I love hearing Rabea's ambient/delay/reverb stuff. Every time you hear him play like this you sink into this whole new world of amazing things and feelings and your imagination starts producing some beautiful stories and pictures in the eye of your mind. So sad yet beautiful and inviting melodies. I never get tired of hearing stuff like this.
The more I watch these blind shootouts, the more I realize that sounds are so based off what YOU like, I’m not even siding with reabeas choice but the fact that I can find a delay pedal out of this that fits my ears is dope, that’s the point right? Awesome vid 🤘🏽
On the Walrus ARP-87 Rabea said the repeats were "dark"; the Dampen knob was turned counterclockwise, turning it clockwise would have brightened the sound of the repeats. When he liked it early on the knob was at 12 o'clock and later (when he said it sounded dark) it was at 9 o'clock.
Well, that was great and it really opened my eyes for as what to look for in a delay pedal and I completely agree with Rabea's choice for the top 3-4 and winner!
I really do enjoy that these videos boil down to how it sounds and interacts with the guitar amd player, where we all usually get lost in the different modes an individual pedal might have. Way to bring it back to the most important thing, way to go guys
The timeline sounded amazing when I had it. It was a little complicated for me but think it definitely gets a strong convincing sound. I remember really liking the tape and dbucket modes a lot.
This is such an epic series. Suggested evolution of the concept: create a price point league. Start with the current winning pedals and run through them again up against 5 comparable pedals at same or similar price points. This would be super helpful for consumers. Then you could run an ‘All Price’ final to make it interesting at the end. An Andertons Pedal World cup if you will.
These chords that Rabea is playing (especially around 35 minute mark) remind me of soundtrack from the movie Road to perdition, especially the last scene in the rain. Great vid as always, glad that my two favorites went to the top 3.
You can turn the modulation off on the polymoon by turning the dimension all the way down. Bummer it didn’t get a proper go…it’s truly an amazing delay
That Boss modified w/mix control, and some orig sig fed in ta mk it a tad less old school would be grt! Grt delay sound, it just distorted more than most you used to my ears
would love to see this with octave pedals, something that seems like they should all do the same thing but theres probably some subtle details in there
Next vid should be Andertons guitarists shootout! - Winner stays on. My money's going on Rabea. Dave Simpson a very close second. Great watching talented people doing their thang!
Great! Danm you missed the best: jam pedals delay lama x. Won a shootout with a couple guitarrist agains carbon, strymon timeline, el cap, flashback vintage memoman.
From what I have read, the memory boy is quite dark vs the memory man. I have the TT 500, and it's not dark (perfect, actually). I also have the Cabron Copy, and that is dark too. Darker than my MM. I like them both for different flavors.
Should have had a real Deluxe Memory Man and a Canyon. Of course the Memory Boy is dark, that's its own flavor. But the Memory Man is what The Edge used on all the famous U2 albums and it's so bright it almost sounds digital. In some regards, the MXR Carbon Copy is a clone of the Memory Man. But it can't touch a vintage unit that works well.
You should of had the Strymon DIG dual digital delay in there, but removing the second delay might have been too complicated. I wonder how it would have ranked. What next, phasers perhaps.
Hey Captain, after Rabea makes a choice of which he likes, you may want to make a choice of the one you preferred simply by hearing it. Obviously, it's subjective, but what you are hearing is equally as important as to what he's playing imo. So you'll have to go back and rerecord the entire series! (That's my sneaky way of hearing more of Rabea's playing!!) 😜
You had the ARP 87's dampen knob turned down the whole time, and then Rabea was complaining that the analog mode sounded too dark. If only you had turned that knob up a bit... just saying.
35:45 Me yelling at the screen "Why are you tweaking the knobs right now? Wasn't it left on Rabea's preferred sound? Why change it now when he isn't playing and didn't ask for every setting to be changed?"
You guys could put together a full pedalboard with all Rabea’s choice from this and the previous videos on this series! I think it would sound nice! But with Rabea playing anything sounds nice 👏🏻
Yes! It was killing me every time Rabbea mentioned the ARP was too dark when the Captain was oblivious that he was interpreting the Dampen knob incorectly. It's a cut knob. It needs to be put up full at the start and then trimmed back to taste. The Captain can't be expected to know all the knob nuances - but the ARP would have dared even better if he'd known. Regardless, the ARP showed itself amazingly. (Yes, the ARP is my main delay!)
The flutter on El Cap is probably the Tape Crinkle. I didn't like it much either and dialled it completely out.- it's a secondary function so probably wouldn't have been obvious when running the test. As always, really enjoyed the video guys!
haha that tape crinkle is why I love the Strymon dtape algo and sounds the closest to my real tape echo when its on a long delay time/slow tape speed. Different strokes.
@@bakerfamily3187Wait A MINUTE!!! Did I just see two people civilly agree to disagree? About music gear?? On RU-vid???? Oh Lord, the end of days is upon us... :-)
I don't think the Polymoon got a proper shot. You should have turned the phaser off (or at least down from that ridiculous setting) and allowed Bea to just judge the sound of the delay itself
I agree..You can get anything from Bog standard mono Delay to Stereo Delay..It even has a high and low pass filter..they had the Flanger on.. which is brilliant anyway..But they should have turned it off for what they wanted...
For the money, the Dispatch Master is surprisingly good. It's not a high-end Strymon competitive delay pedal. But for a low-cost reverb/delay combo pedal, it's really toneful.
I wonder if the "winner stays on" shootout method is a bit inherently flawed, in that even if the first pedal is really good, eventually the listener will kind of tire of that sound and eventually pick a new pedal. Oh, well, it's all in good fun anyway.
I love the ambient delay thing, but there was one big problem with how the ARP87 was set up. I know it’s all personal preference but always have the x knob closeish to center and turn the dampen knob all the way to the right then bring it down until you like it. That’s how you get the best sound from that pedal.
That Carbon copy is not normal. The mix knob is definitively not behaving like it should, it's very dark and the internal knobs for the mod are definitively not in their original position. This is a very extreme modulation.
So glad to have Lee back directing these sorts of episodes. While Dave Simpson is a very talented, charismatic guitar player, his perfectly logical vision of: "All you need is to learn how to play the song and play it well" didn't really inspire GAS hobbyists such as myself. I want all the guitars. I want all the amps. I want all the pedals. So HELP ME.
Come on guys - you dissed the Meris Polymoon, because it had loads of modulation. Why not just dial it out ? - Yes it is possible. Using amp reverb is also a strange choice - why ? Apart from that I think you are right on the money. The Strymon El Cap sounds glorious, but you might want to get rid of the tape crinkle and the spring reverb. The Strymon Brig is also amazing. Cheers
Shame about El Cap. That flutter is the tape crinkle, which is a separate control that can be turned off. Still, I think Brig was the best sounding of the bunch and definitely deserved to win.
It is weird that he immediately didn't care for the carbon copy, but the Bucket Brigade won a round. The BB is literally the same pedal in a different box and sounds identical.
@@jordan-c-bay pretty much. They put one of the modulation knobs on the front (the carbon copy has both of them inside). There is also a "bright" version of the carbon copy. Maybe Rabea would have liked that better.
Exactly. I have Carbon Copy deluxe because I need the tap tempo. But this is the type of delay I want. Delay that doesn't distract me and sits in the background. But I guess modern players just like all these shoegaze delays.
I think if Rabea could play each pedal ahead of time, finding his preferred setting for each and THEN do a blind shootout. I think that would ensure each pedal is getting its fair shot and not being dismissed due to a bad setting.
