Thanks Dave yeah it was good to get out and have a decent result for a changed. I bagged about 50 bunnies that trip and the rifle performed faultlessly. Hopefully out again next couple of days mate.
@@davidsanders3114 I agree Dave it is good to see so many but the farmer doesn't think so 😂 as for rabbit 3 times a day🤔🤔 um no, I do eat rabbit just not that much 😂.
@@jimwood ah, it really annoys me that in the juristiction where I live (Norway) .22LR may be used to hunt pray "up to rabbit sized animals, but not rabbit". .22LR seems to be just perfect for the job.
@@Ruben1994OL oh really that's weird. How come you can shoot animals up to the size of a rabbit but not a rabbit? I don't understand. And yes it's a great gun for shooting I love my one.
@@jimwood The CZ457 Synthetic in 22LR is a phenomenal rifle for sure. There is a system in place where each particular animal has a minimum of joule's needed to effectively put them down humanely, which is strictly theoretical. Especially for smaller quarry they seem to have set the bar fairly high, and rabbits sit just above the joule limit that 22LR is estimated to deliver as a whole. I suppose that's where the peculiar phrasing comes from. It seems somewhat removed from reality as most modern .22LR ammo is plenty powerful enough to do the deed, but it is what it is I guess.
@@Ruben1994OL well that's interesting to know. Luckily we don't have to worry about that too much h over here unless you're deer hunting where they specify certain calibre rifles for certain types of deer. Thanks for the info and watching 👍
I absolutely love my CZ bolty in 22LR, my CZ is old school with wood stock and a Williams Receiver Peep Sight, that allows me to shoot rabbit head size groups out to 60 yards or so.
I have not witnessed rabbits in those sort of numbers since about 2006 in the UK. Then they seemed to disappear with Mixi and the other control diseases. )at least in Leics/Dernyshire). I moved to Aus in 2015 and once agin where I live the numbers are not massive. But we are having unprecedented rain at the moment so I hope the numbers will start to increase now that we have had 18 months of the wet weather. Plenty of feed for all the critters. Great content, makes me feel homesick.
Thanks Dave I'm glad you enjoyed it. And yes there are plenty of rabbits on this farm, probably the most productive farm I shoot over. Mixi hasn't been around for a while, well not what I've seen anyway. I have had other subscribers from oz say the same thing about the rabbits hopefully it will pick up for you over there. Thankyou for watching 👍
Thats not completely true, in some cases yes they probably do however where I shoot they just want them kept under control simply because of the amount of damage they cause to their land.
Good video Jim. Had a similar problem, nothing to shoot - So what you need to do is put some feeders out & wait a couple weeks because your scent would still be in the air. Once a couple weeks have past you should be able to see some more animals.
Thankyou for watching and your comment. Yes I will be doing doing future videos with the 457. My next 2 video's will be of my .223 but yes I will put together more videos with the rimfire. Love my cz 452 added a sak moderator and a Hawke dedicated subsonic scope fantastic combo also have an fac rated air rifle doing 34 ft lbs with AA diabolo field. There's nothing quite like hunting rabbits with a rifle although I love shotgunning great video thanks mate keep them coming
Thanks for your comment mate glad you enjoyed the video. I also love using my CZ such a great rifle and so accurate. I also enjoy shotgun shooting but not much about at the moment. Your rifle out sounds spot on and I also use hawke scopes, to me they are the best day scopes and not too expensive either.
@@jimwood quite right about the Hawke scopes mate I work in a gun shop and speak to Mark the rep for them really nice guy plenty of knowledge of the product at the price point I think they are unbeatable loving the videos cheers buddy stay safe and well

Thankyou mate and glad you enjoyed it. They are a great rifle to use I had forgotten just how much. Very much looking forward to the next trip. Thankyou for watching 👍
Absolutely I've been using them for years. I do like the Winchester subsonic as well but when I had my ruger 10/22 they grouped really well but wouldn't eject all the time where it was a semi auto. I've not tried them in this rifle though, might be worth a try at some point. Thanks for watching 👍
Hi Jim lovely video, brings back memories of bunny hunting when they were still about up here, hope the weather keeps warm hopefully things will get better for us. Atb muddy 😀👍
Thanks muddy and yes it brought back memories for me to from years ago. Looking forward to getting out and doing part 2 as there are plenty more to be had.
Hi mate looking at swapping to rifle from airgun as I think the rimfire is more ethical/ slightly more margin for shot placement error. Do you aim for headshots? With a 22lr is up to 50 yards about right? Cheers !
a up Jim nice vid as always and yep I've the same round here no fox anywhere like you say with lambing coming up you would have thought there would be something around well just have to wait and see what it brings when the cubs need some food
Thanks mate and yeah I can't understand it its been ages since we have seen anything. Still at least I had a good result with the bunnies. Roll on part 2
Nothing more fun than shooting a few Cotton Tails with the 22 ...... We start Lambing here next month so should be busy for a few months ... Great video Jim 👍
Hi there I bought a paid for mine in August 2021 and I'm still waiting for it I bought it threw a proper gun shop in Australia and got the extras bipod sling a scope lucky I got this video to see how it performs as I missed fox season this year good stuff looks like it works good 👍
Thanks mate glad you enjoyed the video and yes I absolutely love the rifle I will hanging onto it for quite a while. That's a long time to wait for a rifle isn't it? I would be fuming by now if I had to wait that long for it. Hopefully it will turn up soon for you.
@@jimwood Apparently it's in customs should of went to another gun shop and brought it over the counter usually takes a couple weeks I just got to pick a good scope out

It's personal preference really but these are the ones I would choose.
Hello mate nice rifle I own 3 CZ 457 my self I just pick up the new MTR with the Maners adjustable stock and I love it. Just wanted suggest you try lower scope rings they look like air gun rings. Lower set would make it much more enjoyable to shoot. Cheers
Hi yes it's a great rifle I'm very happy with it. I've tried lower rings before but couldn't get on with them. Thanks for checking out my video I will also have a look at your channel to. ATB
Fantastic shot placement. The ammo works a treat with both accuracy and knock down. Some fine shooting on your behalf that brings it all together. Wish we were aloud to use suppressors here in Aust. Loved your work
Thankyou for your comment and I'm glad you enjoyed the video. A fellow countryman of yours said about the suppressor problem over there. I really don't get what the problem is, surely a suppressed rifle is better as it won't draw attention to yourself. But I appreciate you watching my video more to come soon.
Great marksmanship brother, too see all those rabbits in daylight as well, night shooting should be explosive my mate, the local butcher would give his right arm for all those beauties 👊👍
@@earth-thrower7366 yes it is a free service because finding ground to shoot on in my area is like gold dust and people are willing to pay the land owner just to be able to get ground to shoot on. However I have people/ businesses who buy the game from me so no I'm not out of pocket. I don't charge the farmers but I do charge my buyers. Being as your such a countryman how come you don't upload video's then to show how the art of rabbiting how it used to be done? Maybe it's because you don't want people criticising your video's like you have been mine. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion there are video's on youtube I don't like but I don't waste my time commenting I just don't watch their channel anymore. So come on upload some videos onto your channel as your a professional I would enjoy watching them I'm sure !!!
@@earth-thrower7366 I upload video's because I enjoy what I do in the way of a hobby and if I could do professional pest control for a living trust me I would, but there are far too many people willing to do it for free just so they get ground to shoot on. I don't upload video's to get a well done or a pat on the back I like to share what I do because there are people who might be able to get some hints or tips from the way I do things to put towards the way they do things. I have been shooting for nearly 40 years so yes I class myself a good shot and good at what I do, however no shot is guaranteed even though I try to do it as quickly and humanly as possible. I can take good & bad comments it doesn't bother me its the snowflakes on here that absolutely have no idea what the hell they are on about that get on my nerves, so yes I do welcome comments including yours even if you think im wasting my time or going about things the wrong way. At the end of the day I'm happy with what I do and the majority of viewers seem to like it to. I wouldn't have a clue about trapping moles correctly so why not upload a video to show me and everyone else how its done. You may be surprised with the response you get.
Glad to see you using .22 instead of .17hmr I have seen in another guy's video. The .22 seems to take the buggers out more humanely (quicker). The .17hmr seemed to be rather under powered, and left nearly everyone of the rabbits flopping or running around before finally passing. Destructive pest, but no need to cause undue suffering.
I couldn't agree more there is nothing worse seeing an animal suffer even a pest. Though I try to make every shot count regarding a quick clean kill it doesn't always work out that way which is where a follow up shot is needed. I love using the .22lr and it certainly does the job as well as being the perfect tool for the job in hand. I know what you mean regarding the. 17hmr and to be honest I would rather have the .22 and the rounds are by far cheaper to. Thankyou for watching 👍
@@mawgantalling2438 that's only if you hit them in the head. The head of a standard wild rabbit is a pretty small target. Nearly every pest control video I have seen with the shooter using .17 hmr on rabbits they never get a head shot. The animal ends up flopping around, or running in circles for a few minutes. It's like using a hand gun to hunt deer. Will it work? Yes. Is humane & quick? No. The .22lr is slower, but appears to dump it's energy into the rabbit more efficiently then the .17 hmr. On squirls and other similar smaller pests the .17 hmr does a good job. In fact it nearly rips them in half. Sometimes more bullet mass is better then a higher velocity that has a higher chance of over penatrating. It's even worse when you see someone using a .17 hmr to cull foxes.
@@williamallen7836 i get peoples preferences due to drop, recoil etc. but I can guarantee you a 17 dumps its energy almost instantly, i would never shoot a rabbit in the body with a 22 as i eat everything i shoot and the rabbit could get back down his hole before he expires but i will happily take one in the chest with a 17, i would probably trust a 17 shot to the body more than a 22 the head. and to foxes 17 is completely capable and i would say better due to the longer ranges you can effectivley kill one with it the only two downsides to it is price and noise, other than that it blows 22 out the water
@@mawgantalling2438 I never had an issue with 22lr taking rabbits out. Used to make spare cash to cull jack rabbits from farms in the Central Valley, CA. Those jack rabbits were twice the size of the rabbits in this video. My preferred shot placement was just behind the front shoulder. It would take out the lungs & heart for a very fast kill. Damage to the meat was minimal in the worst case. I usually kept a few for food. I would sell, and donate the rest to one of the native American tribes on one of the reservations. It helped feed many of their families. They were the ones who taught me to crack the larger bones and boil out the bone marrow while making rabbit stew. This way you get plenty of healthy fats, and don't risk protein poisoning. You can also heat the cracked bones over a fire, and just eat the marrow. It tastes better then it sounds. It's down right tasty. When I would specifically go hunting wild rabbit I would use a 14 gauge shotgun. Fish & game limited rabbit hunting on state land to shotguns. That caused a little more loss of meat, but not much. The problem I have always had with .17 hmr on anything larger then squirrels & similar, was over penetration. With very little reliable bullet expansion. If they expanded more reliably it would be effective on a wider range of game. But then you end you a lot more meat damage. Range has never been an issue with .22lr for me. I don't hunt at ww1 battle ranges lol. Part of hunting is learning to blend in, and not being so animated that you can guide a plane in for landing.
Good video mate. I'm a BRNO Mod 2E man. Subscribed. Like your idea of not showing you going around and picking all those bunnies up after. A few blokes do that and thats just a waste of hunting shots. Cheers from Aussie.
Thanks mate and glad you enjoyed the video. I go round picking the bunnies up after I have finished shooting, like you say waste of time doing it while I'm shooting. Nothing gets wasted just a big clear up at the end. And my mate uses a BRNO he loves it. ATB and thankyou for the sub I appreciate it 👍

Great video and quality shots, I’ve got the exact same rifle and took my time zeroing it in at 60 yards. I use Winchester 42 grain subsonics and my best shot was 184 yard crow, but that was only once😂😂😂 But 160 yards is my constant, I’d recommend these rifles to everyone, my hmr is now redundant and I’m going for the 223 next. I subscribed and I’m Looking forward to going through your videos. Stay safe Ash from Scotland
Thanks Ash for your comment and subscribing I really appreciate it. As for the rifle yes I agree it's it great bit of kit. 140 yards is my longest so far but I'm working on it 😉😁 160 yards is a very good constant so well done with that mate. I use a Howa 1500 .223 short action and love it. I use 50g norma ballistic rounds and have no issues with them, except for the ones I miss but thats not my fault 😁😂😂. Hope you like my other vids I'm currently working on another video when time allows it using the .223 doing some long range shooting using a normal day scope. Hopefully won't be too long but work and other commitments are busy at the moment. Once again thanks for watching 👍
@@jimwood 22lr! some skill and freaky good luck! The drop I had to guestimate based on a gut feel of the distance (which was basically spot on when tested) which was like 5 feet if i remember (it was a long time ago) The wind was very strong so was allowing about 5 feet for that but reduced that before firing. I saw it drop when I got there it was facing left eye closed, so sign of the hit rolled it over there was a blow out in the head flipped it back opened the eye clear thru. Absolutely freaky lucky shot. I always enjoy the wait for the bullet to arrive after releasing at long ranges!
Thanks for the video. The close up shots were great. The rabbits were certainly in plague proportions. Subsonic ammo with a moderator certainly helps to keep the quarry calm. It looks like the CZ is a keeper. If it’s not a rude question how big are the farms you were shooting on?
Thankyou glad you enjoyed it. Yes the CZ is definitely a keeper can't wait to get out again with it. And yes it's the ideal gun and ammo for quiet pest control. The farms I shoot on range from 100 acres up to 500 acres. This particular one is approx 130 acres and the neighbouring one slightly less.
@@jimwood Thanks for that Jim. I live in the southern part of Western Australia and was curious about the farm sizes in the UK that people such as yourself are shooting on. @@bruiser6479 thankyou and yes I'm in a lovely part of the UK. @@jimwood Hi Jim. It’s funny, but you get very used to the distances. When we first get onto a new property I have to record my gps tracks on a mapping app so we don’t get lost. I got to shoot a CZ457 in 17HMR. That bolt action is incredibly smooth. Eye watering. p.s. I use a Ruger American in .22LR. Saved me a few hundred $$ and it's (almost) as good as the CZ, but for me it's good enough.
I bet that CZ in 17hmr was a great gun to shoot, ive not had the chance to try one. I bet your Ruger is just as good and if the ammo you use compliments to then it's a winner. Thankyou for watching and for your comment 👍
I hate when 09:47 happens Jim. Gives away my stealth. Other rabbits in the area just look at me with disgust)) I actually have the same silencer. Lovely vid and lovely weather for march. I used to be Jimmy Dempsey)) Revenue and all that))
Blimey how many bunnies was that? I guess with a sub 12ft/lbs air rifle, a lot of those would have bolted when you get too close for the shot? ATB MMMD
Honestly there are hundreds over there and using the rimfire was definitely the right choice instead of an air rifle. Wish I could show all the rabbits and damage they have done it's truly insane. Thanks for watching 👍
Heya Jim, mate greetings from down under. Question - I shoot cci for the .22lr but it moves at about 1250 fps. What speed are your subs? And why go with subsonic? Thanks champion, great footage.
Thanks mate glad you enjoyed I appreciate you watching 👍. The reason I use subsonic is because after alot of field testing over the years I have found these to be the most consistent and most accurate for what I do. It really is my personal preference of ammo I'm sure there are plenty of shooters who disagree and use other ammo but for me these are perfect and they have a speed of 1050fps and are 40 grain. Hope this makes sense mate. 👍
@@jimwood Hey champion, thanks for the prompt reply. Im originally from Sydney, but live two hours away in a place called Goulburn on a farm. Bunny central. The reason I ask, in Australia its illegal to have moderators or silencers. Im am trying out the 770fps cci "quiet" rounds. Problem being, they are only effective to 30 meters. I asked you about the subs as I thought perhaps they helped with sound suppression. Have you tried the "quiet round"? My gut says you haven't given you can use a silencer. ugh ........ half your luck.
Thankyou and I know what you mean, trying to getvnew ground is like gold dust. Years ago I just went knocking on farmers doors and got lucky. A couple said no so I just left them my number incase they changed their mind. If you don't try you will never know and now I'm very lucky to have all the ground I have permission to shoot over. At the end of the day the worst that can happen is them saying no but its worth a try.
@GeorgeMcKnight thanks but to fair you get quite abit of time when it comes to rabbit shooting they do hang around for a while even if you shoot one the others sometimes just sit there. And using a rimfire it's pretty quiet as well.

Just shot my first bunny today with my CZ457 i used CCi minimag round and i use a Vixen 4 - 16 x 44mm scope. Scope an rifle really good combo. The weird thing is we couldn't find the bullet hole from the hollow point round was expecting more obvious damage. Shot him through the shoulder area was a side on shot.
Well done on shooting your first bunny mate and it seems like you have found a good set up there. But yes that is weird that there is no entry point. When you took the shot was there a sound of a ricochet? I wonder if the bullet hit the rabbit killed it on impact but the bullet ricocheted off it? Or the entry point is that small you can't see it unless you skin it.
It is a shame that you cannot take the meat and the fur to Market like you used to be able to do in the 70s I went to Adelaide in 100 in the Flinders ranges for rabbits and foxes when we took the truck to the market we had 444 + 1/2 pair of rabbits but from what I understand you can't go to market and sell the meat and fur and I don't know if you eat them but that is a lot of animals to eat by one person instead of a whole Community like they used to do back in the day
I know what you mean and I do keep plenty of the meat for myself and I have other people that want it as well so they don't goto waste. Sadly there isn't a market for the fur but that's life now I'm afraid.
