Well, this was supposed to be more about older mechanical things, but sometimes you have to do things to support those close to you. A friend and ex-neighbour has a R56 Mini One that the 'death rattle'. So I decided to take on the challenge! Needless to say this was my first time and the usual frustrations of working on something new as you work out the challenges of getting to that one last bolt/screw.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy this video, there will be more frustration in following videos as I try to complete this challenge!
Please note if you want to take this on, not all cam locking tools are made equal!

Hello good day ! so you replaced the timing chain, can you explain me how exactly the engine runs before ?? I have a problem ,, no motor check , nothing but when the the engine is warm (warm-driven) it starts shaking in the idle! and it runs a bit weak , runs not smooth as my 2nd mini usually does. so my problems comes only at normal operating temperature ! thanks for your advices

This timing chain was replaced as the engine had the ‘death rattle’ on not just cold start up, but on idle. You could have a number of issues, if you have no codes, that could be a good thing. Have you got a code reader to test it?? Could be any of: VVT solenoids need cleaning Bypass valve in the valve cover Air intake issue, possible air leak Or possibly something g to do with your o2 sensors. If you can code it this would be very helpful. Saves wasting time looking at things it won’t be. Cleaning solenoids is easy though. Is yours the turbo or non turbo version?

...you're doing all right there....these modern engines are bloody awful to work on....give me an A Series engine every time!!

Thank you, it was almost a nightmare to be honest, but all is well. I should be able to complete this video over the weekend. I think it is like anything that you start out doing that you have never done before, there are so many unknowns. While it was a frustrating process, looking back, I would do it again especially as I now know what it entails!

I’ve read comments about quality and quality of engine oil and poor frequency of oil changes being a cause . Maybe high engine revs on a cold engine as well. But is the quality of those plastic chain guides the major cause ?
@hyphensclassics
@hyphensclassics 3 года назад
Hi David, not from what I know. The plastic seems like an odd material, but having a regular oil service keeps them from going brittle. As the oil gets old it stops lubricating as well. Mini recommended a 10,000 service interval (from memory), but they need to be between 3,000-4,000. Arguably maybe there is a better product out there other than the plastic used, but I have no knowledge of the different plastics available for such a purpose. High engine revs when cold, certainly if you have older oil it will take longer to get to the areas needed and so that is never a great idea. Certainly the replacement engines they used where better than these engines.

hi, looking to change mine very soon... is the FEBI 48387 timing chain kit compatible with the N12B14 engine? R56 MINI ONE 1.4 your earliest reply would be gladly appreciated!

Hi Andrew, yes that part is suitable for the N12 engine. The OEM part for the chain itself is 11318618318. This aligns FEBI part 48387. Note this FEBI part only provides the chain, lower sprocket, tensioner, guides and crank bolt.

I liked this video very much. I'm an owner of a Mini One R56 (2009), I really love this car. After 152.000 Km the engine was generally repaired (a year ago) and after that I find a problem. When the engine is hot (a/c and traffic etc.) the engine is running as there are only three cylinders. We have changed spark plug, multipliers. I wonder if you know that is something that should have been done or changed. Really, thank you a lot

Hi There, always hard to diagnose from a few words, but the first thing is to get a basic code reader to see if the car can tell you anything. Losing power can be a number of things, if you have had the engine rebuilt recently I would hope nothing related to that. I would want to see the codes on the O2 sensors, also be good to check your coils, but if there is a misfire or cylinder not working you need to know which, then you can play around to find what it is

I had similar issues with the timing tools on my 1.6 engine. Your exhaust cam lock tool isn't quite sat correctly; you can see where the leg of the tool meets the spark plug well it's not sat flush against the rim of the well - which it should be. You'll not push it flush by hand as you're fighting the valve springs. I used a cloth (to protect the cam) and a pair of large grips / pliers to wiggle the cam whilst seating the tool in order to make the tool seat perfectly. It's awkward, particularly if your chain has stretched and your cams are out of phase with one another. If you let go of the tool before getting it bolted down the tension in the valve springs will lift it again, so you might find yourself having to go round in several cycled of wiggling cams whilst tightening down tools in order to get it all 'just right'.

Hi Ben, Thank you for your comments, I did end up checking this two or three more times and made adjustments to get it closer. The car runs well, but also then needed valve stem seals done, client has not gone for that fix.

@@hyphensclassics yeh, it's an odd one isn't it! It took me several goes round before I was comfortable with it too. I've no doubt what you've done will be fine, having seen how far out of time my example had gone without even giving off any codes (chain stretch) they must be quite forgiving. At the point you've got the timing tools on realistically we are talking about fractions of degrees in it and I believe BMWs tech spec is 3 degrees tolerance, so she will be fine!
@hyphensclassics
@hyphensclassics 3 года назад
@@benfrancis4896 agreed, I was so nervous about it hence the multiple checks then checking again! At one point I thought I had forgotten the crank pin, so I started it all over again! I finally decided the best way was to take out the plugs and drop in lengths of wire to make sure all pistons where at the same point, then put the crank pin in, then put the cam locks on! The good news is the guy still owns the car and it is still running fine, so all good. Although you can tell that these engines need a lot more love and attention than the manual suggests

@@hyphensclassics ah don't talk to me about the crank pin. I had to grind mine down before it would fit in the box. Joys of cheap tools. This vid wasn't meant for public consumption, was for my father and brother to show them the fault on the vehicle, so excuse the quality and language (but thought you might like it). I did a quick visual check for them just using the part markings on the cams and you can see how far the exhaust cam had advanced over it's like (86k miles). It wasn't giving off codes at this point albeit the engine was a little loud and lacked performance as it got hot. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--eN8yYHmU3Q.html

@@benfrancis4896 now that is a) like you said, obviously out and b) obviously the discolouration shows the problem with these engines, maintenance cycle is not correct. Nothing wrong with your video, makes perfect sense for someone who wants to check their timing. And yes had the same with my crank pin. The first round I had pulled the sump so it was easy to get in and out, however the next attempts were after the sump was back on and so had to grind away a bit so it would get into the hole! Yes love these knock off parts/tools made to some spec, of which will remain misterious

How many miles had it done before this happened, roughly?
@hyphensclassics
@hyphensclassics 4 года назад
Hi Jason, The car had done around 84k miles. However, I had no access to the cars maintenance history and from what I saw the maintenance was being a bit neglected. This could be a contributing factor.
