspension. You can also tell by the top of the strut towers as it has a shaft extending up past where the normal strut does with a 3 wire plug coming off of it. The rear shocks also have wires coming out of the side near the top mounting bolt. Ill have to look at my parts truck (98 LE which does not have these) to see if the wiring harness exists to add them, and I can let you know if you're interested in adding these if by chance you come across a source for them. Hopefully they aren't prohibitively expensive to get from Japan.

2nd gen frontier owner here. New to the off-roading/lift game. I was wondering why you roll with the stock struts? I have stock struts and a spacer lift up front and was considering bilstein 4600’s. I may just say screw it if you are running a stockie. I don’t off-road nearly as much as you. I don’t think I need em. So many guys are just replacing shocks just because they think they have to. Great vids Nissan bro.
@208Tyler
@208Tyler 3 года назад
If you compare the two systems, you’ll notice that R50 Pathfinder struts are much different than your 2nd Gen frontier equipment. Mine are essentially car suspension, yours are a much more competent system and will likely require aftermarket solutions. 2nd Gen frontiers are nice though, I’d definitely consider moving into one after the pathfinder.
@AK-ky3ou

@@208Tyler what do you mean? Are you saying the stock kyb shocks on a frontier are worse for off-road than the kyb’s on the r50?
@208Tyler
@208Tyler 3 года назад
No. I’m saying you have an entirely different suspension setup. Even though they go by the same name (strut, or more often coilover) they’re nothing alike. R50’s have car suspension, but you have much stronger suspension that is easier to modify. My understanding is that you have to swap the entire coilover assembly to lift the front end, but I’m not a D40 expert. I just wouldn’t use my video about an entirely different suspension system to make inferences about your frontier.
@AK-ky3ou
@AK-ky3ou 3 года назад
@@208Tyler you don’t have to swap the entire coil over on the frontier, you can buy lift springs and run stock struts. I get what you’re saying them being different plats. Springs are a subjective choice, there’s not a “best” spring. They all have drawbacks. The highest lifting coils are the AC coils, but better riding options like OME and Dobinson are also good choices. When I was on 9449’s and AC coils, I had the rake (front end lower than the rear end) measured at 1.25-1.5”, which visually looked OK but I often wished it was a little more level. More than 2” of a difference is remarkable, considering that 1) you have a RWD, your front end is lighter and should get more lift than me, and 2) your rear springs are softer, so you should be getting less lift than me. The rear spring install is hard to screw up, the only real point of failure besides the springs themselves is your struts. If the struts are properly installed, I’d return the springs. Especially if you have before and after measurements I would hope you can return and refund your purchase through 4x4parts
