Great review of the R7 John, with such a great variety of lenses! Also great advice on photography and equipment. Thanks so much for sharing!👏

Bill - thank YOU for letting me share. James has been using the R5 with the 25mm and 100 Laowa, and today with the Canon 100mm EF lens. I am really looking forward to his next videos with newer tech. It is an awesome camera and it has its limitations just like every other bit of kit. I am really glad I have been renting to try so many lenses. I have a few more I want to try as well. Thank you, thank you Bill. 🙏🤗💖

I have the R5, R6 and now the R7 and I love shooting wildlife and landscapes. I have put the RF 100-500 on all of them and i absolutely love the R7 with the RF 100-500. That combination excites me and takes great photographs. I hardly use my R5 now for outside but I do carry it to have a spare body around. R7 is a wonderful camera and recommend it highly....

Frederick, I couldnt agree with you more. I LOVE that lens on the R7. It is lightweight and SUPER sharp. I was out with the R5 last evening for the first time in a really lone time. @@frederickmcdonald6636 That is SOOOO awesome. I am a musician - my life long dream, what I worked for and what I aspired to was writing and performing. That creation is what made me happy. Up until about three years ago, I was still performing live and it was awesome. I still write music and release it online, but photography allows me to create in another way. Instead of preforming on stage, I get to present my art on RU-vid - and that is awesome too! Every now and again, I get a new lens or new body, or pick up an old body I have not used in a long time, and that thrill comes back all over again. The last recording I released, I was excited about, then after I released it, thought it was terrible. Then, I pulled it up on Spotify on a whim and fell in love with it all over again. Don't worry about being at photography, just having fun and presenting what you envision as an extension of your art!!! 🤗💖

One thing about Canon and all the lenses I have used - all thier older EF native lenses work PERFECTLY adapted to the new R bodies. My 600 F4 III is an EF lens. My 70-200 that I did my last wedding with (I HATE shooting events) is an EF. They work every bit as well as the RF glass. My 7d mk2 was getting high on shutter count so got an r7, still paired with the ef100-400 v2 for butterflies, birds, flowers…. Never really needs to come off. Still experimenting with the different focus types and have my share of misses, often user error, but when it hits it has amazing sharpness so getting that one perfect shot out of the 10 in that series and deleting the rest is exactly on point.

Awesome!!! The older Canon lenses adapt flawlessly to the new bodies - another of the many things I love about Canon. I keep my shutter speed down and shoot in bursts - too many to go through otherwise. And.... how many amazing shots do you need to share? Found your statement realistic! Could you differentiate between EF 100-400 version || F4 -5.5 and RF 100-500 lens, which you mentioned? Which is sharper? An extra 100 mm of RF is not a concern.

I have not used the version two of the EF 100-400. I have version one and I am happy with how lite it is, the AF works perfectly and I get many awesome images that make me happy. I prefer my old EF 100-400 over the new one that I don't think is worth the what ever it is they charge. Others will disagree. The Sharpest lens I have used hands down is the RF 100-500 - that is AMAZING. I still plan on buying it at some point, but buying Nikon lenses at the moment. I had it in my cart (I do really want it), but it was an international model ...... ah well. The other thing I will say if shooting wildlife - the more reach you have the better. 🤗❤🙏

@@vimalneha I am currently and started with Nikon (I use both systems). I switched when the R5 came out - Sony left me flat even though I tried them several times. Now that I have used both systems and have the Z9.... I will say without hesitation that the Canon system is still light years ahead of what the Z9 offers - no question. I love the images I get with the Z9 and the old Nikons as well, but for tech and eye tracking that we spend the money on - Canon. The R7 outperforms the Z9 and at a 5th of the price. For me, I have opted to buy the 500 PF for my Z9 with a 1.4 tele. I will wait for the 800 PF if or when it hits the market. I will also get the Canon R8 when it hits the market which I think will be well before anything new comes out from Nikon. I also have the Canon RF 100-500 coming in as a rental later this week. Such an amazing set up!! I am actually excited about having that lens again on the R7!! 🙏🤗❤

Did you have softness issues with any of the EF lenses which did not happen on a Native EF/EF-S body? I'm having this issue with mine. The cam locks focus on subject or eye. The images look soft at 100% until I run them through a noise filter (NoNoise AI in ON1 Photo RAW). Then, they sharpen up fairly nicely from the noise filter alone. I don't believe it's the lens, but rather the high megapixels of the sensor amplifying noise. Even ISO 1000 or so benefits from running through a noise filter, and sharpens the result. I'm using cRAW for everything. I tried a Sigma 18-300 Contemporary, and a Canon EF 70-200 f/4L USM (gen1), with basically the same result. The Sigma might have actually looked a bit better. Both of these lenses performed magically on my 7dMarkII. Sharpness was never a complaint. Any ideas on how to mitigate this? I swear mine has worse performance than the original digital rebel.

The BEST lens I have found for the the R7 is the RF 100-500.... and my EF 70-200. My Vi 100-400 also works really well but not as sharp as the the newer RF lenses. For me, I did get sharp shots with the Sigma but not as consistent as the native Canon lenses and not even close to how sharp the newer RF lenses are. It could be the higher megapixel of the sensor in such a small space. To process I use only Adobe Lightroom and I like the noise filter in there. I also try NOT to let the ISO get too high like I do with the R3 or R5. 🙏🤗💖

@@JonnyPink65 I would assume even my ancient EF 70-200 f/4L would/should have similar optical quality to your f/2.8. I have seen some amazing images from the new RF 100-400, which is likely why I'm so frustrated by what I'm getting from known good EF lenses. If I can verify that the problem is not with the camera, the 100-400 was going to be my next pickup. I did order a cheap used RF 50mm f/1.8 STM so I can verify that an RF lens works properly. AFAIK the main thing the Canon RF/EF adapter does is move the lens further away so it matches the spacing on the older bodies. It shouldn't have an effect on image quality. Must be something about how close the RF lenses sit to the sensor. I really didn't want to have to be spending $600+ on each lens to replace the ~8 EF lenses I own. Should I even be pixel peeping or worrying about softness at 100% in a nearly 7000 x 4700 image on a 1080p monitor?

@@sumdood2035 I have been shooting the RF 100-400 on the R50 and I will be shooting it on the R7 as a comparison hopefully tomorrow or later today. I rented this set up and want to play with it as much as possible. Your 70-200 SHOULD work perfectly, but..... I went out shooting with an OLD OLD OLD EF 70-300 and the photos are just terrible. The video as great. That was the first old lens I have encountered that did not translate well to the new body. That is the video that went up yesterday I think.. And if it is my R7 body, then I will find out. The 100-400 is an awesome little lens - light, takes great images and not too expensive. 💖

@@JonnyPink65 Thanks, I'll keep an eye out for your new video. My 70-200 f/4L (non IS) is apparently from 1999. It seems to work very well in one shot, single shooting mode, but when I go into servo AF, it, along with my Sigma 18-300 contemporary likes to continually find the subject in a bird on a branch as the branch itself. Even with it set to initial priority, it usually won't even find a small bird. Instead, it locks onto the larger branch below. I went to a local botanical garden today and was not very happy with the results on either of these lenses. I took a video screencap of my photo review process if you wanted to see what I'm going through. The only RF lens I have is the 50mm f/1.8 STM. Obviously it's no good for wildlife, but maybe I'll get some street photography in, to compare image quality. Maybe I'll rent the RF 100-400. I have about 2 weeks until my return window expires on the R7.

Forrest - I get it and it did not make sense to me, but it did make a difference. If I did buy that lens, I would shoot it constantly and have fun with it. I really did like the light weight and was please with it overall. I was happy with all the lenses I used. It was just an observation of what it did with the ISO and how THIS camera body and sensor handles the high ISO. Not a problem and something I can work around - like the DSLR days. With other lenses, I do shoot at F8, but it did not push the ISO up so high. Maybe it was operator error...... Still an awesome low cost lens. Thank you again Forrest!! 💖🤗🙏

If the 7DmII and the D500 were considered professional cameras I think the R7 is as good or better and more advanced than those two cameras in every way that matters to me. I owned and shot with both of those cameras and I prefer the R7. I didn't expect the exact level of components that would be in the flagship and way more expensive r5. I wouldn't trade the R7 for the R5 if I was going to keep shooting it.

Forrest!!! The R7 is an amazing little camera and I am having an absolute blast shooting it. For me, I wanted the R7 for macro - prior to that, I used my M50 for macro over my R5!!! All I really care about with a camera body is am I able to me make it take the photo I want. The reason I say that it is not a pro level camera is that it has a few 'FEW" less features than the R5, R3 etc... And you are correct - in many ways as far as bird photography, it surpasses the R5 like the Nikon D500 did with other Nikon cameras. That was a beast when it came out and still holds it own to this day. IF and that is a HUGE IF, I even do another event, I will take it with my 70-200 for my distance, discrete candid shots. I have not shot anything other than this R7 since I got it and I suspect that the R5 other than video or letting James use it, will sit in the bag. There are a few things that are missing in the menu that I wish I could turn off or have more control over, but I work around that no problem. I do love it. Thank you Forrest!! 💖🤗🙏

Why ef 100 over rf 100 ?
@JonnyPink65
@JonnyPink65 Год назад
Other than the RF 100-500, it seems like Canon rushed the lenses to fill the void and just missed the mark on quality. There have been a total of two RF lenses I have liked, but I find the EF lenses, at least for me, are superior. I hated, and I mean HATED the RF 100mm. The autofocus for ME is better with the EF version. There are many out there that say I am crazy and others that agree with me. The new RF 100-400 is a budget lens in my opinion and only worth borrowing. It is really slow all the way around. My old EF version one is faster in all respects and sharper. Again, these are just my opinions based on my use and what I want from a lens and a photo. When i bought my 70-200 this past summer to replace the Nikon one I had, I bought the EF version for that very reason - it is simply a superior lens. 🤗🙏❤

If you don't like high ISO results processed in Adobe, did you ever consider that some companies have not figured out what to do with R7 raw images (yet)? There are other options. One, DPP, is even free but can handle the files. Also: Get over the idea that a camera has to do everything 'best' to be a 'professional' camera. The R7, as you mentioned, is quite good at what it was made to do. Not being best for weddings does not mean it is a piece of junk. Many of us have more than one body. That is a problem with Canons. My six since 2003 all still work and there are jobs for which the R5 is overkill.
@JonnyPink65
@JonnyPink65 2 года назад
Doug!! It is not a problem at all - I just shoot more like I used to with my D800 or older DSLRs - I just watch the ISO. I got so used to just letting the ISO go on the R5 and forgot/took for granted that the large amount of data on the small sensor (just like the 90D) has a lot more grain to it. You are correct - it is amazing at what it was meant to do and I think it is an amazing camera body. I WOULD use it for an event with a long 2.8 lens. The reason I use Lightroom is because that is what I have used for years and I am not going to change. For stuff like this, I am not going to spend the time to make sure everything is perfect like I would for other things - portraits, events..... but even those, I would have watched my ISO the whole time anyway. Additionally, as one of my friends said, most people will buy a camera like this, use it in auto, share the JPEGS, and never use even 1/10th of what a camera can do be-it it be Sony, Canon or maybe a Nikon. I LOVE the large amount of information this camera offers. Prior to this coming out and for what I want to do with a camera, my very favorite camera was the M50!!!! This is my replacement for that. For landscapes, i still reach for my old Nikon D800. No camera or lens is perfect and I just want the people who my be new to photography or just doing research to realize that. I also try to explain that a good photographer who knows how to work the light and setting can get a great shot with anything. It is the person behind the camera, not the gear. The gear does help, but you have to know how to use it. Thank you Doug!! 🤗💖🙏

I love focus peaking on my M50. Hearing that the R7 is weaker is practically a deal-breaker. Can you convince me that the R7 is worth buying?
@JonnyPink65
@JonnyPink65 2 года назад
Douglas.... please keep in mind that is my opinion and others may have a different opinion. I got the R7 mostly for macro and find the autofocus to be AMAZING for that. I did not use the M50 in autofocus so I cant compare the two. I prefer the larger sensor of the R7, but not crazy about the high ISO performance (it is not noise) from the R7 - others again will disagree. For me, it is not a big deal as I just watch my ISO and make adjustments accordingly like the old days with the advantage of the modern EVF. Until recently, I was not a fan of renting but have had so much fun using lenses that I would not have thought about. That would be one option, or you could buy an R7 and EF adapter from a retailer that will take it back if you are not satisfied. B&H, Adorama, Amazon etc.. The R7 has way more capability that the M50, so programable and the buttons are better placed. A great photographer can take a great photo with anything and the magic comes from you. Try it - it may surprise you. Nothing is perfect and I am really glad I bought it even with its quirks here and there. The focus peaking does work better with RF glass.... I hope this helps. 🙏💖🤗
@JonnyPink65
@JonnyPink65 2 года назад
PS that focus peaking issue is the ONLY down side to the R7 compared to the M50. I have only tired red but might change that......
@dougsmit1
@dougsmit1 Год назад
You blame the R7 because Adobe can not handle the files it creates. There are several other programs that do. One DPP4 is even free with the camera but there are others for those who want to pay for other features or versatility (DPP4 does not read Sony). Adobe addicts might even consider making a TIFF in a program that reads R7 and then playing with them in their Adobe of choice. It appears there is no single program that is best for everything. Thumbs down!
@JonnyPink65
@JonnyPink65 Год назад
Well, I think that the smaller sensor of the R7 is more prone to noise than the R5 at higher ISO - like an older DSLR. I would figure out where the max I would go with whichever camera I was using and not go past that. The camera will always process an amazing photo with the built in software. However, since this came out, the upgrades in Lightroom have far exceeded what it was when I put this up. I shoot a lot more high ISO photos with the R7 now, but if I can, I still keep it down. The R7 is an amazing little camera and I LOVE it. When I put my 600mm F4 on it..... WOW!!! 🙏🤗💖
