Not that people shouldn't have work but they can stop casting girls who look close to white as the daughter of dark skinned black parents so much. At least balance it out. Now the son is often dark skinned.

when the queen basically said racism ended because the king fell in love with a black woman, it pissed me off because they just made the issue of slavery seem so trivial. like all it took was a white man's love to end an entire system of discrimination and severe inequality?? are you serious? they deadass made it into some Cinderella/white knight story and completely ignored the efforts of poc to end slavery/discrimination 😭

as a black person im personally happy that we dont have to have the show be all about racism because i feel like a lot of shows/ movies just define their characters by them going through "black struggles"

@@Kmkmkms hm I definitely see your point! but if that was their goal then I feel like it would have been better to just not include the overcoming discrimination "storyline" at all and write this world as one that didn't have race struggles in the first place.

Yeah they should've just left out all the racism stuff tbh. We need more shows where diverse characters are just living our lives & we don't have to constantly be shown struggling, enduring prejudice, poverty, etc. It is fine to just make a fantasy show or alt history where characters' skin tones are irrelevant

@@mayaskie1784 yeah i agree when i started the show i thought "oh so in this world racism was never a thing?" and i was kinda happy with just that i loved how we could finally see black people in a fantasy period piece where they are royal and elegant, i love how they weren't styled to look white and they were allowed to wear braids and natural hair styles but then they mentioned racism and i was a bit confused and i would have preferred for racism to have never existed in this universe

The way Bridgerton just mixed up different regional cultures in India as 'Indian'. Them being from Bombay, speaking Marathi, but also using 'appa' (a South Indian word) with didi (Hindi) and Bon (bengali). And as a Bengali living in North India all my life i recognise that isn't accurate. They take random bits of aesthetically pleasing representation and just amalgamate it into 'indian girl'.

Yeah… I dunno. I see it differently? Like, when I watched Black Panther (I’m black) I noticed that they have shit from all over the continent mixed in. On the one hand, sure it’s not specific. But in the other, I genuinely wonder if idiosyncratic specificity actually can be more representative than one single specific type of person? For example, on the continent on Africa there are of course thousands of cultures and languages and traditions and so no one movie could ever represent them all with any depth. So if you can’t do that (if there just isn’t the time or space to do it), is pulling out specifics from different parts of the area you’re trying to represent potentially a better way to allow people to see themselves in a set of characters then getting one very specific region and culture exactly right? I’m not 100% convinced that that’s the case or anything, but I do think it’s something to think about. Like, it seems like the casting decision for this season was made in direct response to the colourism critique given that the Indian girl in question is one of the darker skinned Indian woman anywhere on tv and is definitely the darkest skin woman (or second maybe) of the whole series. So it feels like they were trying to represent as many people as they could with these 3 characters? But I don’t know - maybe specificity would be better. On the other hand, we have a fictional England where presumably slavery doesn’t exist on either side of pond, and colonialism hasn’t somehow abolished the mutual societal respect of hierarchy and ranking between high English and high Indian society so it feels weird on its face too, I guess to me, to hypothesize too much about a fantastical romantic world that simply could have never existed because all modern distinctions are based on history that isn’t shared with the history of the show. I dunno. Im probably overthinking this but you gave me a really interesting set of thoughts to tease out so thank you for that!

Actually, think it's great to learn terms of affection or greeting from different parts of India. Why limit it to one region? If the goal of the show is to expose people to different aspects of Indian culture, then including terms from different regions is wonderful. These are likely terms many would never have known had they not chosen to include them. It's not that it isn't accurate. They never specified a region of India. I see it as inclusive rather than an amalgamation.

In no way trying to redeem Simon's father, but I'm really interested in they brush over the fact he was a generation that would have experienced slavery and then aristocracy and was worried about being stripped of his title by a mad king if he didn't have a perfect heir. Not that it makes him sympathetic, but there's motivation there.

In 1813 the British slave trade was continuing in the Caribbean and didn't stop until the mid-to-late 1840s. That's why I couldn't suspend my disbelief to get into this show. Every family in Bridgerton would've been making income from chattel slavery, so this weird utopia where there are Black people in the middle and upper classes and Black servants aren't enslaved people, didn't sit right with me. I found it all so unsettling. I'm also at saturation point with Buffy Syndrome shows about idealised white women who are fawned over by all and sundry.

Yeah I think they really shot themselves in the foot by opening up that “alternate history” explanation of ‘yeah racism did exist but racism ended once Obama became pres- I mean, Charlotte became Queen’ explanation in a one sentence throw away line. If they just went colourblind casting no one would question it, but introducing that bit of worldbuilding and not following through just leaves them to so many questions

as an indian person i really wish there was more south asian representation considering englands long history of colonizing south asia and how there actually were south asians in england.

Agreed. In my opinion, the weird thing about Asian representation is that if there is a lot of South Asian representation, those who phenotypically look East Asian may not see that as “real” Asian representation for them. The same goes if most of the representation goes to those who physically look east or southeast Asian (which happens a lot). Then you have those who are middle eastern who may look white but people may not see that as collective Asian representation. Asians needs to be represented in general especially those who have monolids, have darker skin, ethnic noses, is Muslim/wears a hijab, etc.

Exactly!! And when South Asains are represented in British television they’re mostly required to represent Muslims too, not that it’s a problem but I’ve never seen a Hindu family being represented before and most of the time the actors/actresses aren’t Muslim in real life

@@bandaqueenlove9134 Which Asian groups gets represented depends on which asian group is the majority in a nation. E.g. On british TV you will see more south asian represenation than say east asian, west or central asian etc because south asians (mainly indians) are the biggest asian minority in the UK. Go to Germany and the biggest Asian representation on TV should be Turkish. Go to the US and the people they represent as Asian tend to be east asian which usually doesnt have anything to do with them being the majority but because the US views Asian as a race and therefore excludes south, west, central and northen Asians.

Not saying you're wrong, but there are period pieces for Asians though, right? I always thought Bridgerton tried including Black representation outside of the "real life" period pieces that focus on trauma. Whereas other POC don't share that experience of no representation outside of trauma.

​@@sabrinanaser9327 Maybe for East Asians? I haven't seen any but as far as I know, there isn't a lot. If the intention of the show was to create Black representation that doesn't focus on trauma, then it makes sense that there weren't any Asians. As a South Asian we have almost no positive representation in mainstream media and I'm not sure if there are period pieces involving South Asians at all. I'm Indian and I can't think of a single show where there are Indian characters who are likable and complex, rather than the usual unattractive nerd. However, I totally get why we might not see Asians in Bridgerton specifically.

I remember someone making a video about this show, and talking about how the representation of consent is really troubling because it leans into the "men can't be r*ped" idea. As in the main female lead coerces and the forces the man to have sex and impregnate her.

My first reaction was "is someone finally going to talk about this?" Then no. They victim blamed and called it love. They could have made serious commentary on the way society views sexual assault on men. Instead they basically threw out a "man up" message. Disgusting.

The reason why they didnt have any darskinned black people on the show as main characters is because eventhough they were trying to be "woke" they still wanted to play it safe. So they wanted "black" british royals to impress black people but they also didnt want to loose the "realism" aka offend white people who are big fans of british times or big fans of the book so they went with what would be more likely which is mixed race royals and mixed race main characters. When it comes to Asians not being as represented they didnt have to worry about that because usually asians dont complain as much about the lack of representation as other ethnic groups since its usually mostly non asians complaining for asians if that make sense or non asians encouraging asians to feel offended. That is partly the reason why a lot of shows get away with not representing asians enough or only representing a certain type of asian community.

I am from a Latin American country,you would not believe the quantity of people offended in the spanish trailer of Netflix ,saying it was not realistic to even include people who are not white as anything but servants.So yes,people who belong to countries that were once a colony and probably have all kinds of race heritage were still offended because they didn't want anything but a white cast in a fictional England,so even tho some countries felt it wasn't enough ,others felt that "woke" inclusion was too much.

All of Africa has a rich culture and history. But academic study is oversaturated in areas like Europe, Mesopotamia and Egypt. Also, you can’t exactly rely on the media for non-selective representation.

Yesssss we Ethiopians have a beautiful culture and a royal family that existed for 1000s of years. Am I the only one who doesn't care about being represented in a setting that people who look like me were never truly a part of? Honestly, including black people as nobility in 1800s England gives the false impression that black people were actually seen as equals in that society. What is really needed is a show that depicts African life in the 1800s or earlier and showcases our rich heritage.

when will young, darkskin women get more prominent roles in media and film? we need to see them at the forefront of these stories - not simply stories soley about the black experience and racism, but the more genre-based roles that white women are always getting.

This makes me thinks two things. 1. I hadn't considered this at all. This looked super diverse to me and it's kind of a reminder that, because I'm white, any presence of POC in media makes me feel like a show is diverse and I need to learn to ask for more. 2. Khadija is chaotic good, but she's always on the verge of swerving chaotic neutral and that's both exhillerating and terrifying. I will follow this woman's ramblings 'till the day I die.

@@sakuranovaryan9261 Hey, I feel the same way. I didn’t think it was completely diverse but I accepted it because it was one of the most diverse I’ve seen in media or that was so talked about it. I’m black and it really does show that we’ll accept anything or think anything is diverse if it has more than a couple POC.

Diversity is a fraud, why does a natively white country need diversity? Wheres diversity in mozambique, or nepal, or cambodia, or nigeria? If it was truly ‘representative’ of current uk pop , to play devils advocate, then out of 100 characters only 3-4 would be black, and 12 middle eastern. Which equates to no blacks in a cast that small, and maybe 1 asian. Use your brain to think and your emotions to feel, not the other way round

@@GoGalaxy u sure can say they were both in the wrong in different ways but like, simons issues with having children couldve been solved with communication. they showed he wanted kids but didnt feel like he could bc of his hang-ups. sexual assault is not a communication problem! its a fundamental disrespect of someones humanity and bodily autonomy problem! if they were having 0 problems in their relationship and marriage beforehand it still wouldve been wrong. there is no excuse EVER for marital rape. besides, the reason daphne did what she did was she knew that (for reasons she didnt understand, but she knew of it nonetheless) simon was avoiding getting her pregnant. she knew she was violating his boundaries without trying to work out why they existed to begin with.

I definitely missed any hint that Simon's dad was using the "twice as hard to get half as far" mentality, so to me it just came across as, "Wow, this dad is a jerk just because his son has a stammer. Poor Simon." Also, thank you for bringing up the consent issues! If it had been the opposite scenario where Simon wanted kids and Daphne didn't and he was forcing himself on her, I think it would have been seen more clearly for what it was. We still have work to do as a society with recognizing that men can be victims and women can be perpetrators, though I think it's getting better. 💜

Ooh Imagine that would've been cool. But it's ok ig. Most of the women in the show are corseted very slim women. And it felt like that was like pressure for them to be that way. That was kinda sad. Only Penelope and her friends are these outcasts. Tbh I really like how they dress Penelope. It's not to hide her body but to flatter it. She looks very beautiful.

With kids' shows like Little Bill, That's So Raven, and the Proud Family were some, but I'm not sure there are as many shows now that embrace different shades and put POC characters at the forefront. It might just be because I don't watch much TV anymore, though, but it's definitely something I noticed.

I would really love to see more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians in media. There are hardly any, even in media that is actually made in Australia, and when they do appear they are often the "noble savage" or "magical native" stereotype. I've been binge-watching Malcolm in the Middle as we're currently in lockdown in Sydney, and I thought it was so cool to see a major character who was Native Alaskan. There are so many races and ethnic groups that just never seem to appear in mainstream media.

For me it was a rape scene, no discussion. If a man coming inside a woman without her consent during sex constitutes rape, the opposite apply as well. It ruined the whole experience for me. Specialty because she still came out as a victim on the situation. Big red flag.

I totally agree. I hated that scene so much that I quit the show altogether. Evening out a lie by sexually coercing your husband to get you pregnant against his will (!) even though he obviously seems to have reasons we don’t yet understand ... I rarely defend men, but this scene is heavy.

Being a white, seventeen year old girl, I actually thought that bridgerton did well in including POC. This video really made me realise that lighter skinned/biracial people are used for prominent characters, instead of darker skinned actors. Now I'm just bothered by it. I'm a white lady, a bit older than you, and your comment is perfect in a way. It shows how we've backslid so far from where TV shows used to be, from when casts that featured black people in lead roles, and not just lighter black people, but all shades, was actually normal, to a point where people who could almost pass for white being set dressing is considered inclusive. As a sci-fi nerd, a couple examples that stick out to me are how NO ONE questioned the inclusion of non-white characters in prominent roles in shows like Battlestar Galactica, and think about the cast favorites of Star Trek. Non-white people, including Asian, got to exist and *do actual stuff.*. Now, toss in a few lighter black people at basically furniture, and that's inclusive.... We can do better than this, and i know we can because media HAS done better, and entertainment and media in general were so much better and wittier and insightful for it.

@@Author.Noelle.Alexandria I agree. I realize there were more TV shows centered around black main characters in the 90s and early 2000s, and that as in, fully black actors. Now biracial and light-skinned - not to mention straight up making white actors pose an entirely different race - is as far as it can get. We don't see it as a "push for diversity," when diverse character casts have fully fleshed out personalities, and vital roles to the plot.

I'm just shocked how not alot of people are talking about the toxic relationship between Simon and Daphne. Daphne literally tries to change Simon and ultimately sexually assaults him to get what she wants...a child. Yes, rape can happen in a marriage as well. I wonder how people would react if the roles were reversed.

I get what you are saying, but the roles are almost ALWAYS reversed. Women being raped is used as a plot point in alot of stories. GoT for example. Women's suffering is almost always used as a motivating plot point.

The Good Place does some wonderful color-conscious casting. They casted whoever was best for the role and then made the role around the character, with their own racially and culturally significant and I truly love that and think it should be done more often.

Now that you mention it, they did do a fantastic job with the main cast on that show. I didn’t even realize that when I was watching it because it felt natural like they were characters who were just living their lives (or after-lives rather, lol). It didn’t feel too forced or too relaxed.

Conscious Casting is something my favorite Drama Professor taught us when she picked scenes for us to learn. It took her from the time she met us, to about halfway or more through the quarter to cast us into our scenes, because she wanted to get to know us and our struggles and passions before deciding roles for us. She put emphasis on the importance of seeing the actor and letting the actor connect to their character's struggle. It wasn't just skin color she took into consideration, she also looked at sexuality and anxieties(from what students shared willingly- just to be clear), and it lead to some very heartfelt and passionate finals. It was generally a really good experience, and I'd say, a lot of that was thanks to our Professor just- acknowledging parts of us while casting and wanting something for us to grow from.

@@laurad-l-m814 as said in this video, the dark skin characters represented were stereotypes with no real depth and only embodied archetypes given to us by white media. Some would say “at least they got speaking lines” but I’d beg to differ; them having lines but only playing stereotypes is just as bad as minimal representation because at least there’s no negative connotations of that skin colour being perpetuated.

I'm an Indian woman and this practice of colorism runs sooooooo deep in Bollywood that a bunch of highest paid actresses right now in Bollywood are NOT EVEN Indian. they are mixed or have distant south Asian ancestry, and all of them are light skinned to the point where some of them look whiter than my whitest friends. For example Jacqueline Fernandez, Sunny Leone, Katrina Kaif. There are literally no famous dark-skinned actresses in Bollywood, maaybe you can count Deepika but she's heavily made up in films to look basically white.

Even in the show, she starred in she was a “half American/half Indian” character to appease North American and European viewers because they are more accepting of biracial and light-skinned people from any race 🤷🏽‍♀️

I'm super late to the Bridgerton party having watched S1 oh recently, but I gotta say I was extremely and deeply upset by the romance between Daphne and Simon. It was so promising at first since I'm a sucker for fake dating and they had amazing chemistry, but That scene happened and it was on _Simon_ to be forgiven and not Daphne. She even gets what she wants in the end, and he has his desires minimized by her and Anthony. Watching him be beaten up hurt more than anything else. But Daphne is tier for least favorite character with Penelope for how she so willingly ruined Marina's life because Marina was pursuing a boy she liked and saw _no_ repercussions for it. I guess if you're a white woman in this show you're instantly forgiven for violating and hurting black main characters. Its upsetting and I'm only interested in S2 because of some friends - if it weren't already out, I doubt I'd pay this show anymore mind. (Favorite heart 💙)

Wait, so you're mad at Daphne for borderline raping Simon and not facing any consequences for it, but you simply see Marina trying to baby trap Colin as simply, "pursuing a boy [Penelope] liked?" Nope. What both Daphne and Marina did were shitty and they deserve to be called out for it. At least with Daphne, her ignorance a naivety towards sex probably did not enable to understand the etiquette of sexual consent. But Marina knew full well what she was doing. Just because she's black doesn't mean you have to defend her all the time.

Honestly I felt bad for marina. What a toxic environment and life. She's likable in other places. But what she did was wrong. She was manipulating and betraying a person. And Penelope is honestly a great character on paper. Her story is interesting. But she's prolly down more toxic thing so can count in one hand. So yeah there's no way to like a character I guess. They've all done something horrible. And not in like human flaws way. More like evil. Which is for the drama.

She was locked up in a room against her will for who knows how long because she was found out by FAMILY. The thing is, I think romance is an amazing genre to explore issues of race, sexuality, gender, social issues etc. in because it’s about two people with probably differing life experiences and different worldviews and differing opinions coming together and learning about each other and deciding they want to build a life together. A huge part of romance is two people getting to know each other, which leaves a huge space for those people to be discussing social issues and how they see the world as they are trying to decide if this other person is compatible to building a life with them. And so to hop around deep social issues in favor of just discussing favorite color or favorite bands or favorite movies between two romantic leads, I think it’s really shallow and ignores a lot of conversations that people in actual relationships often have.

As an Asian, it's so annoying how Asians are either the smart, toxic, or "quirky" friend. This is why I gravitate to Kdramas and movies (I'm Korean). It's refreshing to see beautiful Asians being appreciated for their acting in significant roles, but even then I always see a few scathing comments. Also please. Can we see some South Asian representation?

​@@esikazemese Hi! I totally understand where you're coming from, and I'll be glad to answer. You see, many Asian countries are monoethnic. Even Korea, despite having a surge in foreigners, is still made up of almost only Koreans. Of course, if this changes, then Korean media will have to show more diversity. But of now, Asian marketing is targeted towards Asian features because that is literally the vast majority of the people living there. This is why cultural appropriation and other issues can be different in Asian countries. However, in the case of western countries, we know that there is a large diverse population of all races. Western media should reflect this. I'm Korean-American, and even though I see myself in Kdramas, I want to see myself in Hollywood movies, because that is a reflection of myself as well. I think that Asians, and honestly all races should be getting equal representation in western media, because there are millions of these people living in western society. My parents don't care that they aren't represented in blockbuster movies, but I do, because I was born and raised in America. Just because I have the opportunity to see myself in the Asian market doesn't mean that Asians shouldn't be getting representation in western media. At most, it becomes an excuse to brush off racism in the industry, as, "oh you have your own media, why don't you just go there?" Hope this answers your question :)

What happened after the 90s?: My observation was that when FOX was coming up and struggling to establish itself it used black and brown communities to do that (In Living Color, Martin, Roc, Living Single, NY Undercover etc.), then when it started to experience a measure of success they started to move on and became more "mainstream". I think the UPN also repeated this pattern to a point, they might still be trying to establish themselves and the landscape was different.

I agree. I miss 90s shows like Cosby, Fresh Prince, Living Single, Mr. Cooper, etc. that had great black casts. & tbh I liked Friends & many shows with white casts. It's fine if it fits the show or is some white folks history like Vikings or British royalty. But nowadays they pander to us & try to put every ethnicity in every show so we don't get to shine in big roles or our own shows. Plus, every time non-whites are on screen it's for "struggle love" or poverty or discrimination. Obv these are real issues, but it's like we're being treated as a "social issue" rather than as human beings. It's like new shows only put folks like me on screen to show struggling, but in the 90s shows we had wealthy black families being happy. It's like we're going backwards now😕

I really think the "yall can never be happy" crowd is also kinda looking at it from the wrong perspective. Like, it's not necessarily about trashing a show. It's about critique and there's no such thing as a perfect show and good showrunners should be open for that critique and be able to take it in. Like with Bridgerton. They tried, some things were alright, some things were good, some things were a bit uninventive and some things were outright problematic. They now have the opportunity to interact with their audience and work with what came back. That's a good thing. That allows for progress.

I (kinda) liked the world they build in Bridgerton because like you said, it felt like colorblind casting. And i liked how they didn't really talk about the characters' race at all because its kinda fun to watch something that has nothing to do with race at all sometimes, but then they DID start talking about it in the show and it made absolutely NO SENSE and it threw me off lol. That bullshit story about ‘the white king who fell in love with one of us and ended racism’ or whatever was fucking awful, they should have just not adressed it at all and that wouldve been better

yup. there's a film adaptation of Charles Dickens' David Copperfield starring Dev Patel, and there they did colourblind casting with absolutely zero explanation whatsoever. at one point there's a character played by a Black woman whose father is played by an Asian man, and it's just treated as it is. there doesn't always have to be explanations for these things, particularly if the story is about something else entirely. just don't whitewash characters that are already established as bipoc (bc representation of bipoc played by bipoc still has ways to go) and you're good to go!

Take for instance all the Black marvel male superheroes, they are all played by unambiguous dark skin BLACK men in their live actions but for storm(who is a darkskin black woman), only BIRACIAL or ambiguous women have played her.

Very true. I'm a big X-men fan and we definitely got a whitewashed storm. Fun fact is that Angela Bassett was originally intended for the role. I forget why she didn't do it but yeah it's very true. Going forward I am hopeful Hollywood will change it. The new Storm should definitely be a dark skinned woman. Anna Diop would be a good choice

I dont exactly agree with this at least not presently. Black panther did a lot for not only highlighting dark skin black women as love interests but also fleshed out, complex and strong characters with Shuri, Nakia and Okoye becoming fan favorites because of the film, we have definitely made progress. Now that is just one movie so we will have to see how this all pans out moving forward.

I recently saw an even more whitewashed version of Storm in a comic (she literally looked like a white woman, she was unrecognizable) I believe there was a video done about it but in older comics she was dark skinned. Her hair and features were still Eurocentric though.

This video is so good. I'm a white girl and I learned a lot from it. It's a shame that many of these things were not obvious to me before so thank you so much for that change in perspective. It's easy to forget how privileged I am that I see so many people in movies or shows who look like myself. It really matters what we see and how it's presented. I write fantasy stories and I always try to be open minded and have diverse characters. That sentence "you have to work twice to get half" really hit me because I never thought about it, I never needed to and it makes me hate our unfair society so much. It's similar to women and men. When you belong to the privileged group you don't need to think about the not-privileged group. I hope we can change that

The majority of them were darker than most people I know who identify as Black in the united states (including myself). I'm like, where is the representation for these folks? Let's not forget that they completely ignored certain ethnic groups. I know the film is based on a book but the movie seemed to portray singapore as plainly "asians=chinese". When in reality, Singapore is a MELTING pot with all kinds of asians. If anything, (as a south asian) it felt like the movie perpetuated the stereotype that asians only mean east asians.

ItzKeisha and Kennie JD are both really awesome too. Kennie’s one of my favorite RU-vidrs. She does a lot of commentary videos but also talks about current events as they arise. Keisha (though I haven’t seen some of her most recent videos) talks a lot about news on social media and issues like racism, homophobia&biphobia respectively, and how problematic certain creators are. I really love that comment you made about not being necessarily responsible for your first thought but being damn well responsible for your second. The amount of fucking times some initial thought pops into my head about something or someone and I'm just immediately "what the fuck is wrong with you?" I often beat myself up about it pretty badly, but I'm trying to remember that the corrections I make afterwards are just as important. Reprogramming your mind from a lifetime of weird ass societal influence is hard as hell. I remember watching a documentary about teens with tourettes syndrome, and I remember one teen explaining how it's a nightmare for them because they blurt out the first thing that comes to their mind, even if they don't agree with it or know it's stupid/wrong/untrue, and I still think about that all the time. They went to an airport and kept blurting out the word "bomb!" really loudly. Just that whole thing reminds me so much of that concept of your first thought not entirely being your own.

I'm Colombian. My representations only ever includes drugs, terrorism, maaayyybeee a maid at times. I usually just let myself feel represented through black girls, Mexican girls, and even asian girls at times. :/ I never get any real representation. I let my myself feel proud when I see a black girl doing her thing. If I don't do this then idk ya know it feels shitty haha... BUTTT, i do understand how important it all is and I'm glad it is being talked about so much.

Right!!! It bothers me as a Colombian that whenever I hear “diversity,” I assume I’m not included. Which on the one hand, I get, it’s one country. But the fact that “diversity” barely includes any latinx people at best but seems never to go south of Mexico (unless you are akin Manuel Miranda or JLo) has become more and more problematic

You and me both... Ava Duvernay and Bird Runningwater are currently working on a tv drama. Theres a new one airing right now on CW called trickster. The wilds on Amazon Prime has a second season They cancelled chambers on netflix which I'm still pissed about. I was so exited for ATLA on netflix but I don't know.

Charmedsas1 most of the indigenous movies I know were made for natives by natives, like smoke signals and dance me outside- which are totally not coincidentally both my favourite movies ,:D

@@sea4896 Thanks for these references, I will def check them out. 😂 One of my fav indigenous movie is blood quantum. Also I see what you mean by for us by us. Sovereign is going to have a for native by native as well, but keep in mind that you need producers, the right producers like Ava, cuz she understands that you need to support at a distance. Same with "the body remembers when the world broke open" a lot of indie movies filters thru her production company but she doesn't hover over them, I like that she lets them shine thru her platform.

And if they are, they only include Indians and not other south Asians. Like hello... other ones exist. I’ve seen Indians in TV but they’re always a caricature of an Indian person (like exaggerated accent, nerdy, etc.), which isn’t fair.

@Kiss the color of a constellation they don't even completely feature Indians - it's the colonial hangover, they've started whitewashing their gods and goddesses. But yeah, it's not the complete south Asia, it is however the most influential film industry in the region, if they changed themselves and the self loathing ended then it'd probably do a lot for representation elsewhere

Another thing that these shows refuse to do is cast an unambiguous black couple. The man can be dark skinned, but best believe the woman will be lighter than a brown paper bag; or definitely biracial. Leave it to the media you would think dark skin women, and black couples don't exist. I still watch Living Single...the cast was fire! Your self promotion at the end😂🤣. You got pipes!🤎

honestly the scene between daphne and simon when she forces him to try to have a child with her bothered me so much. it’s literal sexual assault and rape and they tried to make daphne the victim afterwards and never talked about how simon was feeling

Your video was eye opening especially the stuff about featurism and colourism it literally shook me because altho i am preety aware i didnt realize until this video i have always took proud in loving and accepting ppl the way they are no matter what they look like but lately i have been struggling with it and tat has been eating me because i know thats not right and i wanna do what i preach but u saying the first judgemental thought comes in ur mind is not u and society really comforted thanku so much, this video has helped me tremendously .
