Jesse Bannister has an Indian Mother who is half Tamil, half Goan. Jesse was raised by his British Father in Tottenham, London where he became part of the West Indian community. Having seen Ravi Shankar in 1987, aged 15, on TV on Network East on a Tuesday at 2am, Jesse had the urge to play Indian music. He bought himself a cheap sax and taught himself, until in 1991 he met Ustad Dharambir Singh MBE, his first Indian music teacher. Jesse has also learnt form Maestros Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty, Pandits Rajan and Sajan Mishra and currently from Pandit K. Sridhar.
Bannister is a unique musician and is among the world’s leading Indian saxophonists.
As a composer he has worked and composed for The Liverpool Philharmonic, The City of London Sinfonia and The Halle Orchestra. Bannister is a leading light in cross cultural music work.
Bannister has built a strong reputation as a performer, producer, composer and educator, sustaining a unique and progressive career over 4 decades. He has pushed the boundaries of traditional and contemporary forms and left a legacy of knowledge with his students, that include many national award winners.
