Using my Canon R7 and the RF-S 18-150 kit lens, I go on a long street photography photo walk and end up doing many other types of photography as well. This ended up being almost an 18-150 lens review. Come along with me on this photography adventure!

Nice work Phil. I swear these “kit” lenses are getting better and better. Your photos are proof of that from butterflies to wide street shots. Thanks for sharing the video.

Thank you, Adrian! It’s a great lens and most of the people that I know who are interested in the camera want to buy the body only, but I think this lens is worth it to pick up as an all around lens and for landscape photography. The close focus capability at the butterfly garden is what really surprised me about the lens.

A thorough test of this camera/lens combination in a variety of genres. I have the same combination and I am also impressed with it's versatility. I think this combination is a great light weight but capable walk-around and travel camera. Great job as always and thank you Phil, I am sure this video will help many people to decide if this is what they want.

Street photography is always tough for me to both shoot and enjoy the process. I have found if I go out to shoot architecture I will sometimes get someone walking through a shot. I have also found for my taste I like to use a 1.8 or 2.8 to remove possible distractions although sometimes you do want to show the background. Great job with these. Cheers.
@PhilThach
@PhilThach Год назад
Thank you! :) I like a bokehfied background too but, like you said, sometimes with street work, the background is important.

Great shots! When I'm walking around in the city I like shooting scenes that may have a person in them but it's less intrusive than aiming right at people where they get the feeling you're taking their picture intentionally. Sometimes there's nobody in the scenes at all and other times it might be a silhouette or someone in the distance. You can also hold your camera down at your waist and tilt the screen. Shooting silently no one even knows you're taking their picture and it looks like you're looking at your settings. Once when someone looked at me I just smiled and said it's okay! There's not even any film in here!

Thank you, Forrest! There seems to be an unlimited number of street photography styles and techniques. I do plan to get back out and do some more street photography after fall color season is over.

without getting into specs, megapixels and skills, does r10 and r7 have simillar photography skills with the same lens ?
@PhilThach
@PhilThach Год назад
Yes, but the differences involve megapixels and in body image stabilization so I had to break some of your rules. R7 is better, but the R10 will do just fine and as a street photography camera, it is smaller so that might be a good thing. You might even like the new R50 for street work based on its size.

Hi Phil, were you also using the R7 and 18-150 whenever you were showing your face?
@PhilThach
@PhilThach 2 месяца назад
No, as I posted on the second splash screen at around the 00:01 mark, I used the DJI Pocket 2 for vlogging. That screen goes by so fast it's easy to miss.
@Branje11
@Branje11 Год назад
I did some macro tests with my R7 and the 18-150 lens. Did you know that the maximum magnification with this lens is at 50mm. Problem is that you have to get to your subject at abour 5 cm distance.
@PhilThach
@PhilThach Год назад
That is not surprising, I know the 100-500 seems to do better at 300 mm than it does at 500. It still has plenty of magnification for butterflies even at longer focal lengths.

I’m uncomfortable aiming a camera at strangers in the street as well. I make sure the focus illuminator is turned off so they don’t see the green light shining at them.

@@PhilThach yeah when I take pictures of people, I hold the camera at my waist but the focus assist gives it away.

but you can be so noticeable with that kit, I think you should prefer more short or pancake lens with a small body
@PhilThach
@PhilThach 7 месяцев назад
Hard to find anything less conspicuous that will give you 240 mm full frame equivalent. I did not have any problems with this kit. I have had problems once while using a big white 70-200 F2.8. I enjoy photography with a variety of lenses.

@PhilThach Interesting. I had a Fuji X100f two years ago and it was really joy to use in streets. You can be hidden with it, later i had exchanged x100f with an Olympus E-M10 m3, even with it's 14-42 kit lens, it's also very little & capable toy in streets. People who you photographed can feel more comfortable i think with a small form factor camera.

Hey Phil, what happened to your R6 ? I think your crop lens street photography shots look great ! Looks like your R7 is a keeper for you . Comments ? Thanks 😊
@PhilThach
@PhilThach Год назад
I still have my R6, I have two videos completed where I use it, the first one is an indoor volleyball match where I needed low light capability more than I needed reach and the other one was a soccer match where I thought it would be fun to use the R6 and the super budget 100-400 lens. Thank you for the nice comment! The R7 is definitely a keeper but so is the R6, I have no plans to get rid of the R6 until maybe they make an R6ii. 😀

Been out 3 times with the R7 and have not been able to get sharp photos. I have no clue what is wrong but about to return it. Not a good experience so far. Been reading and see others have had the same problem so looks like some of the R7s are lemons
@PhilThach
@PhilThach Год назад
That is very surprising, neither Heather nor I have had any problems. I would suggest switching to servo auto focus instead of single auto focus if you haven’t already. I’m sorry you are having problems and hope you are able to get them squared away.
