Thought it interesting that Big Joe went with her for support. He trusts you more than anyone and was there to keep her calm. The dynamics of his job for his ladies is quite unique. He kept her calm and loaded easily. Prayers you are able to save her. Put some Vickc's Vapor on your nose under your mask. Put some on the cow too so she doesn't smell what is coming out of her. We used that on stallions showing so they can't smell mares in the same class. It works. Keep a jar in your medicine kit for this reason. That, vet wrap, genetian violet, doses of antibiotics, Epsom salts, bag of saline, gloves, etc. Bags of alfalfa cubes to distract the cow. Prayers for all of you.

I will never forget when one of my father-in-law’s cows had a dead calf hanging out of her. I stood at the cow’s head talking and petting her as he pulled her calf. She had tears leaking from her eyes. The calf was removed and I told my father-in-law that she and I were kindred spirits and he needed to do everything he could to save her. I have never been able to carry to term and deliver a healthy baby. I have 5 in heaven so I felt for this momma. She died about a week later. The infection from it all was too much and she had already lost so much weight. I still hold a special place in my heart for that girl. Ranching is hard. Thank you for moving quick to do all you can. I’m crossing my fingers she pulls through.

@thaismatsumoto
@thaismatsumoto 11 месяцев назад
I think the problem with that is bison are wild animals. Whereas a cow is domesticated. Even though they have a good relationship with Dusty ,he is even careful around them. So it would be difficult to keep a recovering bison in a barn stall while it is recovering .And I don’t know if they would be able to be bred again.Most cows can because they usually use artificial insemination. Bison do it the natural way.🙂

Dusty, I am one of those “silent” viewers. I watch all of your videos, enjoy them thoroughly, but don’t generally comment. This summer’s calving season seems to have been difficult. From losing a calf, to this issue. Through it all, you have just been steadfast. Praying for you, your beautiful family, and these magnificent animals.

Dusty and Marissa you love and care for all your animals. They are lucky to have come to the Ponderosa and Cross Timber Bison Ranch. Brooks is following y'all's footsteps.

As a breeder myself it is always a strain when you have a young female bred and having trouble birthing. One thing I can suggest is flushing her out. You can simply do this by getting a 5 gallon bucket of soap water (non-scented) and using a pump siphon by hand and inserting a tube into her and just flush until the water coming out is clear. I raised horses and we did this to a mare the vet said he could not make it to us, I bought the siphon at a coop and the tube..... another thing I would wait on breeding this female again until next year, let her insides heal. Most usually young females can do this, from being bred to early. Let her have a season off to help her insides heal or you could have this happen again... Best of luck to you.

Unfortunately this advice will not get to them in time. It's exactly what needs to be done but this video was posted much later after the problem occurred and Dusty tried to do any thing. I hope he sees this and keeps the information for the future.

I love how gentle your bison are. I know hire dangerous they can be. Fifty years ago my wealthy uncle was raising beefalo as a hobby and I worked a couple of years on his farm. What a great adventure for a teenager. My uncle never taught us how to work to gentle the herd and it was quite the wild ride. So much respect for the brilliance of your handling of your herd! I love, love love your show! Thanks for all you do, Jim Singleton Pueblo Colorado

As you're a vet I want to ask if there are drugs they could use to make her have contractions to help expell the calf/remains?
@patigirl2470
@patigirl2470 11 месяцев назад
If given early - there are drugs to help but dangerous if calf is positioned unnaturally in the birth canal. Once the cervix closes - then there is no chance. Hope the best for Texas cow ♥️♥️♥️

Growing up on a farm, this seemed like it was inevitable. I admire the teamwork of your whole entire family. I tend to be with Marissa in worrying about your getting hurt. Isn't this the second Texas cow that had a stillbirth? You seem to have the best equipment you can get for the bison and so it's safe to assume you have the best vet, too. I'm thinking he may be wanting to run some blood tests. It's too disheartening to go through it again. My prayers to you and your family. God speed.

I’ve always said there’s a special bond of trust between you and each of your bisons. She came to you and stayed with you through the whole process ; when she was in the catch pen she’d never seen, she looks at you, to see what you want her to do; even when Marissa tried to poke her up into the squeeze, she waited for you to touch her and know that that was what was expected. Everybody who watches this video will know what it’s like to be a mama and have to go to some strange man/men to have your baby. And every mom has to trust that man; like Texas trust’s you. May God help and bless you. [words I don’t throw around lightly]. I have a lot of Celtic bloodlines [and some off the Old Beliefs] ; so I do look at you and see "the 🦬 whisperer".
