Piano Sonata No. 2, Op. 36 in B♭ minor
00:00 - I. Allegro agitato (B♭ minor)
08:53 - II. Non allegro-Lento (E minor-E major)
16:14 - III. Allegro molto (B♭ major)
Three years after his third piano concerto was finished, Rachmaninoff moved with his family to a house in Rome that Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky had used. It was during this time in Rome that Rachmaninoff started working on his second piano sonata. However, because both of his daughters contracted typhoid fever, he was unable to finish the composition in Rome. Instead, Rachmaninoff moved his family on to Berlin in order to consult with doctors. When the girls were well enough, Rachmaninoff traveled with his family back to his Ivanovka country estate, where he finished the second piano sonata. Its premiere took place in Kursk on 18 October 1913 (5 October in the Julian calendar).
Composition
The sonata is in three interrelated movements:
Allegro agitato (B-flat minor)
Non allegro-Lento (E minor-E major)
Allegro molto (B-flat major)
It is unified by two Non allegro bridges between the movements. The outer movements follow
Original edition
First Movement (Allegro agitato)
The first movement of the second piano sonata is in sonata allegro form. The exposition begins with the first theme, which has a descending arpeggio that ends with a low B-flat octave followed by a B-flat minor chord. The first theme area lasts until a cadenza-like passage creates a bridge into the second theme area. The second theme is in D-flat major, with a chorale-like texture that contrasts with the brilliance of the first theme.
In the development section, which is split into three parts, there is much tonal instability with constantly changing key centers. Parts of this section use the left hand to imitate bells, with chromatic descending, alternating sevenths and thirds.
The recapitulation restates the first two themes in B-flat minor. The final section of an extension to the recapitulation alternates between B-flat major and B-flat minor, leaving the tonic unclear until the coda. The coda, clearly in B-flat minor, repeats two themes seen earlier in the movement.
Second Movement (Non allegro)
The second movement of the Piano Sonata is in two-part ternary form. A seven-measure interlude in G major links the first and second movements, after which there is a relative minor key area (E minor). The second movement's main theme is based on a motive of a sequentially repeated falling third.
WIKI.
The second movement references material from the first movement, which is the first instance of cyclic unity in the sonata. For example, in the middle-section of this movement, the bell texture from the first movement is reestablished.
Third Movement (Allegro molto)
The third movement begins with a repetition of the interlude to the second movement, with the meter shifted from 4/4 to 3/4. This movement, again in sonata-allegro form, further utilizes cyclic unity by using themes from the first movement. The transition to the second theme area of the exposition introduces a new theme (in D major), unusual in sonata-allegro form.
The development section, as in the first movement, is also split into three sub-sections. Similar to the exposition, it uses themes from the first movement in addition to the new themes introduced in the exposition.
The recapitulation is in B-flat major, and states the first theme from the third movement only once. It utilizes another past theme expansively to lead toward the coda. The coda utilizes themes from the first movement and is highly chromatic and brilliant.

I am not sure what's crazier.. that somebody composed this or that she can not only memorize this but also play it to perfection.
@rodrigo.magalhaes
@rodrigo.magalhaes Год назад
Playing is not a matter of memorizing the score, but of reflecting on life. I explain. Those who play and also those who listen, do so according to the life story of each one. Every time you play, you play under the influence of what you live and lived in real life. That is, the only memory that the interpreter uses is the memory of his own life story to interpret the music. The memorized scores practically cease to exist, it's as if the pianist doesn't even know how he is able to play such music, because the music itself has become a living substance in the pianist's soul and time. Likewise, for those who listen too. Only we will understand this. To those who listen to Lady Gaga, never. BUT, of course, I agree with you. I just wanted to philosophize. hahaha

Actually I'm pretty sure the third movement begins at 15:39 with L'istesso tempo. That's because it also states attacca subito, which means that there is no pause between the previous movement and the next movement. But I understand the difference in views, because L'istesso tempo is still slow, which you don't expect to be the case for a 3rd movement. As for the performance: bravo Valentina! Exciting and very original and inspiring interpretation, congratulations!

This musical offering is fresh and alive! It's a treat to hear Rachmaninoff's original version of this sonata. It seems there are more complex, contrapuntal interactions in parts. The final movement, especially the ending, is electrifying, as if anticipating the most enthusiastic applause imaginable.

This particular expression is coming from the expressor of the human: the soul's heart, but sounds like there's some peace missing from the expression. I've played in like expression before (not the skill, just the numbing pain) and wished I had recorded it if only to remember that time. So, in light of this my somewhat presumptive observation, I would hear this again, but loudly, at midnight, on a Monday, on my stereo and not on my phone 😊. Thank you Valentina for this (forgive me) raw and bloody steak that is, if I may be quietly bold, waiting for some heat. I could "hear" the rendition I was thirsting for within it...but it was, to me, dimly obscured in the deeps, within a heart that would be most welcome in many ways.
