I honestly thought it was going to be shit but I’ve watched it like 5 times in the space of 2 weeks. Funniest film I’ve seen in a long time! Sorry for doubting you guys! 😩😂
Being a Norwegian woman, who has grown up with the Eurovision Song Contest, and also done a school paper on it, I can tell you that the contest began as an attempt to create something cheerful after World War 2 had ended. Some of the great broadcasting companies in Europe from UK, France, Switzerland + a couple of others, decided to make a contest where composers and songwriters could submit their material and the winner was supposed to represent a new, positive music trend to lighten peoples' spirit. As time has passed on, it has become more and more of a show for crazy songs, lyrics, costumes, and more over-the-top performers and stage shows. In European countries, many of the winning songs over the years, are songs that "everybody" knows, and can act as a great barrier breaker when meeting strangers in another country. I hope you found this little "lesson" interesting, Kim :-)
Yeah it was like where's this guy been all my life? He's got it all! Since many people are staying inside watching movies now, I think his career might get a serious boost from this one. I mean - he should be A list.
I was suprised to find so many layers to the characters. Dan’s character for instance being a gay artist in Russia, enjoying all the luxuries but the one thing he wants (love). Small subtle nods like this throughout the movie.
@@lovisanaslund8998 A Russian here speaking: in Russia EVERYONE knows that Lazarev is gay. And it's ok with everybody you can talk to, but somehow being gay is still ''immoral" in public's official views... "Doublethink" level here is insane. It's not even hypocrisy anymore. It's crazy.
Lovisa Näslund although tone of voice wise and all the gold things more remind me of Baskov (who is also rumored to be gay) He’s also Called “the Gold voice of Russia”, Lasarev mostly wears blacks and silvers, more cold toned colors and voice quite softer)
No idea why some are panning this film ! I'm no great fan of The Eurovision Song Contest and haven't watched it since Punk arrived on the scene but this film was a great laugh and had some seriously good songs in it. Rachel McAdams is as cute as a button and Molly Sanden's singing has made me look up her work.
We live in post apocalyptic world where feel good funny entertainment like this gets crushed and superficial superhero cheesy films get billion dollar hype.....
I think it’s because most people who are American/Canadian have NEVER seen or even heard of Eurovision, so they don’t understand why people like it and they don’t see the humor in the movie. The movie is SO ridiculous but it’s funny because they didn’t even change or exaggerated Eurovision, it really is that ridiculous. And the cultural aspect is on point in the whole movie.
Dan Stevens got the accent perfectly. My husband is Russian and we live in Ukraine. If I closed my eyes, I could swear I was listening to any number of our friends talking to us. It was spot-on
Definitely not Borat. His accent was really authentic, and he even kept it while shouting, which is usually where I hear actors lose their "put on" accents.
This movie is what we needed during this terrible times! This movie makes me feel normal, back again! 😊 Love it and love all the songs! Amazing, well done! JaJa Ding Dong can’t get it out of my head! Lion of love amazing voice! Sigrit songs gives me goosebumps every time I hear them!
Such a lovely movie. I have seen it 3 times in one week. I will continue to watch it again and again just like I watched Police Academy and Beverly Hills Cop growing up
Love the film.....this will resonate with European audience more than American. To the casual observer if will be s silly camp romcom.....but if you grew up with Eurovision and the cultural phenomenon it is you get do much more out of it and also get the parody aspects also. Rachel suited this role so well and her bjork inspired accent was so good.....will as always is in fine form! 9/10....I only dock a point because they didn't sing "ja ha ding dong" again.....when seethe film you will get the reference LOL. I hope #netflix bring Rachel and Will back for a sequel!
Im from the Philippines and this movie got me hooked with Eurovision! I watched 2019 Eurovision and realized that European music is extra ordinary! I even dig those non-english songs and its already on my spotify playslist! I also love 2016 and 2018 Eurovision! I especially love the songs 1944 from Ukraine, Soldi from Italy, Sebi from Slovenia among those foreign languages.. Performance wise I love last year's Australian entry, it was breathtaking! Im not particularly impressed with the voting system though because there could be politics involved in the jury votes.. But the public votes kinda balanced it all out but still..
@@seandomhnallosullivan2544 She said in the interview she sang some of the music, such as Ja Ja Ding Dong, but not the majority of it, especially the last contest song with that soaring high C, and credited Molly Sanden.
Love this movie! So much fun you can see w the whole family. Pg 13 Great catchy songs written by pro songwriter. Love her and Will, but Dan Stevens …..great character as a Russian and handsome
I love Rachael in this movie.. I already know all the songs. 😂😂😂 I can only imagine the people on the sidewalks, as I’m singing volcano man at the top of my lungs in my car!
I'm sorry I've seen the movie, I enjoyed it but all I can think about and all I have stuck in my tongue is : *VOLCANO MAN* Also, as an European and a big fan of the contest I really missed this year's edition, felt a bit weird since to me and many of us Europeans that follow the show, is almost like a tradition! So yeah, this film was so good in this crazy times. The laughs are much needed right now 😌
Never heard of Eurovision...? >falls off chair< (English Eurovisonophile, here) big world out there America! ;) glad you liked the film - I agree, a delight - a joyful film with a heart, just what we need at the moment
I'm a guy that really doesent like musicals or feel good cheesy romcoms but literally three days after watching this film im still smiling, thinking about it and got the fucking songs stuck in my head. Actually the best film i've seen in a while easily, came at the right time as well I think.
I loved the movie... it was a perfect feel good movie for this time. I will definitely watch it again and again. Loved the music and the final song... unforgettable.
The play Ja Ja Ding Dong guy presented the results of the Icelandic jury this year both the guy who actually represented Iceland this year did a version of Ja Ja Ding Dong and the guy who represented Norway sang a version of it to court the lady from Azerbaijan. Also the guys representing Finland had a sign with 'Play Ja Ja Ding Dong' on it.
I live in the US but have been aware of Eurovision for a while. I think it helps to have some awareness of Eurovision or at least the international pop music industry to really appreciate some of the humor in this movie. Frankly, Will Ferrell was not at his best as a comedic actor in Eurovision but the movie was fun (if not roll on the floor funny) in spite of that. I think Dan Stevens stole the show. Alexander Lemtov was definitely my favorite character!
It definitely helps;)(I watched the real Eurovision about two times in my life (I’m German) and I still would not have gotten the comment “everybody hates UK”-comment.As to will Ferrell: I really liked him in “ stranger than fiction”( great movie imo), but I might check out his other stuff after this one. I keep my fingers crossed for a Lemtov-centered pre-/sequel (whatever, as long as he’s in it:).
I really enjoyed watching this movie. (watched it 3 times already). Awesome landscapes, actors, songs, and the Dan Stevens's phrase "Mother Russia does not agree" just kill me. 🤣
the film was spot on! the submitting of weird or bad songs to make sure that country doesn't win and doesn't have to host the next year, the political votes and aliances between countries regardless of how good the songs are, the fact that you don't actually have to win the eurovision to become an international success
In Europe, we have all know of the Eurovision, it is rather a kitch song contest show but it is massive. Great movie, made me want to travel to Island although I have wanted to go for years ;)
Well done Netflix, the Movie was xlnt. Eurovision is nowadays just a political orientated event, but has given us ABBA, Riverdance & some great crazy memories....
These interviews make me wish the main actors were European so the question could be more related to what Eurovision is and what it really means for us Europeans. I liked the film, though, as a kind of parody of actual Eurovision.
Dan Stevens was amazing in this film, despite my dislike for his character in D. Abbey. Had no idea he had these acting chops. Best line in whole movie: "There are no gays in Russia... 100%" Delivered brilliantly!!!
Have you seen “I’m your man” yet? If you can deal with watching subtitles movies, I think it’s worth a watch., that’s his best acting/character by far along with this (he plays a partnership/companion Android)., the story is rather “meh” I think but worth it for him. He used to be my fave character in DA too, but I found him a bit too arrogant/righteous on second watch ( also I seem to have been one of the few people not buying the romance with lady Mary in general and the love at first sight-thing). Other than that, the majority of his movies mostly have a good premise, but are hampered by a script either going off the rails in the second half (“The Guest”), are bland/forgettable from start to finish (“The Ticket”) or horrendously bad (“ kill switch”), and that includes the over-rated “BatB”(great singing, though, made me wish he had been allowed to for this movie, too).
She was great in the movie! But it really bugs me how she keeps saying Björk in English even after spending time in Iceland. There’s an Ö there god damn it. 😅
The fact that American culture has been unaware for more than half a century about an event that draws now an audience of 200mil people speaks volumes about US cultural isolation, or more specifically, the fact that it is very much a one-way street.
